Hello, my name is La Toya Abram-Payton. I have to be a social worker because it is my
calling to do so. In order to dismantle the barrier to human dignity, health and health
as a human right it can only be dismantled if I am a social worker.
I have to be a social worker because I want to be an advocate for someone who does not
have a voice. The client must focus on the barriers to human dignity, there self worth
and strengths. When dealing with issues of inequality, I must assist others focus on
the positive instead of on the negative. In order to have a good rapport with clients
their has to be a foundation of trust in order for character to be built and the problem
to be solved. Once this happens the barriers and obstacles will begin to deteriorate and
the process for change will begin! By doing this we as Social Workers have to
enforce our module 4: Empowering theories and Planned change. This weeks song I provide
was by Stevie Wonder: Living for the City! After reviewing this song; I really enjoyed
his last stanza. It states, “This place is cruel no where could be much colder. If
we could change the world will soon be over. Living just enough, stop giving just enough
for the city!” We as social workers and I, myself have to empower our clients to change
there ways of living for the better. This is done with strategic planning and will power!
Once this is done we (the client and myself) we must reflect on the next steps by putting
a strategic plan in place for change. As states in module 5!
Lastly, I want to leave with you two of my favorite definitions: The Diversity Perspective
(which is my favorite) states that - it is a theoretical framework that emphasizes the
incredible diversity of social workers and their clients. Which merely means that even
though we (the client and myself are different we still can come together and work on change
for the better)! Self awareness- Social workers shall seek to develop an understand of their
own personal and cultural values and beliefs as one way of appreciating the importance
of multicultural identities in the lives of people. Once we as social workers realize
and understand our own personal beliefs and values we will appreciate our clients much
more! Thank you and have a good day! Bye!
