What Do You Want To Know About The Range Rover Velar?
The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar has finally made its way to America, and this week we get to spray some sand on its perfectly formed face for the sake of a shakedown.
What do you want to know?.
I believe that the Velar is an experiment.
Land Rover is testing how far it can squash the shape of an SUV into the dimensions of a car, and we’ll soon see if Rover customers are into it.
After seeing the vehicle in person, the company and its design chief Gerry McGovern might actually be on to something.
The Velar doesn’t really look like it’s up for rough off-roading.
I expect a few of you will request mud fording and a Baja run, and Land Rover will most likely have a manicured patch of dirt through which myself and a few other test drivers will be carefully guided.
That said, the Velar’s official spec sheet claims a decent 20.1-degree breakover angle, an impressive 9.9 inches of ground clearance and the ability to safely ford water more than two feet deep.
On road, where most Velars will spend their lives, the top spec is a 30-liter supercharged V6 rated to 380 horsepower.
That configuration weighs 4,471 pounds and can supposedly zip from stopped to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
Two more modest variants; a 20-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a diesel of the same displacement, are also going to be available.
I’ll be scanning through the comments here as I drive the car and write up driving impressions, so check in!.
