Im Francisco Alvarado reporting live from Miami, Florida where I'm on an exploratory mission to findto find out if BHOis really marijuana's final frontier. BHO is a marijuana concentrate that contains bombastic levels of THC, the main ingredient that gets you ***, baked, medicated, or whatever it is you call getting high. BHO has been around for decades, but has only been gaining popularity in the last two or three years. To find out why BHO is getting so popular I met up with James, a cannabis connoisseur hwo gave up weed for oil. It's the crack of pot. once you smoke this, pot doesn't really do much to you. You keep wanting to smoke this because this got you as high as you did the first time you smoked pot. I've been able to breathe better since I stopped smoking pot and started smoking only BHO. I go through about a gram to a half a gram in a day. That's approximately 17 to 18 joint; an incredible number of joints to smoke in a day. I met up with a dabber here who showed me the latest in vapor pen technology. Basically you got sour diesel, afghoo, and cherry pie. You grab one of these, then a battery that you can get at your local corner store, or even at all different kinds of places. You attach it, and you inhale it. You can hear it. This *** hits great. The good thing about this is that you can't smell it after like two seconds, and then you could be ina restaurant. Somewhere. Anywhere. Just pop a vial in and start smoking. I was surprised to find that the number one vapor pen maker in the country as rated by High Times magazine is based in Davie, Florida not too far from here in Miami. The vaporizers they make, that are popular with the waxy oil community. We can't really make any references to illegal substance because in the state of Florida it's against the law for anyone to knowingly sell paraphernalia to anybody. Hey what's up man. I'm at mile marker, here, the one you told me. I'm almost close. I'm gonna get off on US1 and take that down to the Florida Keys where I'm gonna hook up with a glass blower that James introduced me to. Aright, my name is Henry Katz. I live in Key Largo, Florida. Been livin down here all my life. I'm a glass blower. I try to make heady things, but I don't try and charge an arm and a leg for them. So everyone can enjoy my glass; not just a certain group. You know, when you smoke out of your piece you form a bond with it. It's more of a spiritual thing, I feel. I have no doubts people were making BHO twenty or thirty years ago, but today's techniques and today's final product is way better than anything they were making back then. I set out to find some back yard chefs. These are people who make their own BHO and sometimes sell it. When I used to smoke flowers I used to smoke a joint in the morning before leaving the house, maybe one or two throughout the day, maybe even three. I extract my own because I want to know what kind of product went into my wax, where it came from. And I wanna know the quality. And I wanna make sure that it was done properly. Right now he's working with about 60 grams of kind California bud. He's hoping to get at least 6 grams of wax out of this batch. He starts off by stuffing marijuana trimmings into an aluminum tube. The butane is a solvent stripping the marijuana plant of its tiny hairlike trichomes, which contain the highest levels of THC. It turns into a liquid that passes through a coffee filter onto a pyrex dish that's sitting on a hot plate. The butane takes about ten minutes to evaporate. (music) And all that's left is an oily residue. The chef scrapes the sticky substance off the pyrex, onto a piece of wax paper which he then puts into a mason jar that's rigged to a vacuum pump. This will purge the remaining butane and bam! You've got wax. BHO comes in several varieties with names like shatter, butter, and honeycomb. What you're doing when you actually heat it up to try to get the butane out is you get a lot of the butane out, but, the butane starts to mold with that, and that's why you get the crumble and the butter. Yknow what I'm sayin? Now the best way is just to make it into *** shatter cause that *** is literally 100% butane free. It's always gonna be clear if it's made right you're not gonna see a single little bubble in there, and most of the time, depending on the strain you'll be able to literally handle it with your hand. You can crack it, you can do whatever. And that's how you know there's not a single drop of butane in there. However some marijuana industry experts say backyard chefs are hurting the legalization movement. Ry Prichard, a cannabis reviewer and the owner of TCLabs says leave it to the professionals. For people extracting at home and stuff like that I just emphasize don't do it. There's so many variables. There's so much risk in a solvent extraction process. People don't know the properties of butane. They don't know how it works. They don't know how explosive it can be. Butane is a highly flammable gas and it will blow your *** up. I drove from Miami to St Petersburg, where two dudes trying to make BHO blew themselves up. They suffered major burns and destroyed their apartment. They were also charged with manufacturing a controlled substance. Their neighbor Justin Washington remembered clearly what happened that night. Justin Washington. Can you tell me what happened here about a month ago? Uhm, I heard a big explosion. Boom. When the fire trucks came, and the police came did you find out what happened? Nah, I didn't want to. You want me to tell you what happened? Can you tell me what happened? Okay. Your neighbors were making butane hash oil. Yeah? DEA spokeswoman Amy Roderick says it's a drug trend that has law enforcement officials on high alert. It's considered much like a methamphetamine lab. It's considered manufacturing, because they're using chemicals to manufacture. And it's charged in state court, as well as federal court. Seventy five percent of all the marijuana warrants that we do, they're extracting hash oil. And not even all weed smokers agree that wax is the greatest thing on Earth. It gets me too *** high and I dont like being that *** high where I can't *** think. If that's how you wanna get high, do it, do it good, and enjoy it, but I can't see anybody doin it that doesn't enjoy it. At least one psychologist says that for some people it might be a good thing. Weed has medicinal effects. Significant medicinal effects. I mean, I have people in my practice right now that smoke weed to lessen anxiety, to improve their appetite, to mitigate symptoms of attention deficit disorder. You know, one hit or two hits or something like that and they're good. Doing, making, and selling BHO will still land you in prison in most states. North on the Florida coast line, to Palm Beach County, where I'm about to meet the real deal. The man who served thirty years in prison on a marijuana trafficking charge. Almost all of the medical marijuana strains that are grown started from the Colombian gold that I brought in. We're actually on a boat, 90 miles away from the shore, where it's completely legal, so I'm kinda cool right now doin this on camera, cause I know it's not illegal in international waters. And here we go, this is a little bit of the honey oil. Hahahahahaha. Hahahahahaa. Oh man. My final conclusion is that wax got me higher than anything else on Earth, but it's no more dangerous than smoking a joint. So why don't you come with me and let's dab today.
