Hello, my name's Frédéric Pirat (Frédéric Pirat, project manager) and I'm project manager at Parrot for Speakers phone products, which are wireless Bluetooth hands-free kits. 0:00:09,0:00:09 (Your job in a few words).
The development of a product at Parrot demands many skills in different areas: electronics, mechanics for design, software. So there really are a lot of people involved in the development of our products. When I joined Parrot 6 years ago, there were about 50 of us, our products were much simpler than today. We are now using "take to speak", multi-speaker recognition, many functionalities we didn't have before, so consequently a lot of people work on a project. The role of the project manager will be to coordinate the work of different teams, in order to successfully develop a product, to produce it whilst respecting cost, quality and time criteria.
(What do you like about your job?).
Making an idea materialise, i.e. you start with an idea, in the beginning there's nothing, it really is a blank sheet, or rather, you just have a vague idea, and you start thinking about how to stand out from the competition, what functionalities can be added to the product, then you go on to the prototype stage, then the mechanical and electronics stages, and then you see it through to the production phase in China. So you can also get sent to China to see the factories and follow the manufacturing. So it's very interesting and rewarding.
(What would you tell a friend about this job?).
The position of project manager allows you to be at the heart of all of the issues, to be in contact with the different departments, such as the technical areas, or areas such as sales and marketing. In fact there are really no limits to the job of project manager. You really follow the entire project from start to finish. So it's great because you can really give life to a project, to an idea.
