Hi I'm doctor Shazia Malik, I'm a podiatrist practicing in Montreal, I've been here for
fifteen years.
Ingrown toenails are one of the most common nail problems, but sufferers know that "common"
does not mean "minor." Ingrown toenails can be quite painful, and in the worst cases,
even the slightest pressure on the toe can be unbearable.
An ingrown toenail occurs when a nail grows into the nail bed, usually at the sides of
the nail, instead of resting naturally on top of the skin. After the nail bed is pierced
by the nail, inflammation and infection can soon follow.
Symptoms of an ingrown toenail can include discomfort when wearing shoes or playing sports,
redness and inflammation where the outer edge of a nail joins the skin, and drainage of
fluid or pus from the site can also occur.
The condition can be caused by several factors. Most commonly, these include tight shoes,
cutting nails too short, humid footwear that softens the skin, and even trauma.
In order to obtain treatment for an ingrown toenail, you should schedule a visit with
a podiatrist as soon as possible. Diabetics, in particular, may develop serious complications
from ingrown toenails, and should not delay in consulting a physician.
