hello everybody it is David
Claussen with English - quickly.com
and today we are going to learn
about the country of Ukraine
because of the protests and the
fighting that's going on between the
civilians and the government there
and the Ukraine is in the European
continent next to Poland, Bulgaria, Romania
Moldova Turkey and of course Russia right here
the official language is Ukrainian
but there are about 17% of Russians that live there and about 29%
of Ukrainians say Russian
is the language that they
speak
in history you might say that the Ukraine started in 882 A.D.
and from that time it had a lot of
independent or smaller little countries or city states
in the 20th century it was dominated by the
Soviet
union
and it really got its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991
44,000,000 people live in the Ukraine
and the currency or the money is the Ukrainian
hryvnia I don't know if I'm pronouncing that correctly and the demonstrations began on November
21st 2013 after the Ukrainian government did not
sign a free trade agreement with the European Union
so if you look here at the causes or what makes the problem or what happens
and you can see first that the Ukrainian government didn't go with the European Union and people were tired of
the Russian foreign policy that the Russians
had too much influence on
the Ukraine
they're also worried about government corruption
and corruption
means a crime or dishonesty or doing fraudulent or bad things you take money
when you shouldn't
and the goals or what the
protesters want
is they want the impeachment of
their president victor Yanukovych
and that's him right there
Viktor Yanukovych, I think I'm pronouncing that correctly
and he's been in office since 2010
and from the latest headlines
as many as 100 killed in the New Ukraine clashes
so hundreds of people have died
and most of the protests are in the capital of Kiev
and this gives you a little idea
of some of the pictures and sites from the beautiful capital of Kiev
so let's hope for peace
and all the best for the country of Ukraine and that the political problems
work out
so that's our lesson for today it is a lot in the news with the Ukraine
