Today we have Diane Mohler with us to discuss personal learning strategies, or how our brains
like to learn, so welcome. Thank you Hunter.
Everybody learns differently
some people like to read, others like to write or create flashcards
while others feel that information makes sense while they're in lecture
so lets talk about why that is.
Just as well all prefer different types of foods or spices
we all have different ways and unique ways of making connections with material.
So, depending on what works best for you as a learner, we can tailor our learning
processes based on our personal strengths.
so how can we learn more about our personal strengths
well, at our website we have short assessments that students can come and take that
that focus on personal
sensory preference, personal styles, and strengths. It's a way for
students to begin to learn more about
how they learn best.
Let's talk more about sensory preference.
What does this mean exactly? Okay. Simply put, sensory preference is the way we prefer
to take information in
we all take information in when we listen, and see it, touch it, and
experience it
um... it just depends upon what we prefer. Kinesthetic learners for example,
prefer having hands on experiences, labs, working with others.
It's the way that they can make information stick better.
And, I like to see how something works, so I guess I'm a visual learner?
Right. A visual learner.
they like to see videos, power points,
reading graphs and charts.
So if students know what works best for them,
as far as making connections and understanding new information
this would be very helpful
if you're taking in
larger amounts of information
Right. And, that's what is so important now in college
students really do have the responsibility now of learning, they
take a lot more of that responsibility, and so understanding what they can do
based on their strengths and styles to make that process happen for them and
to retain more information, is what it's really all about.
This is great information, and certainly useful
What do you suggest students do?
Okay, well once they come to our website and take the assessment,
there's a lot of information that will help them to see what they can do
specifically based on their style. So, looking at that information to see
what can i do to take information in better how can I process it better, and
how can I improve on my exams?
thanks so much for coming in
