Everything you say and do online is there for other people to see, for other people
to get to know who you are. Therefore, you need to be very careful about what you put
online. If you're in a bad mood or something has really got you upset, stay away. Don't
go online and post something that you might regret later. Or if you have absolutely have
to, do something in draft mode, and then go back and take a look at it later. Here are
five tips to help you protect yourself online.
You need to focus. You need to focus on one particular topic or one particular area in
your business that you want to be known for. I have seen lots of people out there who are
involved in ten, fifteen, twenty different things. My automatic response is oh my, they
must be a scatter brain. Focus. Develop a reputation for a specific area, a specific
business. You can move on a develop other areas later.
Watch what's happening in your industry. You'll be able to see the trends, where things are
going, what is happening, who to believe, and who not to believe. All of the different
things that are going on your industry, what's the new technology that applies to your business,
what's the new news that's happening, maybe a new procedure, a new program. Watch what's
actually happening in your industry so that you, yourself, are also going to stay current.
You want to be seen as the expert in your area.
You need to be clear in what you're talking about and you need to be truthful. Nothing
will damage your reputation more than being caught in a lie. So just don't do it. Be clear
about what you're doing -- Example: I'm doing this particular piece to give things away
to people in order to give, but this piece over here is for sale, and I am expecting
money for this particular product or service. So be clear and be truthful.
Be you. Attempting to be just like someone else or to do things the same way as someone
else when they're not truly who you are shows through. You can come across as fake. You
can come across as someone not to be believed. You definitely want just to be you. It pays
off in the end.
Provide value. Your reputation is built on what you say and do. And when you provide
excellent value, you are saying excellent things and you are doing excellent things.
Providing value is critical. Make sure that you do your research on what you put out there,
use tested procedures. One of the things that I do before I will re-tweet anyone, especially,
definitely if it's a link, I will go through and see what's on the other side of that link.
And if it's not something that I personally believe in or that's going to add value to
my followers on Twitter, I won't re-tweet it. So be sure that you are providing value
in all areas.
