>>Adam - "IT'S COMING! The first big theatrical tornado flick since 1996's
Twister. No, Sharknado does not count people. Into the Storm VS Twister.
Warning: Pun counter incoming. Watch at your own risk.
>>Adam - I was not blown away [1] by Into the Storm. In fact, I thought the
movie blew pretty hard [2] but for the sake of the review I'm going to
press on. Both of these disaster flicks have a pretty uninteresting characters
but Twister fairs much better for me as the actors can actually, you know, act.
Bill Paxton plays the typical 'everyman' Bill Harding. A once passionate
tornado chaser turned ***-wipped husband who's only goal now is to get
his divorce papers signed. Jo Harding makes it *** old Bill as she still
has feelings for him. Helen Hunt still has a passion for storm chasing and is willing
to put herself in harms way. She did watch her dad get ripped out of a fallout
shelter as a child so I guess that would account for a lot. She's pretty twisted
[3] up inside, you could say. That was a stretch, yes. We get a short-lived villain in Twister
with Dr.Jonas Miller. He doesn't have the passion for the chase
though, he's just in it for the money. No disaster flick is complete though without
a cast of zanny side characters. Twister gives us Alan Ruck and the late Phillop
Symore Hoffman. You can tell these guys are having a lot of
fun and they keep things interesting when we are not listening to Jo and Bill argue
for the 100th time about their priorities. Zanny doesn't beging to describe
Into the Storm's Jack-*** supporting actors, Donk and Reevis, played by Kyle Davis and
Jon Reep. These guys are extreme charictures of redneck
youtubers and I was actually pretty fine with that as they are also the only two that
are exciting to watch. I've actually never seen worse acting in a
feature film before. Matt Walsh, who I think is a terrific comedian is way out
of his element. He rivals Tommy Wiseau of The Room at points. Then there's Walking Dead
star Sarah Callies, totally phoning her role in as the mother out on the road,
doing what she can to keep her daughter pissed at her.
It's a really sorry bunch all around. The father is overbearing, the kids are all
attractive and worthless, they throw an old man into the mix randomly to try and compete
with Aunt Meg which fails on all levels.
Now, sometimes a strong story can hold up even the flimsiest of performances so let's
see what the forecast[4] calls for in round 2.
[ROUND 2 : STORY]
>>Adam - (looking up) We're looking at a 100% chance of *** in the script
department[5]. Specifically for Into the Storm. Twister isn't great either but
it gives us motivations and logical reasons for character decisions.
We know Bill was just looking for an excuse to get back into the hunt, into
Hellen Hunt that is. Going to count that or...not a storm pun, alright, fine.
We also know that Jo is off her *** rocker and has a bit of a death wish
when it comes to these giant destructive vortexes of violently rotating winds.
They do have a legitamite reason besides the selfish ones.
Their pet project Dorothy, a weather data-gathering instrument needs to get tossed into
the center of the vortex to better gauge tornado patterns or some such jargen. It's
apparently based on a real-life project called TOTO which also plays off of
Wizard of Oz and not the hit band like I originally thought.
It's a straight-forward picture that keeps our protagonists moving from one
set piece to the next with minimal downtown. Into the Storm is *** mess.
There are some fun sequences but they are so hampered by the director's choice
to go the stupid found-footage route. I can't stand found footage films.
Cloverfield and Chronical being the exceptions but even they didn't necessarily
benefit from it. They could have still been filmed from the same vantage points
without the need to keep reminding us that they are filming it.
Then there's these dumb plots following the father and kids and the storm chasers.
The motivation was lost on me for Pete. He drives Batman's tumbler, for some reason
has someone willing to pay him for his documentary and has the worst leadership skills
on the planet. Then there's the extremely dreadful love story between the teenagers
that are trapped under a pile of rubble. I wanted that steel beam gerder to impale
them and just get it over with. We don't care though right? If the tornadoes
are awesome then who the hail [6] cares about the rest.
[ROUND 3 : ACTION/EFFECTS]
>>Adam - Character development, engaging story, an interesting cast, who needs em'
if there are tornados abound. Call me crazy but I feel like Twister's tornados
still hold up better then this 2014 film. They were certainly more dangerous to me.
Yes, the rediculously growl when they appear but it's damn cool and threatening.
For as much as In the Storm played up the Tumbler ripoff we didn't really get to
see it do anything cool. It apparently can't go around a tree or traffic cones
unless it's a last option. Twister was a 2 hour Dodge Ram commercial but they
did that vehicle justice. Dodging debris, off-roading and even blowing thru a
*** house. This truck means business thru and can weather any storm.
Into the Storm isn't a total waste of time as some creative shots pop up
once in awhile such as the bad-*** fire tornado and the airport scene that really
had no reason to exist outside of just showing us planes getting destroyed.
There was also a Twister easter egg when one of the tornados threw a fake cow
across the road. We get a nice view from inside the eye of
the storm in both movies and I'll give it to the 2014 movie because that was definitely
the best scene of the flick. Easily give it to 1996's Twister overall because
it's just shot so damn well and for as old as it is it can still pack a punch.
[ROUND 4 : MUSIC]
>>Adam - Both films have you typical dramatic scores. Nothing really captivating
in either case. Twister does have some fun jams like Van Halen kicking in during the
vehicle chasing segments but there's not a whole lot
here worth talking about. I believe Into the Storm had a Kidd Rock song
on there so..yeah, Van Halen beats Kid Rock. Music Feuds coming in 20Never.
[CONCLUSION]
>>Adam - I hate to take the wind out of your sails [7] but Into the Storm should
have gone Into the Trash. It has zero reason to exist. Twister at least pushed
the envelop in terms of cgi and what could be accomplished. I'm a big fan of dumb
disaster movies but they have to bring the specacle. It also has to at least attempt
to not have the dumbest cliche's and acting. Just try a tiny bit, that's all I'm asking.
Perhaps I'm way off the mark wallberg and this is the tornado movie fans have been
asking for that don't contain sharks. Comment below and make sure to vote.
More than Just Reviews, This is Movie Feuds. Man, Into the Storm really rained on my
parade [8].
