Act I
Phoenix Wright
My name is Phoenix Wright. Some call me Nick.
I'm an attorney.
Right now, I'm revisiting the records of a certain trial.
To me, this case...
is one that I'll never forget.
I see your image on a distant wave...
You tremble, then vanish.
Your voice, carried on the waves,
fades upon the shore,
erasing the splendor of the past.
Yes...our unexpected reunion happened on that day.
Man, I'm exhausted!
Wonder who that is?
You again!
I'm back...
Why are you back?
News Inabit
Just hear me out one more time!
I'm not changing my mind no matter how many times you come!
Please!
Don't be so cold-hearted!
Just leave!
What I do is my own business, so go bother someone else!
How...how could you be so cruel?
Please...won't you reconsider?
Leave!
Can't I do anything to convince you?
LEAVE!
Please, I'm begging you!
-I don't want it! I already have a newspaper subscription...
-Like I need that...
Cheapskate!
That woman shows up every week...
I told you I don't want it!
Yo, Nick! Maya here?
Now what?
Larry Butz
To see Maya's cute face, of course!
Maya! Maya!
This guy is Larry Butz.
He's an old classmate of mine.
He's always causing trouble, but you just can't hate the guy.
What's someone like him doing here, you ask?
Well...he's kinda hard to get rid of.
Maya!
She's not here!
Oh...
Well, I'm free today, so I guess I'll just wait here.
You're always free!
Seriously, isn't it about time you found a job?
And what about you?
What about me?
Don't play dumb!
You know...that special someone...
That's all you ever talk about.
Don't tell me you're still thinking about her.
Leona.
I knew it! You can't stop thinking about the girl who used to love you...
How romantic!
Oh please. That's all in the past.
Oh really?
Yeah, really.
Eh, makes sense I guess. It's been two years and all.
I’m back!
-Maya!
How you been?
Lookin’ good as always! Glad I managed to catch you—
Welcome back!
Maya Fey
This is my assistant, Maya.
She’s as ditzy as they come.
Oh, and about her outfit…she apparently comes from a family of spirit mediums.
...It's best not to mention it to her.
Hey, did you finish packing?
Packing?
Don’t tell me you forgot! You promised to take me to the ocean after the next trial!
I did?
Playing dumb's not gonna work!
Anyway, let’s go! Time to pack, time to pack!
Nick! What's this 'bout you two takin' a trip together?
What’re you to her, anyway?
I'm so…alone…!
Don't leave me!
Geez, can’t a guy get some rest?
This a global broadcast?
Good evening, everyone. I’m Moeno Crystal.
Our first story of the evening:
Senator Robert Cole was discovered dead today in the parking lot of the New York governor’s residence.
The suspect is one of the governor’s legal advisors, Leona Clyde, age 24.
The suspect got into an argument with the Senator and then stabbed him with a knife she had in her possession.
She was caught in the act by a police officer who rushed to the scene.
The police are currently investigating the suspect’s motive and the details surrounding the incident.
Leona...
Leona, a murderer?
No way!
Leona Clyde is a native of California…
I’m ready~!
Huh? Nick? Nick?
What could possibly have happened to this woman? The truth remains shrouded in mystery.
Where did he go…?
Next…
According to a recent government investigation,
there have been several reported sightings of a strangely dressed young woman near the ocean…
Leona…
Leona Clyde
Mr. Phoenix Wright. It’s been a while.
Y-yeah, it has.
Um…
Mr. Wright.
I'm still undergoing investigation.
I was given special permission to meet you thanks to the prosecutor’s generosity.
If you have nothing to say, then please excuse me.
Leona!
Yes?
I couldn't believe the news, so I rushed here as fast as I could.
There’s no way you’re a murderer.
-Mr. Wright.
The news story is true.
The suspect in this case has confessed to all charges.
I murdered Senator Cole.
That’s a lie. You wouldn’t *** anyone.
Mr. Wright...I'm not the woman you once knew.
Times change.
People change.
Leona…
Then let me ask you this.
Why did you change?
People’s hearts don’t change. I firmly believe that.
The Leona that I know
is a woman full of hopes and dreams who dedicates her life to helping the weak.
If you've really changed,
then tell me why!
That’s not for you to know.
Leona…
I’m glad we got to meet after so long.
Thank you for coming.
Wait!
What about a lawyer? Do you have one?
No lawyer would defend someone who admits to killing a senator.
I’m waiting for a court-appointed attorney.
Once my trial begins, they’ll probably sentence me immediately.
In that case, let me defend you.
What…?
Submit an official request. I'll be your lawyer.
What are you talking about?
I still believe you’re the same person you were back then.
I'll never accept that you’re a murderer.
Let me prove your innocence!
Don't be so full of yourself!
I've already confessed my guilt.
Not to mention the victim was a politician!
It's foolish to think you can win this case.
That’s for me to decide!
Leona…I will defend you!
No you won’t! Don’t ever come here again.
I’ll come as many times as I have to!
You of all people should know.
Once I decide to do something, I see it through to the end.
Until you write that request…
I'm not giving up!
I never thought that you'd be the one representing me.
I'll have my request delivered to you.
Leona…
Don’t forget.
Your client has confessed her guilt.
Leona...
I remember it clearly.
You believed in me.
You saved me.
And this time, I will definitely…
I will definitely save you!
As long as there
are people in this world,
there’s only one path
I will follow!
As long as there
is love in this world,
there’s only one path
I will believe in!
Like the immortal phoenix,
a new legend arises!
I will spend...
this eternal life...
soaring through...
the heavens!
Thus, I took up Leona’s case.
I vowed to trust in her innocence and fight on her behalf.
To resurrect the truth buried in this courtroom…
I revealed all contradictions…
Exposed all false testimonies…
That's right...
I channeled my soul’s cry into a single finger and shouted...
OBJECTION!

Only one month left until the test.
Think you'll be ready?
Not really...
Well that's no good!
Anyway, I'll do my best!
Are you—
You've probably got nothing to worry about, huh.
That's not true at all!
I always worry about what'll happen if I fail.
After all, both my parents were lawyers.
If I failed law school, it'd be a disgrace to their memory.
That's so typical of you.
I've got other things to worry about.
Oh please!
Anyway, let's both do our best to graduate.
Yup!
The view here never changes, huh?
Whenever I gaze at this ocean, everything feels so peaceful.
But on the other side of this ocean
are people crying out for help who never receive it.
I will save them.
That's right...
One person suffering is one too many.
I want to help them.
Hey, Leona...
Recently, I've been thinking about when we were kids.
Watching you chase your dream inspired me to become a lawyer.
Something bothering you?
Oh, i-it's just, I can't believe our journey's almost over.
Yeah, time sure flies!
It's already been ten years since we first met.
Nick...?
Leona...
I want us to keep chasing dreams forever.
Together.
I've felt this way for a long time.
It might've just been a crush at first...
But now I know for sure.
Leona...
I love you.
Nick...!
When I’m thinking of you,
there’s nothing I fear...
I'll always be by your side
supporting you...
But I’m pushy,
selfish,
only care about my work...
You’d get tired of me…
That's what I've always admired about you.
That's who I've been chasing all these years.
That's the only person...
whom I love.
Nick...!
I love you...
I love you...
Under the constellations illuminating the night sky...
our hearts shine as one.
I love you...
I love you...
The resplendent pearls that paint the sea...
tell tales of our love.
I love you...
I love you...
You're the only one...
whom I love.
Oh shooting star,
I have but one wish...
To love you.
***!
***!
*** strikes again!
A huge incident...
that's thrown the world...
into sheer chaos!
And to make matters worse,
the governor's very own
legal advisor is the one
who committed this terrible crime!
Poor Governor Miller!
Played by Kanon Mai
And right before the presidential election, too!
Reporter
is in an uproar over this incident!
Everyone!
I apologize for the commotion.
Concerning the crime perpetrated by my legal advisor, Leona Clyde...
Kotobuki Tsukasa
I offer my deepest apologies.
Nothing can excuse this heinous crime.
And to think that my own legal advisor did this...
I feel personally responsible.
I will to get to the bottom of this.
And to ensure something like this never happens again,
I vow to forge a peaceful country with these very hands,
and to prepare myself for whatever lies ahead.
Just as we expected
from our Governor Miller!
Through thick and thin,
he's a friend of the people!
Just as we expected
from our Governor Miller!
Through thick and thin,
he's a friend of the people!
That's right...it's almost the presidential election, isn't it?
And such a big incident happens now of all times...
That guy we just saw is gonna be the next President?
No, we don't know that yet.
Well, he does have high approval ratings.
There's no doubt his reputation's taken a hit, though.
So why would Leona *** someone at a time like—
S-sorry.
Anyway, let's go investigate the crime scene.
Okay!
So this parking lot is the crime scene?
I can smell *** in the air!
Those people over there—
HEY YOU!
Authorized personnel only, pal!
*** Gumshoe
W-wait! I'm Phoenix Wright, attorney.
And I'm his assistant, Maya!
You're a lawyer?
Yup, he's Leona's lawyer!
Leona Clyde's lawyer...!
I get it! They chose you, pal?
That's too bad, pal.
Huh? The defendant came to me herself...
Hey mister, are you with the police?
That's right, pal.
America's #1 Detective, *** Gumshoe—that's me, pal.
Been on the job for seven years now.
I pour my soul into useless investigations and pointless rambling!
You won't find another detective like me anywhere!
You can say that again...
Hey Detective, is that the crime scene over there?
Yeah.
Well,
if you're in charge of the case, I guess I can let you look around, pal.
But she's guilty with a capital "G!"
Oops, almost let the cat outta the bag there...
What do you mean, "With a capital 'G'"?
Just like I said! The suspect took that knife...
and plunged it into the victim's chest like this!
And a photographer got a picture of it!
"A photographer snapped the stabbing!"
Take it from a veteran cop, pal.
She's guilty as can be!
Thanks, Detective. We'll begin our investigation now.
Anytime, pal.
That detective's got quite a mouth, huh?
Yeah, he's definitely one of a kind...
I wonder how he's gonna trip up the investigation?
Hurry and sneeze before your brain explodes!
Whew, that was close!
He's really tripping.
-Yeah.
Anyway, let's go.
Look! A cellphone!
Hello? It's Maya—
Maya!
It'll keep a record of your call...
Really?!
You didn't know that...?
Nick!
How 'bout I use this to slice up some beef
and make some extra-large hamburgers?
Maya...
How 'bout you put that back?
...Where was it?
Oh well, I'll just put it here.
Maya...
By the way Nick, who is Leona anyway?
Oh, she was my classmate when I was in California.
We both wanted to become lawyers.
Both her parents were attorneys.
They were among the best.
"Were?"
Leona's parents died of illness when she was young.
She inherited her parents' ambition and became a lawyer.
I see...
Does she have any siblings?
Yeah, a younger sister.
When her parents died,
she decided to become a doctor to help the sick.
She's Leona's sister, so I've got no doubt she'll be a great doctor.
So that's what happened...
Anyway, I think we're about done here.
Yeah.
What I really wanna see is that photo.
That guy's gonna be called to the stand for sure.
Yeah, with a *** photo and an eyewitness account...
Leaving already?
Yeah, I think we've found everything we can.
Huh, you don't say!
But no matter what you do, you don't stand a chance, pal!
And how the heck would you know that?!
We won't know if she's innocent or guilty till the trial ends!
That's what you're saying now, pal.
Hate to break it to you, pal, but you're in over your head.
And why is that?
Because the prosecutor for this case...
is none other than Miles Edgeworth, pal!
Edgeworth?!
That's right, pal!
MILES EDGEWORTH!
The one and only!
Edgeworth...
He hasn't lost a single case since becoming a prosecutor at 20.
The Prosecutor's Office has dubbed him a genius.
He's a demon who feels neither pain nor remorse...
Miles Edgeworth
A cold-hearted prosecutor who'll do anything to get a guilty verdict.
He hates crime with an almost abnormal passion.
I never imagined I'd be facing him so soon...
Shrouded in scarlet solitude...
Edgeworth!
A crimson blaze that consumes darkness itself...
Edgeworth!
"False charges..."
"Innocence..."
I believe none of it.
Those who try...
to escape...
from their sins...
will absolutely not...
be forgiven!
Those who hate...
Those who grieve...
If I can help soothe their anguish...
Then I'll hunt down the suspects,
and corner them on the stand,
no matter what the cost!
My rules.
I'm the one who decides
my rules.
I'm the one who guides
my rules.
No matter how tragic the outcome...
The flame of my justice...
will reduce all criminals to ash!
Cold and calculated...
My...
rules.
The court is now in session for the *** of Senator Robert Cole.
Judge
The defense is ready, Your Honor.
The prosecution is ready, as always.
Would the defendant please state her name and occupation?
So it finally begins...
Leona's trial!
Leona Clyde, legal advisor to Governor Miller.
Mr. Edgeworth, please give the court your opening statement.
The defendant, Leona Clyde,
was in the parking lot of the governor's residence when she got into an argument with Senator Robert.
She then used a knife she was carrying to brutally stab the victim,
who died due to blood loss.
The crime: ***.
That's all.
Defendant, you—
There's no need to explain my right to remain silent.
The prosecution's statement is correct.
Just what I expect from the governor's legal advisor...
Your Honor!
The defense believes the defendant to be innocent.
Oh? So the defense intends to deny the charges?
Hmm...seems like this trial might drag on for a while...
Your Honor.
No need to worry.
Just focus on the proceedings.
The prosecution calls the detective who arrested the defendant,
*** Gumshoe, to the stand!
Wonder if he'll trip up again?
Witness, your name and occupation.
It's time!
My big courtroom debut!
I'm all fired up and ready to testify!
Witness, your name and occupation please...
That didn't take long.
S-sorry about that.
The thought of being on the witness stand kept me up for days...
NAME AND OCCUPATION!
Y-YES SIR!
*** Gumshoe, NYPD Detective.
Hurry up and testify about the arrest!
My pleasure!
I can't believe this is it!
It's been 7 years if I recall correctly...
Trained so hard I barely slept,
barely ate,
nothin' but work work work!
Early to bed, early to rise...
Didn't make any money, though.
Ate nothin' but nasty homemade stuff.
Ended up with food poisoning...
Witness!
Stop your pointless rambling!
I'm looking forward to your next salary review...
U-ugh...
That's harsh!
That's Edgeworth.
Alright. Let's keep it short and to the point, shall we?
You got it, sir!
I rushed to the scene as soon as I was notified.
There I found a cellphone—and a ton of blood.
And the suspect was standing over the dead body with the knife.
It was ***, plain as day.
And she was caught red-handed!
-Case closed.
We've established that the wound was caused by the suspect's knife.
Your Honor, I submit the autopsy report and the *** weapon as evidence.
The suspect is clearly the murderer.
That is all.
I trust my performance was adequate.
Of course it was! Magnificent! An open-and-shut case.
Just what I expected—
Hold it!
Your Honor. The defense has not yet done its cross-examination.
Hmm, I'm not entirely convinced we need one...
No, let's continue.
Let's examine this "proof" the defense has, shall we?
Who does the cellphone you found belong to?
The suspect, pal. We already confirmed that!
Did you check the call records?
Of course!
The last call was made to Governor Miller around the time of the crime.
The Governor?
She probably wanted him to look the other way and help her cover up the crime!
Such conduct is unforgivable!
OBJECTION!
That's nothing but speculation, Your Honor!
And the defense hasn't finished its cross-examination!
Dammit!
That was a dirty move.
He's making Leona look bad to the jury...
Next question!
You said you rushed to the scene as soon as you were notified,
but how long did that take, exactly?
About...five minutes, I'd say.
Five minutes? Wow, that's fast!
HEY!
You tryin' to make a fool outta me?!
"Haste makes waste!"
That's my motto, pal!
Witness!
You're wasting my patience and your salary!
S-SORRY!
A-Anyway, we're talkin' about the Governor's residence!
There were already tons of police there!
So after you got there, you arrested the suspect?
That's right!
And when I got there,
the suspect was standing over the corpse. Caught in the act!
OBJECTION!
There was already a corpse when you arrived?
Which means you didn't see the actual moment of the crime?
Huh?!
You said you caught her red-handed,
but if you didn't see the crime...
then that's NOT red-handed!
Noooooo!
Nice one, Nick! And just in the "nick" of time!
Mr. Edgeworth! What is the meaning of this?
The defense should do its homework next time.
Excuse me?
You say it's not "red-handed" if he didn't see the moment of the stabbing,
so I ask you,
what exactly do you consider "red-handed"?
Witnessing the moment of the crime, naturally.
That's called an "eyewitness," you idiot!
Get it together, Mr. Wright! You even got me confused!
You sounded so sure I started to believe you myself!
So much for that.
It matters not.
Consider it a prelude to the poignant Greek tragedy that’s about to unfold.
The real tragedy is your bad attitude!
-Detective Gumshoe! -That's me!
Good work. You may leave.
Huh? Already? I still have some great theories...
Detective!
You make a fine clown but a lousy detective!
Shall I adjust your pay accordingly?
No, boss! So sorry!
-Does he do birthdays? -You should ask him.
Enough small talk. I summon my witness to the stand.
A photographer who saw the moment of the ***.
-A *** witness you say? -Precisely!
She is the heroine who took center stage in this tragedy.
You'll find her testimony to be most incriminating.
So incriminating that the defendant may be found guilty even without it...
I call the amateur photographer who was there at that tragic moment,
Ms. Lotta Heart, to the stand!
You best watch yourself, city slicker! I got ears, ya know!
Who ya callin' amateur?!
Played by Mikaze Maira
I pour all o' mah heart into every scoop!
You better believe each shot is fulla heart, buster!
There's a surplus of weirdos today.
That accent wouldn't fool a Brit!
Is this your "heroine?" You have a rather broad definition of the term...
While she may look and sound the way she does,
she is a valuable witness who captured the moment of the *** on film!
I ask that you pardon the noise.
Where do ya get off talkin' to your witness like that?
You and your fancy city talk ain't worth squat!
Well then, moving right along...
An eyewitness account of the *** is paramount in this investigation.
-Albiet obnoxious. -Hey!
Kiss my grits!
The South has risen again.
All this talk about grits is making me hungry!
Ms. Heart. Please state your name and occupation.
Enough of yer yankee lip-flappin'!
Name's Lotta Heart.
Be it cheatin' celebrities or flyin' saucers,
you can bet your *** that me and my camera are gonna be there!
Call me a hack and I'll double shot you but good!
-Not a double shot! -Darn tootin'!
I might just go 'clicky-click' any ol' time!
I'd like to submit the picture our photographer took as evidence.
-Hold onta your britches! -Not so fast.
You'll need to change them after viewing this damning evidence!
TAKE THAT!
That's TOO incriminating!
Don't give up Nick!
My proof is absolutely flawless.
What say you, your Honor?
Sounds like an open and shut case to me!
Ms. Heart, please describe to the court what you witnessed that day.
I stake my life on every scoop!
And everyone's got their own story to sell!
Working for peanuts day in and day out...
I finally got the sixteen hundred bucks for my camera.
This baby's made from mah sweat and tears!
When I got this puppy in my hands, every 'lil thing becomes a scoop!
Heard 'bout a meeting with the governor on the grapevine, so I drove over to his place.
When I got there, I spied this spooky twosome in the parking garage!
I hurried up my camera to catch them big juicy crawdads,
but I wasn't expecting for the one to get murdered!
To clean up your train wreck of a narrative,
you pointed your camera at them,
thus snapping the *** with the help of a certain mental tick.
I ain't got no ticks!
It was my killer instincts! Right here!
Would the defense like to question the witness?
Of course.
Give 'em heck, Nick!
So you drove to the governor's residence. Who else was in the parking garage?
Not a soul, sweetie.
-No one at all? -Nope.
There should have been reporters and cameramen there for the meeting.
They musta been in the meeting already.
Making you...
Late. Ain't it obvious?
A girl needs her beauty sleep!
I'll say.
So you saw a suspicious couple in the parking lot.
What made them suspicious?
My killer instincts. You got spuds in your ears?
You need a more concrete reason than that.
You got a man and a women together alone in a parkin' garage.
If that ain't suspicious, then I best quit my job!
-But... -OBJECTION!
The question is irrelevant.
There was a press conference in progress.
Being alone in the parking garage is reasonable grounds for suspicion.
If you'd been there, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd hauled you in on the spot!
Don't drag me into this!
Objection sustained.
We've been sustained!
The defense must change its line of questioning.
You stated that you pointed your camera because you felt something there.
Define this "something."
It was that kinda somethin' somethin'.
-Nouns and adjectives, please. -OBJECTION!
I remind you that you're talking to a professional photographer.
She possesses a finely honed sense that's beyond your layman understanding.
Yeah, mah killer instincts!
I'm a double shot tycoon!
HOLD IT!
What was that?
-"Double shot"? -Yes'um.
It's mah bread and butter.
You'll need plenty of butter for that toast you just burnt.
Whuddya mean?
"Double shot."
Meaning you pressed the switch twice.
Darn tootin'.
Meaning there are two photos.
Witness.
Care to explain where the other photo is?
I gave it to that city boy!
What?! You mean the prosecution is hiding critical evidence?
Your Honor!
The defense asks that the witness' second photo be presented!
Prosecutor Edgeworth! What is the meaning of this?
My apologies.
I opted not to present the second photo, as it's nearly identical to the first.
Lies!
The photo shows something contrary to the prosecution's interests.
Thus your concealment!
Understood.
The court asks the prosecution to present the photograph.
Very well.
You may feast your starving eyes!
This is the moment of the ***!
There are 500 individuals gathered here today, including young children.
If this photo would not affect the outcome,
I thought it best not to expose them to such graphic content.
Not so fast.
This photo holds the key to breaking through the prosecution's facade.
What does the defense say?
Nick!
This photograph grossly contradicts the witness' statement.
Well then, please present it to the court.
Where is the contradiction in this photograph?
TAKE THAT!
Take a good look at the weapon.
There is blood on the blade.
How can there be blood on the blade if the victim is yet to be stabbed?
OBJECTION!
The accused stabbed the victim once, then again to finish him off!
It's only natural that there would be blood on the knife.
I don't think so.
The autopsy report only shows one stabbing!
A stabbing not shown in this photograph!
Then what does it show?
We need a turnabout in thinking. Only then can we see the truth.
-A turnabout? How? -You see...
It doesn't show the stabbing, but rather the weapon being removed!
My... my goodness!
Prosecutor Edgeworth!
The courtroom illuminates all truth.
Cloud it as you might, the truth will shine through!
The defense is correct. While the photo appears to show the moment of the ***,
it can not be considered incriminating evidence.
Court is adjourned for the day.
Proceedings will continue tomorrow.
We made it to day two!
You useless, self-taught amateur!
What the heck you yellin' at me for?!
Court is officially adjourned!
Leona...
Good going Nick!
That's one underhanded and crafty prosecutor!
And your turnabout cut a little too close!
I agree. However...
If my client is innocent, the witnesses will contradict themselves.
And I will expose those contradictions!
Great!
...He says with great bravado.
Let's hope for a repeat tomorrow.
That reminds me...
I still haven't met with Governor Miller.
What am I waiting for?
The governor will be with you shortly.
-Please take a seat. -Thank you very much.
Sorry to keep you waiting, my boy!
It's a pleasure to meet you.
I'm defense attorney Phoenix Wright.
Thank you for making time for me on such short notice.
Not at all!
Anything for Leona's lawyer.
Don't hesitate to call upon me if I may be of assistance.
It's a huge relief to hear that, sir.
Well then, if we may get down to business...
Do you know anything about Leona Clyde's case?
I've already been thoroughly questioned by the police.
But I haven't the foggiest.
To think that she was a murderer...I was most surprised!
She still hasn't been found guilty.
But she's already confessed to the stabbing!
We have a real quagmire on our hands.
I agree with you there.
By the way...
Why did you hire Leona as your legal advisor?
Why, you ask?
It's in her blood!
This is probably old news to you, but her deceased parents were both renowned lawyers.
Her father Lewis Clyde was the best attorney general in the country.
And her mother Evilyn Clyde was a top-class defense attorney.
They passed away much too soon.
Truly, they were cut down in their prime.
Their names still carry great influence.
Their daughter is worth one thousand lawyers!
Yet it doesn't follow that Leona would inherit her parent's abilities.
You must have some other reason.
Listen, my boy.
She is an extremely skilled woman.
During her time in law school, her marks were absolutely stellar!
I see you've had your eye on her for a while now.
Do you normally check the academic records of your new hires?
My boy...
You just crossed the line.
Are you interrogating me?
Oh no...
I wouldn't dare.
The bond between lawyers and politicians runs deep.
The daughter of two renowned lawyers who decides to follow in her parents' footsteps!
Who wouldn't expect great things?
Excuse me.
Governor, you have a call from Mr. Johnson.
Thank you. I'll be there in a moment.
You'll have to excuse me, my boy.
Of course.
The bond between lawyers and politicians runs deep, huh...
That's way out of my field.
One thing I do know...
is that the governor has great digs!
He didn't skimp on the furnishings, either.
A desk lamp. It's heavier than it looks.
Nice and fuzzy.
Don't mind if I do.
"My fellow countrymen!"
Nah, too stately.
Slick little pen.
Ow!
It gets the point across.
What's this?
A knife!
I've never seen one like this before.
-I brought you some coffee. -Much obliged!
What did you stuff into your pocket?
Uh, my hand?
-Hey, watch it! -Sorry!
-I leave you alone for two minutes... -I'm sorry!
I'm really sorry.
Wait, isn't this...
My, that takes me back.
I have a copy too. It means a lot.
Is this Senator Robert?
He passed away yesterday.
Yes...
How could that have happened?
I'm sure the governor is also troubled by his passing.
Were the two of them close?
Yes, very much so. The governor adored him.
He was so pleasant and sincere.
But after his little brother died, he began to withdraw.
He was never the same again.
Who could blame him?
Who was his younger brother?
He's right there in the picture.
His name was Louis.
Can you tell me why he died?
Are you sure you're a lawyer?
-How can you not know the case? -I'm sorry...
The Jack Lyon case...
A serial killer was on trial for ***. He escaped during the proceedings.
Louis tried to apprehend the murderer. The two stabbed each other...
and Louis passed away.
That was two years ago.
It's tragic to see siblings murdered.
So Senator Robert's younger brother was also killed...
This photo...
Lying out in the open...
It's like someone wanted me to find it.
Sorry about that, my boy!
I'm afraid I must take my leave. Sudden business.
You came all the way to see me and we barely had time to talk.
No, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule.
I hope you'll be able to reduce Leona's sentence.
Something the matter?
If I may say so, sir...the courtroom is not a place to judge guilt.
Oh?
The courtroom is a place to reveal the truth.
I believe in Leona's innocence.
And I will prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt!
Leona...
Even if the whole world turns its back on you,
I will always be there to fight on your side!
Your smile...
Our happiness...
I'll take back what we've lost!
I see your image on a distant wave...
You tremble, then vanish.
Your voice, carried on the waves...
fades upon the shore,
erasing the splendor of the past.
A sand castle is erased by the encroaching waves…
As the sun descends into the azure sea.
I'm the one who decides...
Even as I follow the winding path of fate…
I'm the one who guides...
No matter how tragic the outcome...
Even as I count the departing seasons…
I'll reduce all criminals to ash!
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
We set off together, hand in hand...
Your reflection illuminating the path before me.
And race towards the future...
I'll guide you to the future.
to seek the truth.
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
I love you...
I love you...
And race towards the future…
You're the only one
and the truth reborn.
whom I love.
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
My rules.
Even as I follow a path surrounded by tragedy…
My rules.
My rules.
Even as I count my falling tears…
I decide my rules.
I decide.
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
And race towards the future...
to seek the truth.
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
Act II
The *** didn't occur in the parking lot.
However, the allegations surrounding Leona still remain.
I need to find hard evidence that proves her innocence.
There must be something we missed.
-Nick! -What is it?
This knife...
could carve up a cow!
Sure...
Let me whip up my special spirit channeler hamburgers!
Let's focus on the clues for now.
-Right! -Right...
Was it okay for you to steal it?
I didn't steal it! It ended up in my pocket.
I'll return it later.
That reminds me... there's also this picture.
The one from the Governor?
What about it?
This is Detective Louis.
He's Senator Robert's little brother.
He had a little brother?
He also died handling a case.
What case?
The Jack Lyon case.
The accused escaped during his trial and killed Detective Louis.
To think that both brothers were murdered...
It didn't occur to me then,
but they must have been close to the mayor to be in this picture.
Good point...
-You mean...! -That's right.
Everyone involved has too much in common for it to be a coincidence.
We should look into it!
Coming!
The Jack Lyon case...
Nick! Come quick!
We're under attack!
-Pardon me. -Edgeworth!
Busy tripping over yourself preparing for tomorrow's trial?
Don't you have false evidence to plant?
That's no way to greet a guest.
What do you want?
-I came to offer my advice. -About what?
You took up this case of your own accord.
Leona Clyde is your old flame.
Don't make this about trying to win her back.
Keep your emotions out of it!
Even a no-talent lawyer like you can see the gravity of this case.
Edgeworth...
Could you say that if you were the one on trial?
What?
The defendant is in a dark prison, reaching out for hope...
Can you imagine the loneliness and sorrow of being ostracized?
I became a lawyer to fight for these outcasts, to do what no one else will!
The victim was a politician.
Politicians and lawyers are both human! Their positions don't change that.
I want to save Leona, as a laywer!
I admire your zeal.
But reality is not as generous.
I'll burn your ideals to so much ash.
I'll stop at nothing to get a guilty verdict.
But why?
-How can you do that to innocent... -Innocent?!
How can we know their innocence?
They'd betray the world if it meant going free.
We can't discern their lies.
Which is why...
There is only one thing that I can do as a prosecutor.
Find each and every defendant guilty.
That is my rule.
Edgeworth...
You've changed since then.
How long have you known this guy?
We were classmates with Larry.
So he knows Leona too?!
How could you send your own friend to the chopping block?!
My friend?
She is nothing more than the accused.
You're heartless.
Maya, can you put on a pot of coffee?
That's twisted.
Better keep that firecracker away from your hot head.
Tell me Edgeworth. Why do people change?
What now?
Leona's complete transformation shocked me.
She used to be so kind, so full of life!
Now she's cold as ice.
Like you.
People are made to change.
You're the exception to that rule.
Is that so wrong?
The old you and Leona felt more human to me.
People have different philosophies.
You live your way. I live my way.
I see.
We started with the same goal, set out on different paths,
and later met as different people, seeking different answers!
The world is full of contradictions.
Contradictions come with the territory.
And the courtroom.
Edgeworth, I'm not as skilled as you, nor as capable.
But there is one thing I have that you don't!
Oh?
Amuse me.
The power to believe!
Believe in what?
To believe in saving the weak!
If proving guilt is your rule,
then believing in the forsaken defendant is mine!
I will not give up!
All I can do...
is believe in Leona!
The coffee's ready!
-Get it while it's hot! -I'll pass.
I'd hate to see my careful planning thwarted by a spiked cup of coffee.
Busted!
Well then. See you in court.
Edgeworth.
Now what?
What do you know about the Jack Lyon case?
Why? What does it mean to you?
I thought you would know about it.
Of course. I handled the prosecution.
Another accomplice!
-He's in on it! -In on what?
That case was resolved long ago.
Check the archives for yourself.
I'll phone ahead for them to let you in.
Thanks. I'll get right on it.
Get your priorities straight.
Abandoning your case to dig up ancient history?
So be it.
All will be revealed in court.
Phoenix Wright.
Expect no mercy.
Farewell.
What a jerk!
Here, have some coffee.
No, I'm good.
Okay then...
Hey Nick! What did you mean by "everyone had the same goal?"
Oh, that...
Long ago, he also wanted to be a defense attorney.
You're kidding!
His father was a famous lawyer.
He would go on and on about becoming the world's best lawyer!
It was the summer of fourth grade.
That's when I was put on trial—a school trial!
A school trial?
One of our classmates had their lunch money stolen.
It was a small school by the ocean in California.
Every month, our parents gave us a money envelope to give to the teacher.
That's original.
One day, the envelope suddenly vanished.
It was stolen during P.E.
I was feeling sick, so I sat out that class.
I was the only one not in the gym.
So they accused you?!
Yeah. Everyone was like, "throw the book at him!"
Not the book!
The hearing was the next day.
I was the defendant.
I didn't do it!
You know better than to steal people's money!
I was utterly alone. The tears wouldn't stop.
I decided to apologize. I started towards the front.
But he stopped me.
Take your seat. No evidence, no trial!
-Edgeworth! -You say you didn't steal my money?
Then stick to your story! The court has found no evidence against you.
Judge, that means this boy is innocent!
-Edgeworth the prosecutor?! -Yup.
When everyone treated me like a criminal, Edgeworth and Leona stood up for me.
Leona...
Stop this farce! You should be ashamed for ganging up on Nick.
Put yourself in his shoes!
He said he didn't do it!
After that, the three of us were inseparable.
You three go way back.
I learned something that day.
The oppressive loneliness of being made an outcast...
And the pain it brings.
Edgeworth and Leona sound like good people.
Afterwards, Edgeworth told me how his father was a lawyer.
When he spoke of his father, his eyes shone like only a child's do.
Someday, I'll be a lawyer like my father!
One as great as him!
How did he become a prosecutor? That's the exact opposite of a lawyer!
His father became too deeply involved in a case...and paid for it with his life.
Edgeworth saw him murdered.
He was never the same again. He couldn't forgive the criminal.
He vanished, then returned without his mercy or compassion.
He had become a monster.
When he lost his father, he also lost the ability to believe in others.
How terrible...
But he still has his humanity.
It's still there, deep down inside!
Nick...
Yo Maya! Lookin' good as always!
-It's investigation time. -I'm going!
Me too!
-I need a small favor. -What do you need?
Pick his brain. See ya.
No problem, chief! Man, he's always on the go!
With Nick out, that leaves me alone with Maya...
Game on!
-Hey Maya. -Hmm?
-There's something I'd like you to hear. -What?
When a man and a woman care for each other,
they plant a tree called "love."
"Love?"
Bullseye. Right to the heart.
And if they cultivate this love,
it grows "forget-me-nots."
Do you get what I'm trying to say?
Oh Larry...!
Maya...
You forgot one thing...
Roses have thorns. Sharp ones.
Ouch.
-I'm jealous. -Of?
That Nick believes in her so much! You knew them when they were dating?
-Kinda. -Tell me what they were like!
They went together like peanut butter and bananas.
Other couples were bland in comparison.
They were way into talking about their dreams and the future.
Like what?
After passing the bar exam, Leona decided to come to New York.
She was going to protect the weak in the big city.
I'll be rooting for you from California!
Nick...
This is the first time we'll be apart since we were kids.
-I'm sorry. -But we'll work through it!
Can I wait for you?
Will you wait for me?
We promised to always be together.
Leona...
I'll be waiting for you. Waiting for you to come for me.
I'll go wherever you are.
You go scout on ahead. I promise to follow you!
I believe...
I believe in you, Nick!
Leona...
We set off together, hand in hand...
Your reflection illuminating the path before me.
I'll guide you to the future.
I love you...
I love you...
You're the only one
whom I love.
They believed in each other. At least, I thought so.
But it was not to be.
One phone call from Leona brought their love to a tragic end.
Hello? Leona?
-I'm so sorry. -For what?
I want to end it. I can't see you anymore.
-Forgive me. -Leona...
Leona!
If they got along so well, why did Leona suddenly break it off?
Beats me. Must be a grown-up problem!
If anyone knows, it's you!
Have some java.
Thanks, my little coffee bean!
What about that prosecutor?
You mean Edgeworth?
He kept Nick from getting burnt at the school court!
Oh yeah, that! We all said that Nick was the culprit.
It cut my heart to ribbons.
Don't you mean Nick's heart?
Yeah, funny story about that...
Did you go to P.E. that day?
I took the day off!
Which makes the real criminal...
Come back here with my lunch money!
Mr. Wright, these visits won't do anything to change my testimony.
I came to ask about a separate case.
I've told you everything I can.
Don't misunderstand. I'm here to talk about the Jack Lyon case.
-The Jack Lyon case? -Yes.
A serial murderer escaped from the courtroom during his hearing,
to kill again in a nearby room.
What does that have to do with me?
I want you to tell me everything you saw.
I don't know anything. That was before I became a lawyer.
I wouldn't know about the defense.
I have a newspaper clipping.
Of course, I don't know the lawyer. But I do know someone in the stand.
It's you, Leona.
You sat in on the trial for your law school studies.
That's irrelevant to my case.
Perhaps...
I paid a visit to Governor Miller yesterday.
I happened upon a photograph.
Governor Miller, his secretary Sara, Senator Robert,
and his younger brother, Detective Louis, the victim in the Jack Lyon case.
Everyone in the photo is connected to the two cases.
That's no coincidence.
Leona, what do you know?
That case was buried along with the two brothers.
I have nothing more to say to you!
-Why hide it? -There's nothing to hide!
I killed Senator Robert!
Leona, you're taking the fall for someone.
Who is it?
You called to break up at the same time as that case.
Are the two connected?
What happened to my Leona?
We promised to protect the weak and believe in each other.
Did you forget our vow?
I believe in you.
So believe in me and tell me!
I'll find a way through this.
-Leona, I still... -Enough!
I have no intention of reminiscing with you.
Leona...!
Wait!
I want to save you!
Senator Robert's murderer...
Senator Robert's murderer...
is me.
I see your image on a distant wave...
You tremble, then vanish.
Your voice, carried on the waves,
fades upon the shore,
erasing the splendor of the past.
Change...
Change...
Why do people change?
Who are you?
Who are you?
You aren't the person I know.
I just...
I just...
have to believe!
I just...
I just...
have to believe in you!
I want to bring you back!
I believe in you.
I see your image on a distant wave...
You tremble, then vanish.
Your voice, carried on the waves,
fades upon the shore,
erasing the splendor of the past.
Nick...
I'm so sorry.
So Leona didn't tell you anything, huh...
Yeah...
But these two crimes are definitely connected!
Coming!
Leona's covering for someone.
But who?
And why didn't she want me to defend her?
Nick, we've got a visitor.
Who is it?
Wait, you're...!
Played by Junya Chitose
Monica? You know her?
She's Leona's younger sister.
Oh! Nice to meet you!
I'm Maya Fey, Nick's assistant.
Sorry for dropping by so suddenly...
No worries! Make yourself comfortable.
Thank you.
Maya, some coffee please.
Have a seat.
I just heard the news about my sister.
I don't know what to do,
and I'm sorry to bother you, but...
Don't worry about it! I'm glad you got here okay.
By the way, you mentioned you were becoming a doctor...?
That's right.
My sis decided to become a lawyer like our parents,
but I decided I wanted to help the sick.
So I always carry my medical kit with me!
You're a one-man emergency room!
That's right!
You never know when someone'll get sick,
so with this, I can operate anywhere!
Even on the street?!
Yep!
I've even got a custom-made, extra-large scalpel!
Wow...
You've really carved out a niche, huh?
You bet!
Um...Nick, you're my sister's lawyer, right?
Yeah...
I think I'm the only one who can save her.
Please...please save sis!
There's no way she's a murderer!
I know that better than anyone.
But...
Ever since that day, she's been...different.
"That day?"
Yeah...
The Jack Lyon incident.
The Jack Lyon incident?!
Do you know something about it?
Y-yeah...
Actually...I was taken hostage by the criminal!
You were taken hostage?!
Are you serious?
Of course!
The police report didn't mention that!
Was there a cover-up...?
This whole thing smells fishy...
Nick?
Monica, you've gotta tell me everything you know.
I think this case is connected to the Jack Lyon incident.
The truth behind this incident
might lead to Leona's innocence!
But...!
This is for Leona's sake!
I wanna save her...
just as badly as you do!
Okay.
I'll tell you everything.
But promise me, Nick...
Promise me you'll save Leona!
Thus, I came one step closer to the truth.
The Jack Lyon case...
The tragic truth lay buried in its depths.
These cases are definitely connected.
I'll prove it at tomorrow's trial.
If I can do that...
Then the way will reveal itself to me!
A sand castle is erased by the encroaching waves…
As the sun descends into the azure sea.
Even as I follow the winding path of fate…
Even as I count the departing seasons…
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
And race towards the future...
to seek the truth.
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
The court is now in session for the *** of Senator Robert Cole.
The defense is ready, Your Honor.
The prosecution is ready, as always.
As I stated during yesterday's proceedings,
the defendant's confession leaves no doubt as to who murdered Senator Cole.
Let us hear what the defense has to say for itself.
Anything to say, defense?
The defense stands by its claim.
The defendant had no part in the victim's ***.
In fact...
This *** is directly linked to a previous case!
What's this?
My investigation of the Senator's ***
led me to an entirely different case.
The case that started it all!
Intriguing.
Then allow me to ask you this.
How did it start?
It all began two years ago at this very courthouse...
The Jack Lyon incident.
That's what started it all.
OBJECTION! That case has already been solved!
Yes, the suspect died and the case was dismissed.
But many of those involved in that case are also involved in this one.
This is no mere coincidence.
Someone care to explain this incident...?
I was in charge of that case.
A suspect accused of being a serial killer attempted to flee the courtroom.
He escaped into the waiting room.
Detective Louis Cole confronted him, but was stabbed and killed.
The bodies of both men were discovered in the room.
Objection!
Your Honor, I object to the defense's claims.
Defendant!
As the prosecution said, that case was already resolved.
There's absolutely no connection to this case!
OBJECTION!
Your Honor, the truth hidden in the Jack Lyon case has yet to be revealed!
The defense requests that the defendant testify about the events of that day!
I don't intend to reopen a closed case.
However, if these two cases are indeed connected, then I'll hear you out.
Then this evidence should be more than enough!
TAKE THAT!
Okay, I see Senator Cole...and with him are...?
His younger brother, Detective Louis Cole.
The victim in the Jack Lyon incident.
I see.
It certainly seems many of the same people are involved.
Well then. I think I'd like to hear what the defense has to say after all.
OBJECTION! Your Honor—
Denied.
We did it, Nick!
What will the defense have the defendant testify about?
The defendant is connected to the Jack Lyon incident.
Your Honor,
I ask the defendant to testify about exactly what happened on that day.
Understood.
This is quite the unusual circumstance,
but I ask that the defendant proceed to the witness stand.
Please tell us exactly what connection you have to the Jack Lyon incident.
The Jack Lyon incident.
That case was solved before I became a lawyer.
I observed the trial as a law student.
So I have no details to offer about the incident.
The only way I'm "connected" to the case
is that I was in the courtroom at the time!
That's all I know.
In other words, she was simply a member of the audience.
There's no way she'd have any significant connection with the incident!
Mr. Wright, your cross-examination please.
Yes, Your Honor.
Witness.
A *** suspect fled the courtroom,
killed a detective in the waiting room,
and then was himself killed.
Is that accurate?
That's what I remember.
Where were you when the suspect tried to escape?
Answer the question. What were you doing?
I was in shock, so I stayed where I was.
Meaning you don't know what happened.
That's right.
OBJECTION!
How could you not know?
What do you mean?
Detective Louis wasn't the only victim found in the waiting room.
There was also someone close to you.
Monica Clyde.
Your sister!
What?!
The witness's sister was also a victim?!
More precisely, a hostage...
OBJECTION!
I've heard nothing about this at all!
That's perfectly understandable.
After all, it wasn't written in the police report.
Someone erased it from the records,
so you've been using fake documents all along.
This is an outrage!
I'm the most influential prosecutor in America!
There's nothing I don't know!
Edgeworth.
The one behind this has even more clout than you.
We all know how much you hate crime.
Someone hid the truth and made it look like the case was solved.
This crime deserves your anger just like any other!
OBJECTION!
Do you have evidence?
Can you prove that the hostage situation was erased from the case records?
Don't state your wild conjectures like they're fact.
You should be held in contempt of court.
I have no physical evidence.
However...
I do have a witness!
What? How so?
Your Honor.
In order to prove that the case records were tampered with,
the defense calls the hostage herself, Monica Clyde, to the stand!
This has nothing to do with my sister!
Your Honor, this trial is supposed to be about Senator Robert's ***!
The only way we'll find out why he was murdered
is if we find out what you're hiding!
The Jack Lyon incident is the key to solving this case!
Fine. If you plan on going that far,
then you are no longer my lawyer!
You're fired.
Leona!
Your Honor, I no longer require an attorney.
On October 22nd, I went to the Governor's parking lot
and murdered Senator Robert Cole.
Leona!
Your Honor, your verdict please!
It's true that a defendant can refuse representation in court.
The defendant's request is in accordance with court regulations.
This is an unprecedented development,
but it seems a trial is no longer needed.
But Your Honor, we still don't know the truth!
If you sentence her now, we'll never get another chance!
Unless the defendant changes her mind, there's nothing we can do.
Leona, listen!
You didn't commit ***!
So why are you trying to get yourself convicted?!
Come on Leona! Wake up already!
I stand by my previous statement.
LEONA!
Court proceedings are now over.
The jury will now review the case.
HOLD IT!
Hold it right there, Your Honor.
Mr. Edgeworth!
The prosecution isn't done yet!
Edgeworth...!
Your judgment just now...
is unacceptable!
Edgeworth! You...!
Defendant.
We're playing by my rules now.
You ignore the truth and keep repeating the same lies.
Did you think you could slip that past me?
Edgeworth!
Looks like I have no choice.
Your Honor!
The prosecution calls a new witness!
You mean...?
Of course!
Monica Clyde!
Bring her into the courtroom!
Mr. Edgeworth!
I'm exercising my legal rights!
You can't—
Save your breath.
Revealing the truth can have tragic results.
But the true tragedy...
is pretending the truth doesn't exist!
As long as I'm on this case, if there's a hidden truth...
I'll reveal it!
Phoenix Wright.
Think you have what it takes to show us
the truth about the Jack Lyon incident?
You know it!
You said to believe in others.
I suppose I'll try believing in you.
Let's do it.
Edgeworth!
I will accept the prosecution's request.
I call Monica Clyde to the witness stand.
Sis!
Witness, please state your name and occupation.
Yes sir.
My name is Monica Clyde.
I'm a doctor.
Two years ago, you had an encounter with the murderer Jack Lyon.
Is that correct?
That's right.
I...
I've tried so hard to forget about that day.
I'm very sorry to ask you this,
but please tell us what happened.
Okay.
Time for a trip to the past.
The final stop on this journey...
will undoubtedly be the truth.
That day, I was waiting for my sis in the waiting room.
I heard someone running in the hall, and then the criminal burst through the door!
He took me hostage!
I...
I was so scared I fainted.
Thank goodness you're alright!
Mr. Wright, you may begin your cross-examination.
Yes, Your Honor.
Witness,
why did you come to the court?
I heard my sis would be observing a trial, so I came to watch too.
But there were no seats left, so I couldn't get in.
I was asked to go to the waiting room.
I see.
Did your sister know about this?
Yes.
We were planning to go eat after the trial ended.
You fainted when the suspect took you hostage...
But do you remember anything that happened before that? Anything at all?
Objection!
She doesn't need to recall more painful memories!
Sis!
I'll be fine.
Monica!
I want you...to go back to the way you used to be!
Nick is fighting for you, too!
So I decided to believe in him!
I can't keep running away from the past forever!
Monica, no! You don't understand what's going on...
Don't say anything—
Defendant!
We are in the middle of a cross-examination.
Don't interrupt again.
Monica!
Defendant, return to your seat.
Witness, can you remember anything?
As I was losing consciousness,
a fight broke out!
Who was fighting?
It was the criminal and a man wearing a suit.
But I can't really remember what happened.
I didn't even see his face...
HOLD IT!
Monica, thank you.
What?
Your Honor, it appears that
there was another person at the crime scene!
The question is, who?
What are you talking about?
It was clearly Detective Louis, who was murdered!
That doesn't work.
If it had been Detective Louis,
he wouldn't have been wearing a suit.
He was on duty at the time!
That's impossible!
The evidence only shows two people!
It can't be...!
Yes it can.
This other person who came to the room
created a fake crime scene!
Unbelievable...!
Does the defendant have anything to say?
Defendant,
it's clear from Monica's testimony
that you were somehow involved in the Jack Lyon incident!
I...
I...!
Sis!
It seems like we should hear the defendant's testimony one more time.
Defendant,
please tell us everything you saw
on the day of the incident!
The killer forced his way past the guard and out of the courtroom.
I reluctantly followed him to the waiting room.
Entering the room, I saw Monica unconscious and two bodies.
Why would she need to lie about Monica being there?
She's still hiding something.
I've got to find out what!
The defense may begin questioning.
Explain in detail what you saw in the waiting room.
Louis was on the ground, bleeding from his head.
He was clearly dead.
He struck his head on the corner of this sofa.
And what of the escaped killer?
He was next to Monica.
Dead, with a double-edged knife in his chest.
OBJECTION!
How did you know the knife was double-edged?
You couldn't see the blade if it was buried in his chest.
This photo makes it clear as day!
All you can see is the handle.
Yet the defendant knew that the knife was double-edged.
How could she know?
Simple. She had seen the blade before the stabbing.
What are you implying?
She murdered the murderer?!
No. She was searched when she entered the courthouse.
She couldn't have gotten a knife past security.
Meaning the crime scene was tampered with.
Tampered with by Leona Clyde...
What made her do that?
No! You've got it wrong!
It was her only option
to cover for another woman at the scene.
Who is this woman?
It's me!
No! Monica was unconscious when the two were fighting!
You would do anything to protect your sister, the real killer.
Even tamper with the crime scene.
Is this your idea of justice?
Incriminating my sister for ***?
Leona...
Think about it.
Is your sister actually capable of committing ***?
Yes...
Can't you believe in your own little sister?
Leona...
Testify honestly about what you saw and did!
The truth may be dead to you,
but I will show you the truth reborn!
And what is your "truth"?
Your lawyer is a runaway train with a one-track mind.
Yet he placed all of his trust in you.
He's pulled out all the stops for you!
Believe in him. You owe him that much.
Do what the old Leona would have.
Believe in him...
Leona...
Monica...
There were definitely three people when I barged into the waiting room.
Monica's scalpel was stuck in the victim's chest.
Considering the circumstances, I had to assume that Monica stabbed the victim.
Though the reason was unclear.
That's when Mr. Miller entered.
He said he would save my sister.
I knew the legal risk of tampering with the crime scene.
Saving Monica was my only concern! I didn't care what happened to me.
Mr. Miller removed the scalpel from the body
and replaced it with a different knife.
The double-edged knife.
That is all we tampered with.
It was... my scalpel?!
The governor fabricated evidence!
This is the scandal of the century!
It's all true.
Following that, I completed a special graduate course at his estate.
Then served as his lawyer until now.
Covering for me cost you everything!
Wright!
What's your take?
Witness, your statement contradicts itself.
I'm telling the truth!
I'm sure you are. But you don't know the whole truth.
You can't see the strings making you dance!
Who's the puppeteer?
The crime scene had been tampered with before you arrived.
-By the man pulling the strings. -Who?
The real criminal.
The man you're protecting.
Governor Miller!
HOLD IT!
Who's supposed to be on trial here?!
Governor Miller! When did you...?
Leona...
Choose your next words very carefully, my dear.
And you, defense attorney!
You've got some nerve pinning the *** on me!
Governor Miller won't take this sitting down!
Don't you have something for the court?
The evidence that proves who did the stabbing!
Defense, is this true?
He knew I took the knife all along.
Not so clever as we thought, are we?
But not a complete dunce, either.
How'd you like the fingerprints on the knife?
What's this about fingerprints?
Explain yourself, Wright!
My my my.
Gather 'round children, I've got a story.
One about the evidence this man took from my home.
Do you admit to having tampered with the crime scene? Sir?
Yes. I won't be made into a murderer for saving someone's life!
Understood. Please give your account of the events.
I was at this courthouse that day.
To watch over Leona's observation.
The criminal fled, and I too bolted from my seat.
Then I heard a scream from the waiting room.
I looked inside to see the criminal and her sister.
As I considered my next move, Detective Louis burst past me into the room.
After the commotion, I looked in to see the sister lying next to two bodies.
I was the initial witness.
The rest is as Leona said.
We tampered with the *** scene together.
I removed the scalpel and replaced it with a different knife.
You were the first to discover the body?
Yes.
Wright! Do you have this scalpel?
You heard the man.
Story time's over. Show us the scalpel I took from the crime scene.
What does the defense say? Present your evidence to the court.
Withholding evidence is a serious offense with heavy penalties.
It all comes down to this piece of evidence.
Just to confirm one thing.
You were the initial witness.
Meaning you were at the crime scene before Leona.
Correct?
I'll admit to that. I was the first to see the two bodies.
You switched another knife with this scalpel.
A butter knife?
The *** weapon!
Complete with one set of fingerprints... Monica's.
That leaves only one person who could be the murderer.
The defendant's own little sister!
I'm a mur... mur...
Why?
Why?!
You finally show your true colors.
You knew she was the murderer and tried to pin it on me!
Good work, boy!
And you call yourself a lawyer!
You never cared about Monica!
I was afraid this would happen.
I just wanted to save Monica! I would do anything for her.
This is my litter sister. She's my only family!
I'm the only one who can look after her!
Do you want to take her from me too?
See what your "truth" does!
But if the killing was accidental,
it would be self-defense! Not ***!
More empty sympathy!
Innocent or not, Monica can never wipe the blood from her hands.
She has to live knowing that she took another's life.
She could have lived blissfully unaware if it wasn't for you!
How cruel...
I was a fool for believing in you!
I...
I...
Tough break, Leona.
One last question, my boy.
How does it feel to have made Leona's precious sister into a murderer?
Let's make one thing clear first.
Suit yourself.
We have one murderer but two bodies.
Who was the real killer?
This scalpel proves who committed the crime.
News flash: Little sister!
Stop the presses!
Someone didn't do their fact-checking.
The *** weapon contradicts itself!
How is the scalpel a contradiction?
Observe closely. A scalpel just wouldn't cut it.
Scalpels are made for medical incisions, not stabbings.
How did it stab the victim?
This calls for a turnabout in thinking.
-A turnabout? -Yes.
Not why it was there, but how it was there.
There's only one way.
Stab it into a pre-existing wound!
Like a hot knife through butter!
You butter believe it. The wound was made by another knife.
And if you pull it out...
No way!
It gets better.
Who could have been there before Leona to perform the stabbing?
Someone who could milk their VIP status to bypass security.
That's a tall order.
You fit the bill!
Mr. Miller! Did you...?
Hang on! Where's the motive?
Why would I go through all that trouble?
Oh, you had plenty good reason!
Power!
Of course!
Leona's parents continue to hold great influence even after their deaths.
You need Leona to ride on her parents' coattails!
She could take you all the way to the White House!
There's your motive!
Governor Miller.
The real criminal...
IS YOU!
You...
YOU MEDDLING LAWYER!
Miller...
Your heart is barren.
You became a politician to protect the weak!
Blinded with fame and fortune,
you lost sight of your original goal.
Until finally...
You took an innocent life
to save your own skin!
And so it was.
Mr. Miller...
Is this true?
It was I.
I killed them both.
And I killed Robert as well.
M-m-m-Mister Governor!
You got me.
The true culprit behind both cases is none other than myself.
There's one more story.
The truth.
The Jack Lyon case...
I heard a scream and ran into the waiting room.
There I saw Monica taken hostage.
I fought with the criminal to rescue her.
That's when I stabbed him with my knife in self-defense.
Detective Louis entered, becoming a witness to my ***.
My mind was reeling. I wanted to undo the crime.
So I killed Louis and made it look like they stabbed each other.
Inspiration struck.
If I did this right, Leona would be in the palm of my hand.
My plan unfolded flawlessly.
Until...
I had an unexpected visitor.
You mean Senator Robert?
Yes.
He came to my room before the press conference
asking to reopen the investigation into his brother's ***.
It's all I've thought about the past two years.
Louis wouldn't have gone out like that.
I'm going to the police
to have them re-investigate the case.
Will you help me?
I could see his determination.
Robert was also a politician.
The police would be willing to reopen the case for him.
I panicked.
And then...
I had Leona dispose of the body for me.
What have you done?!
Leona.
I shouldn't need to tell you this, but it was for your little sister.
Had he uncovered the truth, your sister's *** would've come to light.
This needs to be swept under the rug as well.
That's crazy!
Leona.
You don't want to make your precious sister into a murderer, do you?
I've got a press conference to make.
You're on cleanup duty.
Utterly despicable.
Is that your idea of "a friend of the people"?
I have no excuses.
I became addicted
to the drug called "power."
Leona.
From there, you dragged Robert's body to the parking garage.
Yes.
I could only think about keeping Monica safe.
I obeyed Mr. Miller's every command.
But I was spotted by that photographer.
That's when I decided to shoulder the burden of his sin.
I was at my wit's end.
I positioned myself to make it look like a ***.
The perfect pose for the perfect evidence.
Leona...
Next, I called Mr. Miller and left a message.
"I'll take the blame
if you keep my sister's secret safe forever."
Mr. Miller...
I still can't believe this from you, of all people.
I'm sorry.
Before I knew it, I had strayed from the path of justice
and onto the path of wickedness.
I was praying for the day you would take seat in the Oval Office.
I thought you would be the one to change our country.
It'll be alright.
You've still got these two.
Defense Attorney Phoenix Wright.
Prosecutor Edgeworth.
You have the same eyes that I once did.
You'll give us a future full of hope.
Mr. Miller...
Deep in your eyes I can see
a bright future for our world!
Well then.
The time has come to atone for my sins.
Mr. Miller...
The guilty shall be punished.
But the innocent shall be freed.
Defendant.
You have been found innocent of ***.
Although coerced, you attempted to deceive the court and police.
A trial will be held at a later date to investigate these charges.
Yes...
I understand.
Leona...
What is this beaming smile?
I'd long forgotten
what it feels like to be free.
Leona...
Leona!
This trial has gone on long enough.
Further deliberation is unnecessary.
What say the jury?
Your Honor, we are in agreement.
I will now make my ruling on the *** charges against Leona Clyde.
NOT GUILTY.
Court is adjourned!
Leona!
You're back to your old self!
I never stopped believing.
I knew you'd come back someday!
Monica, I changed after that day at the courthouse.
I had to become the way I did to endure these two years.
I didn't believe in you.
You could have fallen any step along the way. And yet...
Thank you for everything.
Leona...
It's time. Come along now.
Yes.
Leona...
Whadda y'all lookin' mopey for?
Not too shabby!
Ya gave me the shivers!
Ahh! It's that city boy!
Ya can be a man when ya want to!
'Fess up!
Who brought their pet with them?
Me, boss!
The more the merrier, right?
Very good.
Then you can look forward to another pay cut next year.
That's not what I meant!
Everyone get together!
Picture time!
This one's for the scrapbook!
No photography in court.
Get yer yankee butt next to city boy there.
Gimme a "V" for victory!
Get ready!
Double shot time!
What're you to her, anyway?!
We all learned to smile again.
Especially Leona.
Want to buy a newspaper?
I see your image on a distant wave...
You tremble, then vanish.
Your voice, carried on the waves,
fades upon the shore,
erasing the splendor of the past.
Wright.
Edgeworth.
First thing's first.
I should congratulate you.
Thank you.
But I couldn't have done it without your help.
It's hardly worth thanking me.
If anyone should say thank you, it's me.
You awakened within me those once-cherished emotions I had discarded.
I see visions of a distant, nostalgic past.
Edgeworth...
Try talking normal for a change.
I don't do... idle chit-chat.
So what did you come back for?
To deliver a brief congratulatory message.
Congratulatory?
Leona!
Remember, she is a prisoner.
You have five minutes.
I asked the guards to turn a blind eye.
Edgeworth...
I'll be outside.
I've been thinking, ever since we reunited at the detention center...
I want to return to the way things were.
Seeing you fight tooth and nail for someone like me...
it made me remember.
We made a vow to become lawyers.
We wanted to help the weak.
But I ruined our dreams by abandoning myself.
I became weak. I betrayed you.
It pained me to see you, still pure after all these years.
You gave me your all without hesitation.
I felt such grief.
Leona...
You haven't changed either. Not one bit.
Your grief is proof of that.
If you stray from the path, backtrack and start again.
Walk straight ahead, and don't look back!
Oh Nick, I...
I'll be waiting.
For you.
Let's go back to that time.
Let's welcome back our dreams
with open arms!
I want to bring you back!
I believe in you.
Leona...
I'll be waiting.
At the seaside where we used to dream.
We made a vow.
With the waves at our ankles!
I love you...
I love you...
I love you...
I love you...
Under the constellations illuminating the night sky...
our hearts shine as one.
I love you...
I love you...
I love you...
I love you...
The resplendent pearls that paint the sea...
tell tales of our love.
I love you...
I love you...
You're the only one...
whom I love.
Oh shooting star,
I have but one wish...
To love you.
My rules.
I'm the one who decides
my rules.
I'm the one who guides
my rules.
No matter how tragic the outcome...
The flame of my justice...
will reduce all criminals to ash!
When I’m thinking of you,
there’s nothing I fear...
I'll always be by your side
supporting you...
I love you...
I love you...
Under the constellations illuminating the night sky...
our hearts shine as one.
We set off together, hand in hand...
Your reflection illuminating the path before me.
I'll guide you to the future.
I love you...
I love you...
You're the only one
whom I love.
I want to bring you back!
I believe in you.
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
And race towards the future...
to seek the truth.
I’ll open a door to a place beyond the wind…
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
And race towards the future…
and the truth reborn.
Phoenix!
I'll spend...
Phoenix!
this eternal life...
Phoenix!
soaring through...
Phoenix!
the heavens!
February 12th, 2009 Takarazuka Bow Hall
Thank you all.
You know what time it is.
I hope that there are... no objections?
My co-stars,
Leona.
Edgeworth. Please join me.
Follow their lead.
I want to see the crowd get in on this too!
Ready?
One, two...
OBJECTION!
How dashing.
You never get to see them do this kind of thing.
Now it's your turn.
Put out your arm. Don't worry if you bump your neighbor.
Ready?
One, two...
OBJECTION!
Fantastic!
Thank you all for being here today.
