bjbj I would like you think about this: karma is not only the physical deeds, but even the
mind. That includes trying to be mean, trying to hurt people, not being so kind, under the
pretext of anything. We do it under the pretext of protecting ourselves or of anything. The
desire to hurt people because of anger or hatred, already creates negative karma. Karma
does not have to be thoughts followed by actions and results. But when motivation, action and
conclusion are complete, that becomes a very strong, powerful karma. When one element is
missing, it is still karma, but not that powerful. Our actions of the physical body, verbal sounds
and mental thoughts all create karma. That s why love and compassion are so great for
us and other people. They create their karma. Hatred is so bad, because it creates its karma.
My hatred s result is mine and mine alone. Your hatred s result will be yours and yours
alone. Besides that there is something called common karma . That has been functioning lately very vividly.
Sometimes when I talk about karma from whatever little I know, it becomes a problem for me.
9-11 happened and then all these natural disasters happened and are happening everywhere. When
you look at that from the karmic point of view this is definitely due to karmic consequences.
No question. When you begin to say that it may sometimes look like victim-bashing. Suppose
I say today that the consequences of the earth quake and tsunami in Japan are karmic consequences.
They are the karma of the people who lost their lives, the karma of the families who
lost loved ones and the karma of all of us in the world who witnessed this terrible tragedy.
On top of that the threat of nuclear consequences is all our common karma. Do not forget that.
It is not only them, it is all of us. It is the same thing that is happening in Libya,
what happened in Iraq, what is happening in Afghanistan. If you zoom in to karma it is
very difficult and so subtle. Even Buddha put up his hands and said, No one can really
tell, unless they have total knowledge and even then. It is more difficult to understand
karma compared to understanding the profound wisdom. Yet, karma is not without rules. Sometimes
people think, Buddhists don have a monotheistic God, but they have karma. They may think that
karma is replacing God. But no, karma has its own rules and regulations. It is really something very
funny. It looks like karma has all the power in the world to control us; however it has
its own rules and regulations and criteria. It is not so simple that anything karma wishes
to happen will happen. It is not karma who is granting us positive and negative deeds.
It is not karma that is punishing us with negative consequences. It is our own deeds,
our own thoughts. The funniest thing is this: Who made them? I did. Each and every one of
us has. Whatever we enjoy in life, every peace and comfort we have in the United States,
we made it. It is our own deeds. We don t have to thank Obama for it. I am joking. Nor
do we have to blame Bush. It is our deeds. Similarly, all things are due to our deeds.
We are the ones who made it. Individually, our physical, mental and emotional difficulties,
are our own responsibility, as much as we want to blame others. I am a brutal diabetic
and I can t blame anybody else except myself. I have been chewing candies non-stop when
I was a kid. When I was asleep my blanket got stuck to my check with the sugar of candies.
In the morning they had to pull it off. Even afterwards, in the 1980s I used to eat Amy
Joy s donuts, 24 of them in one go. Can you believe it? Looking back I regret all this,
but it s done already. The consequences are already on my physical condition. The symptoms
are showing up right and left. That s my deeds. It is not the fault of Amy Joy s donuts. It
is not the fault of my companions who had them with me. It is my own fault and I have
to recognize that. I am telling you that so that some of you may even be able to prevent
to make the same mistake. But most of you are great. You don t want to eat sugar at
all. However, there is good qualities in sugar too. You don t know what you are missing (laughter
all around). It has also a lot of energy too. This is the karma. It has rules and regulations.
