Hi! I’m Candi Cane-Canncel for expertvillage.com. This topic is basic stitching. So we’ve
learned how to sew a straight line, now we’re going to be learning what different stitch
lengths you want to use for different fabrics. Most machines are going to have a little dial
that you can just turn from 2 from 1 to 2 to 3 all the way up to 5 and this just means
the width, the smaller the number the smaller your stitch is going to be. For something
that’s very fine say like a nice silk or something like that along those lengths you’re
definitely going to want to go with a small stitch length like a 2 or maybe a 2 ½. For
a fabric like this like a woven fabric you can get away with like 3, if you’re going
to be basting which is another topic we’ll learn you can go with a 4 or a 5. So when
you’re going to sew you have this little guide right here that shows different seam
line that says 1 ½, that means your seam allowance is going to be a ½ of an inch.
Most commercial patterns are 5/8 of an inch so that’s just one step up from ½ of an
inch. So all you’re going to be doing is just sticking up your presser foot, putting
your fabric in and pulling it down, adjusting your stitch length accordingly and start sewing…and
that’s all there really is to it. For more info on this topic feel free to go to my website
