3FM interviews Within Temptation on Sziget festival 2011 (Dutch)(En & Hu subtitles)

- I will explain for the people who don’t really know your new album yet. This is your 5th album and there’s a whole theme and concept involved. How would you describe this theme? - It’s really about people getting a second chance to fix the things they didn’t feel right about in their lives. Also for people who are passed away and still want to change things who are getting a second chance. They do this by chasing the ‘bad guys’. It’s based on a comic we had made especially for this album. It’s similar to the x-men and Spiderman stories. - The short videoclips/movies are on your site and the comics are being made. I think it’s really amazing that when you look at those clips and you hear the music you feel like you’re a part of the story, it feels very real. But when you hear the music without the clips it still feels ‘right’. So this way you can interpret the song in many different ways. - It’s mainly because of the way we started all this. We wrote the story first as a base and later created our music as soundtracks for this story. So it isn’t chronological like Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ album but they are songs separately written to fit the story like a soundtrack. We did this in a way that the songs still stand by their selves. So you don’t have to know the story at all to enjoy the songs. - I think it’s funny that there are maybe comic fans that didn’t know you as a band but loved the comic and now discovered and enjoy your music too. - I have to say that the comic gets sold really well and... - It’s going to be produced in America by a big publisher. And so it happens that our comic ends up on websites where they interview the writer of our comic first instead of us. - And the artist who made the images! - It’s really going to be sold in stores over there. It’s really exciting! - I feel the same way. We think it’s so inspiring that we consider to make a second album that is a sequel to this one. So... - We were really in for a change and new goals and I think we really succeeded with this album. We really want to do more things with this concept and also more extreme and experimental things. Working with film was really nice too. - But also seeing the people work that helped us create this album, comic and movies was nice. They were such an enthusiastic team! They all really liked working on this and that gave us a lot of energy to continue this and make a second album. - It’s also nice because this is a concept album. All songs are playable and it would be a shame if we didn’t do that. - I have to say that this is the most exciting album we ever made because I really like to perform these songs live. Not because it’s our last album but because it has something new and refreshing. I like every song that is on this album and that gives me a lot of energy. We wanted to write a complete album that we all liked. We experienced before that there are some songs on an album that you aren’t really 100% happy with. This happened with our past albums and I’m glad this new album only has songs that I really like. The whole band agrees with me on this and that’s nice. - And we kinda forgot how it was to get an adrenalin rush like this. You practice with the band but meanwhile we only did the theatre tours but didn’t perform on stage like a rock band for 2 years. It was nice to do that again because it’s so different! It gets so exiting again! We’re in for a lot more! - What is the ‘hit’ from this album? Which songs made the audience go crazy? - Fire and Ice went really well but... - Faster was amazing... - Yes, they did like that one! - There are no boundaries with our music. We don’t make music typical for the Dutch or typical for people from other countries. - It’s really universal. So yeah... - The world is much more open nowadays. - Trough internet... - We are really typical Dutch people. Traditionally Dutch. We are so different from the Americans or the English. - I always enjoy coming home to the Netherlands, I can't really miss it! At a certain point we did consider to emigrate to another country. But we realized this is who we are, we are Dutch and this is where we belong. This feels great and this is who we are. - We are Dutch and no Americans or something like that... it’s so different! - Within Temptation is really going for it and is excited! You are going to get a really busy summer. Next week you are going to play at Lowlands, new album, a lot of new ideas! But as Dutch people we don’t have to worry that you guys are going to leave us because I guess you really love us all right? - Yes, we really do! - A lot , really a lot! And we always love going to Lowlands festival too! We are always really exited about that. - That’s really my favorite festival! - We’ve had our best concerts there! - Enjoy Sziget and we will all see you guys next week!
