we're talking with brad johnson a forecast the fax number aba was your
reaction when you heard the news the official news that twenty twelve was
indeed and the uh... the hottest in u_s_ history
well the writing was on the wall ever since the just extraordinary
and
just overly in injustice incredible she'd
uh... that
the country faced in march actually that just put it so by the time you know
something was wrong around
are following winter would have had to be in the coldest on record
floor two thousand twelve to be anything other than the hottest year
so this is something that
you know if you did a tension this is just
the agatha reactions i'm hoping it's good to see
the wall street journal and there aren't
and other media outlets report on this because that's really i think what is so
important is that we recognize
what we're doing to the weather
bread rise in the campaign director forecast the fax in the as a sort of
campaign director brad for wondering uh... it by the specific
campaigns adjuster you're gonna run against this guy bsc bsc are logistic in
uh... in miami or any other meteorologist for that matter or also
climate change denies
yet were we've actually contacted the road and i swear to
uh... c_b_s_ news
uh... the president of c_b_s_ news yet figured we used to work for fox news
and we asked him you know wired a promoting global warming to tires
it up at a national chain that what you know
the weather will be well it'll be drive the heart of the cold
native bernard will be there
artwork more looking to take that i
you know when asked basically get the american public to ask
uh... is c_b_s_ news if that's really their position and we've also already
been running on campaigns and we do support of our tens of thousands of
members
out to challenge the american meteorological society which certifies
meteorologists essentially as scientists
and a lot of these t_v_ people
we don't have scientific degrees were certified
by this society or global warming dinars
and we've been challenging them on that
this guy david bernardin has the chief mural just of the c_b_s_ affiliate in
miami has he started it all up to uh... to your efforts
vcs by i would say i'm trying to remember feast we did in response but
ight be evening so far he has not
and it said
and yet the bernard has pleaded that the earth is cooling he's defended the
heartland institute which is the right wing think-tank
uh... he's also compared uh... bernard as compare those who believe in global
warming to
mass murders is that right
well that's what the heartland is that it did
ida i don't think i bernard went that far
that's what he defended you know when you're defending the heartland is a
passenger at the same here defending
and a hard line as it is funded by uh... fossil fuel companies right
fossa feel companies right wing companies
and
we in fact would natural things we don't even really know who finds them
but allot fewer companies do this year than did last year and in large part
because of the efforts of
forecast the facts
validation all those meteorologist or out there were climate change tonight as
their actually are some they're doing the right thing right there somewhere
out there at some stations were being
particularly courageous given the corporate uh... both parents that they
have who are talking about these connections so that's absolutely true
any unfortunately the reality is that most t_v_ people most
did any relatives
uh... runaway
from this incredibly important topic
uh... but you see some
of the hardcore deniers that you're talking about and then you see some real
heroes
in usually they're people who is it
pretty good job security but you know you
it's really a
over the country from rhode island down to south carolina even
you see
meteorologists who are
just explaining the fact
and as far as the uh... a lot of people may think well you know i trust my
meteorologist images in the news he tells me what has to be rainy or snowy
or their schools because because of icy roads and the i mean there are
pillars of the community and a lot of these are local of television
areas
um... what how was it that though i mean
that this particular group of boat people
came to sort of passes being these climate change denier something is it
simply just sort of the the corporate character that they have that they saw
the writing on the walls whereas with a corporate parents wanted them to do i
mean is it isn't that simple
i mean i think there's a live
the let different pathways and you're talking about
they're usually upper-middle-class as older
usually white men and so they had their politics kind of reflect that
but it's reflective of you know our congress and these are people in
positions of power and authority
and the fossil fuel industry in those two
wish to support them ab worked really hard to ensure
that we're stuck in the status quo so some t_v_ meteorologists are given
juggle christians who don't want to believe
uh... in the science some of them are are
conservative skeptics some of them just don't want to anger
their management
i think some of them are brother just frankly adalah near my experience in tv
both on local news and and network news there are some the urologist who are
very bright or scientific or or piano but oh well educated they are also some
meteorologists were frankly
not very smart it doesn't take a lot of smarts to be on t_v_ into the compelling
on t_v_ in fact some people would argue that if you're too smarty come across as
being
he may condescending your audience you want somebody is a little bit more like
your audience and that's
perfect for both your sports guy and your weather got the weather guy in my
experience
does not always been the brightest ball but he doesn't really warm trout telling
you about the snow to cover the market that
well i don't know i have to say in my personal experience that
pretty much all the t_v_ neeraj is that i've met
whether they're uh... cart you know defending the signs are attacking it or
really quite hard
hardworking and quite intelligent individuals
and no matter whether they're kind of
you do
what their high q_ is so to speak
the whole point is that they have an amazing responsibility and what the work
that they do actually saves lives
and so i i i don't think it it really serve anybody dismissed
uh... what they do
uh... whether or not you doin i like to have a conversation about food home with
them
okay brad johnson bring me back from alleged
allah god yes they do what they do survey at greater purpose in our
communities and warning us about bad weather they do serve lives is just a
archivos urban baffled at the why they don't have a more serb vigorous
approach to science and to understanding some of the global picture and and all
these things but brad again for people want to get to people want to get
involved
then go to your website what is on the other two they go out of the local
weatherman at the state's there what not with these weathermen are out there
doing a live report and say hey
while helping your income what why don't you understand this is should they be
more involved in that sense
well the first thing to do is to ask them
idvd religious you know what their
weathers they're taking a speeches
you know the reality is is the majority just don't really want to talk about
aurora or i i i should say are afraid to talk about it
but they also have this responsibility to respond to their viewers
so i would say the into the basic question go to forecast the facts and
then also
contact your local meteorologists and asked them
do they said do they support
the you know the science on climate change and a good example of that is the
american airlines of the society
re last year put out a strong information statement on climate change
which is easy to look up
any meteorologist with their salt
there's no reason for them to disagree with that uh... is a clear statement of
the science of how
the fossil fuels that were burning
are changing the weather that we see
in this country
and uh... you know as their survivors of sandy and the drought in the trade show
in
uh... the flooding and better going out this is something that's affecting
pretty much literally every single american
already
and we have to you know and that's why i'm what these t_v_ people do is so
important
brad johnson campaign director for forecast the fax you can follow them on
twitter at that
climate brad brad thanks so much for being part of program we appreciated and
good luck to you
thank you
brad johnson from for cap
as a fax to get his continues
after this
