Hi this is Burns Hargis and we're here for another edition of Inside OSU with First Cowgirl Ann Hargis.
We are here at the Sigma Chi house at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
And we're pomping with the Zeta Tau Alphas. [cheering]
OSU homecoming is as big as it gets. We're doing some pomping here, or at least I'm thinking about it.
Every year tens of thousands of OSU alums and fans come back to OSU for homecoming.
And one of the great things is the walkaround on Friday night where all these throngs of people go around and look at these
incredibly elaborate house decorations that the fraternities and sororities have put together.
That's what we're working on right now. This is called pomping. Ann, explain pomping.
Well I'm a master pomper now after having done this for two minutes. You take your tissue, wrap it around the pencil and
stick it in the chicken wire, which has glue on it, and voila you're an artist.
Ok well we've got two people who really know what they're talking about.
I'm Andie Allen. I'm the Zeta director for homecoming. And I picked Andie because she has red hair. How about you?
My name's Luke Murphy. I'm the Sigma Chi director this year.
Who designs all this? How do you get started?
We start back in January with meetings with fraternities and we pair with a house. We start designing and putting pictures
that we want on the dec in March. Then we start doing all of this the beginning of this school year.
This particular display is going to have a very interesting power source isn't' it? Yes sir. Tell us about it.
This year's dec will run off all renewable energy. We're going to have a wind turbine and 3 solar panels that run the dec.
I'm curious about how many hours are involved? The girls have to pomp 100 hours for the entire set of pomping hours.
Do you stick to your bed from the glue on your fingers? Yes. All night pomp it gets flung everywhere.
Does everybody in the sorority and fraternity take part in this?
The girls help with pomping. The directors do all the designing and turning things in and getting things organized.
Then the girls and the boys do the pomping. Some of the boys do the welding too.
Well we've got to go back to work here because Friday's coming fast and we've got to get this up.
I want to thank the Zeta Tau Alphas and the Sigma Chis.
I don't want to scare you with the numbers but we really do expect 80,000 people or more to be at walkaround on Friday.
Then we have the Sea of Orange parade with an exciting marshal. Desmond Mason, who was a fantastic basketball player
here at OSU and his wife Andrea was a great soccer player. And then we take on those Baylor Bears on Saturday afternoon.
The #3 Cowboys from OSU. So come root them on.
