Hi! My name is Dan and I’m here with Expert Village. Right now we’re going to talk about
a few kinds of woods to use and not use when having a campfire. Pine and spruce are good
woods for burning. They don’t burn very hot but they burn easily, but they tend to
have a lot of knots and will split and throw sparks. You want to be very careful and monitor
your fire if you’re burning with these woods. Ash, beach, and maple are good hard woods
for burning, as they burn very hot and very clean; they don’t put off much smoke. There’s
a few woods you want to be careful of, mainly: poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
As coming in contact, either physically touching the wood or in contact with the smoke will
cause you to break out in a very unpleasant rash. If you inhale the smoke, this will usually
result in intense respiratory ailments and will involve you going to the hospital. Another
thing you want to think of is if you’re in an area you’re new to, is checking out
if there’s any endangered species in the area, as you don’t want to cut and burn
those for legal reasons and also to preserve the natural beauty. These are a few of the
things you want to think about when building your fire.
