>> UMUC was founded in 1947 to help educate those
in the post World War II workforce looking for a better future.
Our success in communities and military bases throughout Maryland
and D.C. soon led us to expand overseas.
In 1949, a group of adventurous faculty flew to Germany on a moment's notice.
Their mission was to establish college classes for GIs in the field.
UMUC was proud to be the first U.S. university to do so for the U.S. military overseas.
Over the past 6 decades, our relationship with the U.S. military has grown and strengthened.
We've gone where the military has needed us even into war zones in Europe and Asia.
UMUC is still onsite with boots on the ground in more than 150 locations
in 25 countries and territories worldwide.
Today more than 55,000 military affiliated students attend UMUC.
We're proud of our military heritage and are committed to this service,
the University of Maryland University College.
