So I got a hold of the Sony HDR AS15 action cam It seems like a good little camera to
use on multirotor helicopters. let’s open it up and see what we got!
So first comes the camera itself it seems tiny ... shapewise it’s more in the configuration
of the contour cameras than the GoPro.
Next we find a USB cable. And the waterproof or impact resistant housing.
Comes with two camera mounts, they’re very similar to the GoPro system. The yellow sled
is mounted to the camera housing and slides into docks that can be stuck anywhere.
I won’t be using the camera mounts the because camera housing has a quarter twenty mount
to directly connect it to my camera gimbal.
the Camera slides into the housing which keeps it nice and secure. And
then we just bolt it down to the Gimbal.
It’s all mounted up so let’s go see how it does in air!
onboard footage looks good, the color is right on with nice saturation, automatic exposure
seems very good at handling the wide exposure latitude present at the horizon of most multirotor
video. And best of all very little Jello Effect, This footage was shot with the camera image
stabilization turned off.
The external lens of the housing gave about the same lens flare issues and stobing from
the propellers that the GoPro housing gives. and none of the wide angle distortion of the
GoPro.
The Sony Action Cam is a nice little sports camera... It flies well, Shoots nice 1080P
video, and has a timelapse feature for shooting a series of stills in the air. I’m looking
forward to using the IOS viewfinder app and the slomo features.
