Funny, I always thought homeless people were
somebody else.
Before all this happened I wasn't brave like I am now.
I didn't know I could take care of my mother.
That was before.

You've got to know the rules of the places you're at.
There are places you can sit and places you can't.
Places you can stand and places where they tell you
to move on.
I taught myself to sleep in real noisy places.
I taught myself to sit and rest with my eyes open.
If you've got a place to live and money in the
bank, you can sit anywhere.
If you're homeless, it's called loitering.

I am here to offer you a choice.
It is time for you to leave behind all your things
from the modern world and follow us to glory.
It is time to choose the glorious path.
What these people don't know is that the choice
they're being offered is join the glorious path or be killed.
The Darkest Path starts several years into the
second American Civil War.
Now what's a Civil War?
A civil war is when a country is fighting against
itself so instead of fighting somebody outside its
borders, a country has been ripped in two and the
two sides are fighting each other.
So why is this war taking place?
The world in The Darkest Path is very similar to
our own where people are extremely divided over
political issues, social issues.
Only in the world of The Darkest Path these issues
have intensified to the point where an extremely
militant organization has gathered an army and
decided that it's gonna take over America.
And it actually starts out with what it sees as the
best of intentions.
[ explosions, helicopters ]
Our main character is Callum Roe, a fifteen year
old who along with his brother James was kidnapped
by the glorious path when they were very young and
forced to serve in an army camp.
But several years into his servitude, Callum starts
to realize that the lengths the glorious path is
going to go to win this war.
Callum's desire to take his brother and leave the
glorious path sets up the first conflict in our
book which is brother versus brother.
It turns out that James isn't quite as eager to
leave the glorious path as Callum is.
What I really wanted to create with The Darkest Path
is a nonstop action adventure story.
This is about a young boy traveling across a
country that is absolutely torn apart by war.
Two armies fighting viciously neither of which
accepts Callum and both of which he has to deal with
over the course of this story.
And he's going all the way across the country to a
home that he's not even sure it will exist when he
gets there.

For Colette, this was going to be the trip of a lifetime.
PARIS A senior class trip to the City of Lights.
The sights, the food, the music, the parties and
the MURDERS.
Throughout the city, lurks a bizarre serial killer
and the victims have all been beheaded.
They have one thing in common.
All are descendants of people who were close Marie Antoinette.
And it looks like Colette is next on the list.
Is any trip really worth dying for?
I'm Katie Alender and a lot of people ask me why I
made Marie Antoinette into a serial killer?
But if you think about it, she was a queen who had
everything she could have ever wanted, and she
lived a life of total luxury and opulence and then
one day a bunch of people took her and ended up
chopping her head off.
So if that doesn't make for an angry ghost, I don't
know what would.
This book is the story of Colette an American girl
who goes on a Spring break trip to Paris with her
class and realizes that there is a murderer in the
city that might be coming after her.
It was really amazing to research this book I got
to go to places like Versailles which is the royal
palace and then I got to go to the catacombs which
are the opposite of that.
They're dark and damp and scary...really, really
scary and filled with bones which is very creepy.
It feels like maybe the most haunted place that
you could possibly imagine.
I mean, I don't see how it could not be haunted
...it's full of bones.
Colette wasn't looking for romance but she ends up
having to choose between two boys.
One of them is this mature, mysterious, rich,
handsome, French guy with an awesome accent and the
other one is the tour guide, Jules, who seems sort
of normal at the beginning and then Collette
realizes that he is very sweet and very, very, very cute.
I know you're going to love this book because not
only is it a scary ghost story, but it's a chance
to experience the city of Paris and it's got a
little bit of romance too.
Will Colette lose her head over a trip that she
thought was ...to die for?
