María Antonieta Monterreal plays the part of "Pilar Guerra".
Part One
In northern Spain, on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea, lies the picturesque town of Aráceli.
Pilar Guerra, the young schoolmistress. MARÍA ANTONIETA MONTERREAL
Ramona, an old maid who had been Pilar´s mother since the latter was orphaned. (Señora COMENDADOR)
"What most exasperates me is having to be serious for so long. The urge I have to play with them!
"The holidays are starting soon and I dare say you'll be able to have fun ... unless your boyfriend comes and upsets you."
"I'll say no more, but my heart tells me that your boyfriend doesn't love you as much as God would have him."
Luciano, a sculptor with a great future, is Pilar´s boyfriend, and loves her with all the force you would expect of his first love.
Luciano. JUAN DE ORDUÑA (BOY)
Return from the catch.
Don Javier (MODESTO RIBAS), a rich fisherman, mayor of Araceli and father of Lucian.
Proud of his son, he dreams of a prosperous wedding for him,
when the opportunity arises.
I've noticed you acting a little strangely these last few days. What's wrong?
"You already know. I want you to leave this town
and come to Madrid so that we're not separated.
I'll ease your task of finding work in a school
until we get married."
"No Luciano; they'll soon start whispering about me. If you loved me as much as I love you, you wouldn't make me such a proposal."
"Who does that little schoolmistress think she is? I'll put a stop to this!"
"I don't want anything ... Leave me alone!"
Margot, a lady from Madrid who, at Luciano's recommendation,
is spending the summer in Aráceli. (MARÍA LUISA ACEÑA)
Pilar was thinking back to the first days after her arrival in that town, where at first they whispered about her open personality.
Luciano had arrived from Madrid to spend the summer with his parents.
From that day onwards, Luciano never missed a chance to win over her love ...
... until Pilar loved him with all the strength of her soul.
"I can see that what you took for a summer distraction is becoming a bit serious ...
because you're really falling in love."
"But not enough to do something as foolish as get married now. My father wouldn´t agree to that either."
Felipe (SANTIAGO BARAT), a noble lad, a teacher at a children´s school,
wants nothing more than what's good for Pilar, whom he secretly adores.
"It's a strange love that takes pleasure in making you suffer ...
Believe me, Luciano's intentions are not good."
"What right do you have to meddle in my affairs?
Luciano has never thought about what you're supposing!"
Don Javier arrived home in a rage.
Doña Elvira, Don Javier's wife. (played by Señora PALMA)
"From what I saw, that *** is set on catching Luciano in her net,
and that's intolerable."
I'd prefer my son to have Pilar for a wife, a good and honourable girl,
to all the marquesses that you've lined up for him.
Remember that when we got married, we only had a poor fishing boat."
"Well I'm willing to do anything for this to stop, even throw her out of town".
A short lost scene: Pilar feeds her hens in her garden.
On the following day, one which Pilar had been looking forward to, as it was the first of the holidays...
"I´ll keep it brief, Miss. It's essential that the relationship between you and my son ends immediately. Is that clear?
"Yes, Sir. What isn't clear is why you didn't tell your son all this instead of telling me. Did I somehow declare my love to him"?
"Miss, you must understand that it's madness aspiring to my son's wife. I spoke to him last night and, at my insistence, he's going away on a long journey".
"But as he'll have to return home some day, I need you to give me your word that this relationship is over".
"No! I love your son too much to betray him like that! And now, if you'll excuse me, I can't listen to you for a minute more.
"Are you throwing me out of my house"?
"While I'm in it, it's mine".
That afternoon.
"Is it true that you're going off on a long journey"?
"I've no other choice. But you can show me how much you care by coming with me. You know that we'll get married as soon as I can convince my father".
"Come and look for me then. My love for you will always be the same".
One day...
"Is Luciano going"?
"He's gone".
"Don't suffer, Pilar. Luciano doesn't love you honourably... as I love you".
"You love me too? I thought I had a friend in you and you turn out to be just another enemy!... Go away, go, I don't want to see you..."
End of Part One
Part Two
The following day, Felipe moved to Iznadi, where his mother was a teacher.
The day after that, a letter from Ramona for Felipe reached Iznadi:
Life's too short to translate this ***.
"Mother!", Felipe pleads, "Come with me to her side! I'm asking you on my knees!"
And, at her son's supplication, doña Mónica got ready to depart at once, and, taking the first train, they arrived in Aráceli.
And there they convince Pilar to accompany them to Iznadi, remaining with them until the time comes to move to her new destination.
Departure day. Doña Mónica didn't have the courage to go to the station.
Pilar, if you ever need someone to give his life for you, remember me.
And the train departed, carrying Pilar Guerra with it. But the girl could not secure her new school. On the day of her arrival in Madrid, Ramona fell ill and remained bedridden.
To meet the costs of treatment for the illness, Pilar had to pawn some earrings that had belonged to her mother
Pilar requested a stay of execution before her move to Balganina. And when Ramona could get up, the stay had expired.
She looked for a school in which to ply her trade, but in vain.
García had gone out that day in a very optimistic mood...
After losing her destiny, Pilar had no way to earn a living. One after another, her meagre ítems of jewellery disappeared into the pawn shops,
until one morning, she thought she saw her salvation in a newspaper advertisement.
WANTED: A YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL WOMAN TO MODEL FOR A SCULPTOR.
IT IS AN ESSENTIAL PRECONDITION THAT SHE HAS NEVER WORKED IN THIS CAPACITY.
EXCELLENT PAY.
And that very afternoon Pilar turned up at Ángel Roberto's studio.
The great sculptor received her with the greatest kindness and was enchanted by the young woman's appearance.
"My desire", he explained, "is to make a statue representing shame. It will feature a young woman, dressed in a tunic which the wind rends. Her back is bare, down to the waist, as well as her leg.
Upon hearing what was involved, Pilar was furious, and left the sculptor's house.
But the days went by and the time came to pay for her lodgings, and necessity drove the girl back to Ángel Roberto's studio.
End of Part Two
Part Three
The first session was not a long one: Ángel Roberto sacrificed his inspiration in the face of the martyrdom that the young woman was undergoing.
Cupid, with perfect aim, had pierced the master's heart.
While this was going on, Luciano, coming to the end of his journey, was getting the train at Bilbao to return to Madrid.
Ángel Roberto went, almost every night, to Margot's house, where a gathering of artists got together.
Luciano's first visit was to Margot's tertulia, of which he was a devoted attendee.
Ángel Roberto's work advanced very quickly. Within a few days, he was finished, barring a few small details.
"How beautiful you are, Pilar"!
And by the time he had withdrawn from the studio, he had understood the love that the object represented.
"This is a lot!...There's too great a difference between what you're all used to paying and how much I want".
"What do you know about that?... Do you know another sculptor"?
"Your pupil, Luciano, was my boyfriend"!
"Then are you the schoolteacher from Araceli"?
"Your conduct with me compels me to tell you about my life".
Meanwhile...
Pilar had briefly explained the different stages through which her life had passed.
"Now you know everything, and since you've been good to me since the very first day... continue to be so until the end".
"Pilar... I find myself so captivated by your being that my desire, my years...
aren't enough to keep my thoughts under control.
Luciano doesn't deserve your love:
he was only ever trying to satisfy a whim".
"Are you not, by any chance, doing the same thing"?
"I swear to you, Pilar, that if it weren't for my daughter..."
At the Puerta del Sol, Pilar bumped into Margot.
"At six o'clock tomorrow I'll be waiting for you in my house. I want to know everything that's happened to you".
That night.
Master, when are you going to unveil what you've been keeping so secret in your studio?
"Pilar's in Madrid".
"She's coming here at six o'clock tomorrow: that's all you need to know".
The following day.
That night, Pilar mourned the loss of her honour...
Pilar, I ask you to forgive me for my actions, of which I am ashamed.
I swear my love is true and my only wish is to make up for my mistake.
I need to talk to you. Write back. Luciano
"I have to destroy his life like he's ruined mine."
End of Part Three
Part Four
A month has passed.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the big announcement: the Friends of the Fine Arts Society is opening a contest for Spanish sculptors
to pay tribute to woman, erecting a monument to her beauty...
What an excuse to let your imagination run wild!"
"If the master doesn't show, Luciano's certain to take home the prize."
I wouldn't bet on Luciano: at the moment, he's in the middle of his honeymoon with the schoolmistress.
Sure enough, Angel Roberto could confirm the rumours that were circulating about Pilar.
"Why did you say hello to my teacher?"
"I don't know...I must have confused him with someone else... Don't distract me now."
"Let's go home: I don't feel well."
Luciano had set Pilar up in a luxurious house in Madrid's Salamanca district.
"It's nothing, you don't need to stay. I'll feel better after some bed-rest."
"I've lost the last of my shame by appearing in public with my lover.
Whoever said it, Ramona... Your good girl is dead, I'm bringing her here, ...
But Pilar's revenge had begun: the considerable expenses that she cost her boyfriend
would bring about his ruin and that of his house.
"Tell that man that I'll sign for the 50,000 pesetas that he's demanding for the 25,000.
I can't ask my father for any more, and Pilar's determined to make that trip."
"Don't worry: as long as my teacher doesn't enter the contest, the prize will be mine and I'll be able to pay all of it."
The following day.
"I won't be able to see you until 4 o'clock
since I have to go to the moneylender's house
as you already know. Luciano
Unable to bear the idea that Angel Roberto, whom she greatly respected, deemed her perverse, she made a resolution.
She had kept hold of the key that the art teacher had made for her to enter the studio.
Luciano had finished earlier than he thought he would.
"I, who held you the happiest woman in the world, find you crying."
"I was right to suppose that you thought badly of me: that's why I've been wanting to give you an explanation."
"You poor girl! I fear you've been tangled up in your own net; Luciano's disgrace can be resolved. As for yours, who knows?!
"Keep that key just in case... Who knows if you might need it sometime!"
"Do you want to tell me what you were doing in Angel Roberto's studio?"
"Since you want to know, I'll tell you what lies behind my dealings with him."
"So in other words, you didn't mind posing as a model!"
"You and yours have forced me to do this."
"Let's leave the past behind... Now I need you to return that key, if you want some peace of mind."
"He's gone off in a real rage. He might not come back."
End of Part Four
Part Five
In vain, Luciano looked for a way to sooth the jealousy that was torturing him.
"Whenever you want, I´ll show you the woman who posed as a model for the work that Angel Roberto´s keeping so secret."
Undocumented lost scene. Probably Luciano arriving at the front of his house during the night.
"What are you planning on doing here in that disgraceful state?"
"I've come from the club where, a moment ago, your name, uttered by the person you so respected, was passing from mouth to mouth..."
"You're lying! Only YOU'd be capable of such infamy."
"Are you defending him?"
"Go away! I don't want to see you like this!"
In Aráceli, don Javier was very worried out the significant sums of money that his son had requested from him,
supposedly to buy materials; what is more, recent news from a friend who had arrived from Madrid infuriated him;
in his son's studio, there was no block of marble but in his house, he had a portrait of Pilar, the schoolmistress, dressed most elegantly.
Aware of Felipe's affection for Pilar, don Javier approached him demanding news; but the teacher had known nothing of the girl since she arrived in Madrid.
That night, don Javier insisted to his wife that they needed to travel to Madrid, to see what was going on.
But the following morning, the postman took it upon himself to thwart the mayor's plans.
I am leaving for a research tour this afternoon
in order to visit monuments and get inspiration before taking part
in the contest that they have been advertising. Luciano
Undocumented lost scene Probably Luciano and Pilar beginning their journey.
Don Javier, very surprised about that trip, decided to write to a friend of his in Madrid, requesting detailed accounts of his son's life there.
Undocumented lost scene Luciano, accompanied by Pilar, took his love around almost all of Spain.
Once the journey is over, Luciano celebrates his return with his friends in Pilar's house.
Two ladies, whose relationship to/with Marín and García Luciano could not easily make out, upon introducing them to Pilar.
Marín and García's wives lost no time in forgetting their role as decent people.
Hiding her indignation, she tried to put herself on the same level as those people.
An when that *** was over...
My child! What are they doing to you?
End of Part Five
One day, Luciano expressed his fears to Pilar at the prospect of his father's immediate arrival:
"I fear that my father will find out about my situation ... or demand that I give you ùp...
I'd do anything before I lose you! You will be no-one's but mine!
The following day, don Javier, who was already in Madrid, sitting opposite his son, asks the question:
This year, I've sent you more than six thousand duros, and I know that instead of buying materials, you've spent it on spoiling and entertaining that woman...
And this has to stop, to avoid the upset that this is causing your poor mother and to save our house from ruin.
Luciano, without looking him in the eye, answers him: "Abandoning Pilar at this moment would be despicable ... It's not her fault."
Don Javier then visits Pilar and insults her: "Unable to trap Luciano as your husband, you're doing it by other means, and are ruining his life and my resources, earned at the cost of many years' work."
Don Javier sharpens the tone of his insults against Pilar and she throws him out of her house.
From that day onward, Luciano works tirelessly to win the contest, the prize for which would relieve him of his debts. But in the social club someone comments:
"Luciano's is a work of great beauty... but the one that Angel Roberto's going to present is sublime... I've seen it in his studio."
Luciano stands up, wobbling. He is totally ruined. And the following morning, Pilar receives a card from Luciano's mother.
At the same time as this card is being sent, a houseboy is leaving with all the money we have left so that Luciano can pay his debts...
I know, and have always said, that you are a good woman. Guide my son away from evil... Be gracious to a mother who begs you on her knees...
Pilar Guerra reads the card with tears in her eyes. She, who in her thirst for revenge had done everything to keep Luciano away from his work, was now willing to plead on his behalf.
Pilar goes again to Angel Roberto's studio to ask him not to send his work to the contest. This is the only way that can Luciano triumph. The sculptor agrees while embracing her like a father.
And at that moment, Luciano appears at the door. Misinterpreting the situation, he points at Pilar:
I´ve been looking for that woman. I still have a final banknote to pay for her false affection. After that, she can come to this house to offer her charms.
Pilar screams and hides her face as an aggressive Luciano approaches over. Angel Roberto intervenes and Pilar flees from the house.
Angel Roberto takes his disciple over to his statue and pushes it onto the floor, shattering it into a thousand pieces.
"But...what you are doing, teacher?", Luciano stammers. "You're guaranteeing my victory!"
"It's...Pilar's reply to your mother's letter", Angel Roberto replies. Luciano, filled with shame, lowers his eyes and begs: "Teacher, come with me so that she'll forgive me."
"...and after putting some belongings in a case she went to the station... She said that she was going to Araceli."
En Araceli, Pilar goes to see doña Mónica, who had replaced her as a teacher at the girls school.
Undocumented lost scene. Probably Luciano and Angel Roberto taking the train.
Undocumented lost scene. Probably Luciano and Angel Roberto on the train or leaving the station.
"I need you to go to don Javier's house right now and tell his wife that I'm here and that I'm begging him to come as soon as he can."
And that very afternoon, Pilar and doña Elvira meet with each other.
"Luciano will recover what he's lost ... and I won't see him again. What your husband didn't achieve with his threats, you have achieved with a single card".
When doña Elvira had left, Felipe approached Pilar. "Since today, you find yourself alone and miserable, I'm going to plead with you... If no one claims your love, let me ask it of you to make you happy..."
Excited, Pilar replied, "You have been too noble... But I can't say anything to you now... Maybe tomorrow...
"Where's Pilar? Tell her, right now, that I need to talk to her".
"Maybe she doesn't want to see you".
"I've come to ask you, on my knees if necessary, to be my wife".
"Your repentance is a very great comfort to me, but it's come too late: another man, to whom I am eternally grateful, has already made that offer".
It was no secret to doña Mónica that it was not exactly love that strengthened her companion's resolve.
Days later. Luciano was sick, stricken with a raging fever.
While strolling on the Cantabrian shore, Ángel Roberto explains to Felipe, "What Pilar feels for you is gratitude...
Her indifference to Luciano is just a new phase of her love. Think about it, Felipe...
Felipe asks Pilar, "Be frank with me... do you hate Luciano"? "No. His repentance drowned my hatred, turning it into indifference".
An understanding Felipe renounces his claim to Pilar, "If you don't hate, you may love him again... I mustn't accept your sacrifice, and I release you from your pledge..."
Luciano's condition was getting worse and worse: the fever wasn't abating.
Pilar needs to come and YOU're the one who'll have to ask her to.
Our son's dying!
Don Javier heads for the school.
"Don Javier wishes to speak to you, my child, and I don't think that you should refuse him".
Miss Pilar, forgive me... I acted badly towards you but did so for my son's sake. Come to his side. I ask you in his mother's name".
From now on, Pilar, you're not going anywhere. You'll take care of me and, just like that, I'll get better in no time.
Undocumented lost scene. Possibly Luciano's sculpture at the contest.
The recovery did not take long and, a little while later...
TELEGRAM The jury at the contest has awarded you the prize. Best wishes. García.
Two months later, the wedding was held. Don Javier, at the rudder of his little steamboat, drives the newlyweds to the capital,
where they will begin their journey as man and wife. And standing on the prow, staring lovingly at each other,
Luciano the sculpter and the schoolmistress Pilar Guerra...
