My name is Kayla Dixon, I am a geotechnical engineer.
That means I am a soils engineer.
We do soils designs for foundations, embankments, slope stability, highway design, road design, parking lots -- that type of thing.
My day would generally be split between report writing, proposal writing, looking at some lab results, doing some design and project management.
I would say probably about 25% of my time would be design and probably about 50% would be other office work - proposals/report writing –
and generally I might be out of the office about 10-20% depending on the week /the day.
Today we’re going out to visit the drilling crew on-site to get some samples, and we’ll be taking those back to the lab.
I’ll be looking at those and using them in our design for the pavement.
We’re out on the highway now and we’re taking some samples of the payment structure behind me here.
Different soils types have different properties and those properties will affect how thick your pavement structure has to be. That’s mostly what I’m worried about.
But I’m also looking at embankment height. It can involve slope stability failures if the embankments get too high and your soils are too soft.
I’m going to take a look at some samples that we brought back from the field today and decide on a lab program for them.
A lot of people think that engineers build things and they’re out on site a lot and that’s really not necessarily the case.
In general the environment engineers are mostly in the office.
Another thing that engineers often think is, I just need to know my sciences and my maths.
You do a lot of report writing and a lot proposal writing so, contrary to popular belief, you actually have to be able to write well and communicate well.
Entry level pay would depend what part of the province you’re in, probably what part of the country you’re in as well.
You’d be would be between 30-45 thousand dollars a year.
As far as a geotechnical engineer goes, you generally need an applied science degree.
You can get a bachelor of engineering degree from a university, or you can get a college diploma as a civil engineering technician.
I didn’t go into civil engineering thinking I wanted to be a geotechnical engineer.
I went into civil engineering thinking I’ve got lots of options and this was the opportunity that came up first, and I’ve enjoyed till now, so I haven’t changed.
