The family of a girl who was starved of oxygen during her birth has been awarded significant
medical negligence compensation after going to the High Court in London.
The court heard that complications over the heart rate of the girl's mother led to the
midwives moving her into a side room at Portsmouth's St Mary's Hospital to await an obstetric registrar.
However, when he arrived, he left the room for a few crucial minutes to collect his bleeper
and it was that period that made the difference.
Twelve years on, the girl now suffers cerebral palsy, which caused her father to leave the
navy in order to support his family in person. The hospital didn't accept responsibility
for the complications, but Mrs Justice Carr agreed that the family was due medical negligence
compensation.
The amount is yet to be decided, but it's thought to be in the millions of pounds. If
someone in your family has suffered life-changing issues as a result of negligence from medical
