Laid out below us is the enchanted Dutch city of Groningen.
Since the Middle Ages it has been besieged, flooded, burned down...
and had the plague.
And now in the 21st century it hosts the annual Eurosonic Festival...
which celebrates new European music and artists.
During this festival the European Border Breakers Awards are held, the EBBA's...
which are presented to new European artists...
who have been successful with their music outside of their own countries...
and have performed at international European festivals...
and playlisted on the European EBU radio stations.
Hey, Michiel Veenstra here at 3FM.
Holland has seen a new musical trend recently...
with the New Cool Collective and Wouter Hamel.
But the biggest name in this genre is Caro Emerald.
She's already had some awesome hits with 'A Night Like This' and 'Back it Up'.
And her debut album 'Deleted Scenes From the Cutting Room Floor'...
has already been released in several European countries. Caro Emerald.
When I first heard 'Back It Up', it was like...
I was glad that I could be the demo singer.
I thought it was such a cool song. I was like: Oh my God.
Groovy, it's not too complicated, it's very easy listening...
but still it was very jazzy and it had some complicated melodies...
and nice timing and rhythm. So, it was like love at first sight basically.
It's been crazy, this year has been crazy. It's so...
I can't really... like, I don't have any one picture in my mind of 'this was this year'.
First everything exploded in Holland...
and then I got the chance to do the same thing in Europe...
and we've only started out, but I was travelling back and forth...
going into planes, hotel rooms, meeting new crews...
meeting record labels in every country. It was like a roller coaster, definitely.
That's the only way to describe it.
I would love to do 'Riviera Life' because then I can test the balance.
The reason that it just exploded is I think a combination of two things:
One, the melodies are very catchy...
and the second thing is that the sound is very different.
It's very enjoyable, I mean, it's like a dream come true to experience all this.
But sometimes of course it's been hard and it's been stressful.
The EBBA Award, wow.
You know, people acknowledge me as a European musician.
Somebody who has a career in Europe. I'm really happy.
Please come down and meet us, Caro Emerald.
I think it's really important to thank all of my fans:
The Europeans, including the Dutch.
Thank you so much for all your support and the great messages...
and this is my very first international award. Thank you.
