Welcome to professor conrad success in school program, Video 1: changing paths. i hope you're ready to help your student turn around on the path he or she has been taking through school. I'm Professor Conrad, and i made the academic turnaround twice in my life. The first time was when i went to the sixth grade. i was a classic underachiever. I had basically breathed my way through elementary school. You know--I took up space and converted oxygen into carbon dioxide. The flowers were happy; they wanted to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. My teacher and parents, though, they weren't so happy. I made it from kindergarten to 5th grade while barely picking up the basic skills and knowledge other students were receiving along the way. i was a slowest reader in my class at Roslyn Road Elementary. elementary When we were in class , I had thoughts like these: "Why is everyone else faster than me?" "Some of them are already done with the chapter." "They're doing the assignment." "They'll get A's." "i've barely finished the first page." "I must not be very smart." "Maybe they're all smarter than I am." "i'm just not good in school." My parents decided they needed to do something, so they enrolled me in an experimental all-boys middle school class. Out of the hundreds of students going into middle school, twenty of the underachieving boys were given the option of taking Mr. Haviland's class. Mr. Haviland turned me around. I went from being the slowest reader in the class to being one of the best. It all happened in one year. i went from being a D student to earning my way onto the honor roll. i don't have the time to tell you exactly what happened in that year. We'll save that for another day--along with the lessons i learned in college many years later, lessons that allowed me to believe that every student I encountered could learn anything i wanted to teach them. Just know this: there is a secret to success in school, but it's a secret all of you already know. Everyone knows it. They just don't all know how to use it.
