Hello, I'm Jaime and I'm from Madrid, Spain
With this video, I'm trying to show you the importance
of accents and dynamics in our MIDI secuences.
Through this example, I'll focus on MIDI velocity
so I'm going to use a simple 2 bars drum pattern
As you can see, I've got a drum pattern where
every note has the same velocity value.
As you may notice, it sounds a kind of "robotic"
Lets see if we are able to "humanize" it and to get a better feeling
just changing the MIDI velocities of the notes...
First I'm going to mute all but the hi-hat to better perceive the effect
It sounds very "robotic", doesn't it?
Now I'm going to select all even eightnotes
cause they're in the weak beats of the bar
I'm going to lower its velocities to get a more "human like" performance
Let's listen to it...
As you may notice, it sounds now a little more "humanized"
In a real performance, we tend to play the second half of the bars slightly softer
than first one, so I'm goning to select that notes to lower its velocities
Finally, even bars are also played a little lower than odd ones
so we lower its velocities just a little, cause we want a subtle effect
Now we unmute the previously silenced notes to do the same task with them
We lower velocities on snare and kick notes on weak beats, paying an
special attention to the snare's roll at the end of second bar
Now we slightly lower the velocity of notes in even bars, just as we did with HH
That's it. We've transformed a "robotic" rithm into a
more "humanized" one just using MIDI velocities
We could make it sound even better doing slight modifications
to notes positions... but that would be material for another video :)
I hope this will be useful for someone... Regards from Spain!
