Outside a gallery... a large dog beckons people.
At first, many think the statue is made of trash bags.
But... it's bronze.
Then come the questions: who made it? and why?
Located downtown Seoul, Plateau is famous for its permanent display of Auguste Rodin's
masterpieces: The Burghers of Calais and... The Gates of Hell.
Just like the bronze dog outside, artworks inside the gallery raises questions... questions
posed by artist Gim Hong-sok.
Contrary to their humble appearance, Gim's works incorporate expensive materials such
as resin, bronze, and stainless steel.
When a piece involves contribution of others, physical or intellectual...
...is it fair to credit only the artist who came up with the initial idea?
What about works that seem worthless, but are made of costly materials?
These are ethical dilemmas addressed by Gim regarding artists
and artworks.
In "Good Critique Bad Critique Strange Critique," Gim exemplifies the consensus between artists
and others.
Through his latest exhibit, Gim asks "What is the
code ethics for artists?"
While openly acknowledging contribution from others, all works bear his name and his name
only.
Consequently, they become valuable works
of art.
