Give up smokes for Good, is South Australia's first Aboriginal specific smoking sensation campaign,
which is being developed in partnership with Aboriginal Health Services,
other community agencies, and with key respected figures in the community.
The campaign came about because smoking is the single biggest
killer of aboriginal people and a major contributor to chronic disease,
around half of the community smoke.
We thought the best way to raise this issue, and support people to quit smoking, and create
smoke-free environments was to build a campaign in partnership with the community.
The campaign features twelve aboriginal ambassadors who are non-smokers,
these are people who all known and well respected in their local communities,
as well as some who are known across the state and even nationally.
The progress we've been able to make with this campaign,
is because of the strong partnerships we've formed,
and continue to develop as the campaign has grown.
We know the campaign has been really well received within the community,
and we know about 70% of people in the community have either seen or heard the campaign.
We know that the campaign has had an impact on people's quitting, and we're hearing from
people in the community, and from our workforce that people are really starting
to make quit attempts, and quit successfully.
