Welcome to this video about the second Act of The Magic Flute,
now, the days... here we are, is the moment...
These operas at the opera house are very special, because
since they sell tickets a long time in advance, then you forget about it,
so, finally the show arrives in a jiffy
therefore, as I was saying: here it is,
so we will show you this second Act of the Magic Flute
During the preparation of the video I was wondering what were the criteria
we had adopted to select the scenes to draw
in fact, practically, the first drawing of the second Act is this one
which is far ahead in the story.
Here you can see Pamina lying on a flower bed
and her mother: the Queen of the Night, who offers her a dagger.
We said that Monostatos had a weakness for Pamina
and in fact in this scene she is sleeping and he hovers around her
so comes the Queen of the Night and throws him out.
Then she asks Pamina where is the young man who she sent to her
and she replies that he has embraced the way of the initiates;
so the Queen of the Night gets really disappointed
and says to her that, now Pamina is lost as she was lost herself in hers turn
as hers man had choose in his turn the same path.
So she gives her that dagger
and assigns to her the task to kill Sarastro with the dagger.
Here there is again a huge jump
basically we had missed a part, and quite important, to tell the truth,
in which Sarastro teaches Tamino and Papageno
that one important thing in their discipline is silence:
then he gives them the task to maintain silence...
Here you see the children who have given food to Papageno
and to Tamino, I do not remember... whether they gave...
what did they give? Do you remember?
The flute?
Maybe the flute, perhaps they brng once again the flute,
because from time to time they gave it to him again...
so Tamino begins to play,
Pamina hear the sound of his flute, she comes up and starts talking to him, of course
because she do not know that he has the task to remain silent;
he, rather than answering, really suffering just keeps playing
In fact, we had thought to draw this, let's say, egg shaped bubble
to represent the fact that Tamino maintains silence.
Then Pamina is pretty desperate and says: this is worse than death... oh by the way...
this thing is very nice, because
practically, in this scene, the children arrive in a flying machine
and with that flying machine almost all the set designers satisfy their fancy
and this is always an expectation: one of the Magic Flute expectations
It is to see how was imagined this flying machine,
at least from my point of view, but I do not know about other people.
And here there is, in fact, Pamina desperate, once again on a bed of flowers
that, let's say, in familiarise herself with the dagger
and has a kind of conversation, as I was saying, with the dagger and invites it to kill her, because
life does not has any sense if Tamino does not love her
In fact, she interpreted that Tamino's silence
as a demonstration that he does not longer love her.
So the children are seeing her, they come closer and say:
"Let's stay for a while hereby side and let's hear what she says"
and at one point they comment: what sort of dark words says Pamina.
And when Pamina is about to stab herself with the dagger,
the children stop her and reassure her that
Tamino, of course, loves her as he did before
and they stop that tragic action of Pamina.
Here there is another point that reminds us of our shortcomings
in fact, here, a kind of second chance is given to Papageno
because Papageno had also the task to maintain silence
But he met a...
I cannot...
you cannot say "girl" because in some versions,
well, she is usually an elderly person, in that scene,
however, he met a woman and talked to her
and this thing was against the rule they had received.
He meet again this person who, although looks like an elderly person,
she says to being quite young ...
I think she says to be 18 years old and a few minutes... something like that.
But she looks pretty old.
And Papageno, amazed by this early age that she declares,
asks her if she has also a boyfriend, and she says yes.
and answers that this boyfriend is named Papageno
and that he is just in front of her.
Papageno is very amazed to hear that
and she press asking him to be faithful forever
Papageno, initially is not very convinced, but she
let's say that she blackmails him or something, so he promises loyalty
and adds softly, "as long as I will see you more attractive"
so Papagena turns to the young girl who said she was
and just see that she has the little bird on his head, just like Papageno,
then you can say that it is precisely kindred spirits.
Let's see what comes now...
Well, here we skipped another piece, although not so important,
well not pivotal,
Tamino was in front of the doors that lead through fire, water and air
he take these ways without fear
but, in the distance Pamina calls him and asks to wait
and she say that next to him would go through any fire, any water,
and then they pass together through these elements.
Here there is another tragic moment of the tale,
In fact, what I did not say before, as I was talking about Papageno and Papagena,
is the fact that he get punished once again because he has spoken
so Papagena is taken away to him
he is again desperate and wants to hang himself
or at least, he would like to do it, but he feels like he does not have the courage
then speaks a whole monologue, tied the rope on a branch of the tree
and he start put his neck in the noose
and he asks for confirmation whether he really must do it;
He says: "I will count up to three and then I'll do it"
he count slowly, but, he gets some disappointed because no one stops him
at least, down to the wire, because then
come the children back to fix things, they tell him he must not be consumed with love
and he replies, "but you are young, you do not know how much love can hurt
and they correct him and say:
"just ring your magic bells, and you'll see her coming to you"
and then he says: "ah, I'm so stupid: I forgot those little magic things"
So, he plays loud his magic bells
and again Papagena appears who finally may stay with him
and they plan together how will be their lives.
And so we came to the end...
Now, I do not remember very well this part,
there is the Queen of the Night who wants to enter in the temple,
I do not know whether she wants to kill personally Sarastro or what else,
however, come the sunrays that dissipates the darkness of night
and so ends the opera, and Tamino and Pamina as well are finally together.
