In this experiment I will attempt to melt crayons using a hot glue gun.
The questions I will answer are: * Is it possible?
* Is it practical? * Is it safe?
The tools for this experiment consist of: * a hot glue gun and a glue stick
* a hot glue gun and some old crayons with the paper removed
* some items to glue together: in this case, an old toilet paper roll and some used matchsticks
The first problem I encountered was crayon size.
* the glue stick fit perfectly * but the crayon was too big for the glue
gun and had to be trimmed down
The second problem was the flow of meted crayon. * The glue stick moved through the glue gun
and onto the matchstick without difficulty * The crayon flowed out the back of the glue
gun
The third problem was control * The melted crayon would not flow out the
nozzle on the front, regardless of how the glue gun was held.
* The glue gun with the crayon had to be turned upside down and emptied of all melted crayon.
* A matchstick was used to clear un-melted crayon from the back, which made it possible
to empty out the remaining melted crayon. * This made quite the mess
To clean up the glue gun using a crayon, a glue stick was inserted and pushed through
until it ran clear. A small amount of glue was changed to a nice
purple color, but it was not enough to use in a craft project.
In conclusion, the hot glue crayon experiment produced the following results:
* It is possible * It is not practical due to the messy and
uncontrollable flow of melted crayon * It is not safe due to the possibility of
burns resulting from contact with melted crayon
Therefore, using a hot glue gun to melt crayons is not recommended
