Hi my name is Dr. Kim Makoi and I am a holistic chiropractor and certified addictionologist
in San Francisco, California and this is how to live with a drug addict. It is definitely
not easy to live with a drug addict and the first thing you need to do if you are living
with one is to educate yourself on addiction and about codependency because every addict
has a codependent and if you are living with one and you don't know who the codependent
is it is probably you. So educating yourself is the first step and becoming aware of not
enabling the addict as much as possible. That means not giving them money and not buying
alcohol or drugs for them of course and as much as possible trying to monitor their diets
especially with things like sugar and simple carbs, those things often will trigger and
increase addictive behavior. A lot of the addicts, a lot of, in recovery a lot of the
addicts are told some of the things to stay clean are to make sure that you don't get
hungry, lonely or bored so keeping the addict engaged, making sure their blood sugar stays
level, those will go a long way to helping. But educating yourself is definitely number
one, making sure the addict is not only in some kind of therapy but also yourself because
you can't be much of a support system if you don't even know what that means and that is
how to live with a drug addict.
