QUEEN Elizabeth II is celebrating the 64th anniversary of her coronation today.
But how long has the Queen reigned?
The Queen, now 91, was crowned at the age of 27 during a memorable coronation ceremony
in Westminster Abbey on June 2 1953.
More than 20 million people around the world watched coverage of the coronation which was
the first television event watched by the masses.
The coronation was held more than a year after Elizabeth II became Queen when her father
King George VI died on February 6 1952.
According to tradition, Britain entered a period of mourning and the pomp and ceremony
of the coronation was deemed inappropriate.
Queen Elizabeth II is actually celebrating her 65th year as monarch because she technically
became Queen the moment her father died.
The British Throne can never be vacant - hence the expression the King is dead, long live
the King.
The Queen became the first British monarch to commemorate a Sapphire Jubilee - marking
the 65th anniversary of her accession - in February.
She spent the day in quiet contemplation at her Sandringham estate and the only formal
recognition of the milestone were traditional gun salutes in London.
The Queen surpassed the reign of her great great grandmother Queen Victoria to become
Britains longest ruling monarch ever on September 9 2015.
At the time Elizabeth II said that the record was not one to which I have ever aspired.
She added: Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones my own is no exception
- but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages
of great kindness. The Queen celebrated her 91st birthday on
April 21, but she will mark her official birthday on Saturday June 17.
British monarchs often hold their official birthdays in summer months to reduce the chance
of bad weather spoiling the celebrations.
The tradition is thought to have started during the reign of King George II in 1748.
George II was born in October but the annual summer military cavalcade became a celebration
of the king as well as the armed forces.
On her official birthday, Queen Elizabeth is expected to join other members of the Royal
Family at the Trooping of Colour parade, which marched between Buckingham Palace, The Mall
and House Guards Parade.
