A lot has changed since the early days of psychology, including the way we conduct research.
Many resources are now available online. To access some of the research resources needed
for your Physiological Psychology course, start by visiting the University of Maine
at Machias homepage. Navigate to the link for the Library located in the top navigation
menu on the right. Then select Find Articles by Database Subject.
Go to to the Psychology section, near the bottom of the page, where you can find two
suggested databases for this course. Both PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO will provide you
with access to peer-reviewed articles, which are required for your research.
You should also consider using CINAHL with Full Text as a another helpful database. It
is located under Public Health.
If you are off campus, you may be prompted to enter your maine.edu username and password.
This is the same username and password you use to access the portal, MaineStreet, and
your student email.
Since all three databases use the same interface, let's explore PsycARTICLES. You can apply
these same steps to PsychINFO and CINAHL with Full Text.
From the main search page, enter your search term(s). We can use "autism and modeling"
as an example.
This next part is important! Before hitting the search button, limit your results to Full
Text articles that have been published in the last five years. You will also want to
make sure that you only see Peer Reviewed articles. These are the requirements put forth
by your instructor.
From the search results page you can further refine your search. For example, I am NOT
interested in seeing articles about video modeling, so I will ask the database to remove
articles including the word "video".
By clicking on an article, you can review the abstract or summary of an article to make
sure it's a good fit for your research. You can also use the citation feature on the page
to copy and paste a citation for use in the references section of your assignment. The
email option is another helpful tool that allows you to send the article to your inbox.
You should always save articles that you find helpful to your computer. Never rely on bookmarking
articles or permalinks, as the links for these articles can quickly change.
