Fallout 4 Vr Review Video Games EH
hello and welcome back to yes guy gaming I wanted to try something a little bit
different a while back me and a buddy started a series called video games
eight where we ran a really long podcast we talked about the latest games were
playing just stuff that was in the news and about game design and stuff like
that but since we've fallen off we've gotten really busy I've gone into game
school he got a job at Rockstar so we haven't been doing a ton of that kind of
stuff but you know I've been studying a lot of boat design and I want to try to
revamp this video games a series so if you bear with me I think I'm gonna
shorten these episodes I'm just do kind of discussion series
about popular games games that I'm playing maybe I have people on here with
me maybe not just kind of do short discussions about my thoughts and kind
of some of the learnings that I'm taking from popular games and game designs so
if you think that's that's something you'd be interested please I'd
appreciate the support with likes or hit that subscribe button to subscribe to
yes guy gaming would mean a lot to me but hopefully this series can can take
off or at least have some sort of success so I definitely appreciate that
so for the first episode of the new and improved videogames AI wanted to talk
about fallout 4 VR it's a game that I've been playing a lot recently and
something that I definitely wanted to kind of focus on and study a little bit
in time kind of take some learnings from for any of you out there who haven't had
a chance to try out the HTC vive virtual reality with its motion control
controllers and the kind of headset rooms scale gameplay I highly suggest
you beg a friend or try to find make new friends with somebody who has won it is
an experience that you just can't get playing other other games I'm lucky
enough to have won and when follow for VR dropped I knew I had to get the game
and tried out because to me it's really the first title that's come out for the
HTC 5 that's actually something that's a large scale game that you can put a ton
hours into and that's not really just a tech demo or kind of an expanded version
of inherent to the virtual reality devices
how immersive these worlds are you are stepping into this world you're looking
through these goggles and you are in this space looking around so and some of
the other demo versions of the game like the lab or a rec room you're just kind
of standing around looking at and you're in this space you look at your hands
you're holding tools and equipment and throwing *** around and it's a ton of
fun and incredibly immersive even with very little effort put into the games
it's a pretty crazy task for the team of Bethesda to bring the game the game
Fallout 4 into the HTC vive and make it functional and actually run properly on
anybody's system and I gotta say it is one of the most immersive gaming
experiences I've ever had putting on that headset and entering the
Commonwealth for the first time was crazy I played games and kind of demos
where you know there's people talking to you and there's stuff in front of you
that feels real but in Fallout 4 you hop in and you're having conversations with
people and you're looking at them face to face there's an actual dialogue
system where your character talks in this game and I found myself standing in
front of people and they're talking to me and I wanted to respond those first
few scenes when you're kind of just walking through your house and talking
to your husband or wife and codsworth it's just like god I'm I'm actually in
this place it's incredibly immersive about the effects of that we're off
pretty quickly as you are just immediately immersed in that game and
you kind of stop noticing it becomes almost normal that you're kind of
immersed in this world that this is this is how it is and when you finally make
your way out of vault 111 and making your way into the Commonwealth and start
meeting enemies and getting guns and actually start getting into the gameplay
in the actual game I don't know if that's something that I'll ever get used
to when you see the radroaches or the mole rats or the ghouls rushing at you
and attacking you I am literally getting *** my pants
Oh oh god that gets jarring seeing these things coming right out your face and
the feeling of wielding that pistol for the first time and taking aim and taking
a shot and finally getting your own headshot that you earned because you
actually aimed and shot it it's a feeling that I
compared to anything else that I've ever felt playing a video game before
now I played with the walking mechanics where you kind of move your finger along
the touchpad to kind of move your character through the space and this
worked pretty well I mean there's no real option to kind of move faster you
either walk or sprint which kind of sucks and if you don't really have a
powerful enough machine you can kind of get a little bit sick like I did my
machine's not the strongest I probably have the lowest possible settings for VR
possible so when I was using the move thing I was kind of getting a little bit
sick the frame way didn't quite keep up for me but I'm sure if you have a
stronger machine that would work really well having said that though when I
switched over to the teleport I found that it didn't really interrupt my
gameplay at all and I found it way more useful to just point with my left hand
where I wanted to go while doing everything else with my right hand
I've played fallout 4 a lot on the PlayStation 4 but when I entered into
the fallout 4 VR it was a totally different game
experience for me using the actual gun in your hand to aim yourself and fire
rather than just looking at a reticule on the screen made the experience
completely different in regular follow four I found myself being a little bit
more conservative aiming up for perfect headshots using vats a lot more but in
the VR I'm finding myself way more panicked and energetic and just shooting
using way more ammo than I would normally use because I'm not as good as
shot with my actual hand as I am with the controller of all the hours I've
spent playing Fallout for Fallout 4 VR was probably the first time that
actually genuinely felt scared when I saw those feral ghouls running at me I
was genuinely scared something that I can't say that I felt playing the game
on PlayStation 4 now the one thing that I wish they had spent a little bit more
time on is implementing the VR as motion controls into game play the gunplay
works well and that that's kind of the the star of the game but everything else
around that use of the menus you know picking up items and stuff like that is
pretty much the same as it was in the console edition which that makes the
menus so difficult to navigate through the controller doesn't really have a
d-pad properly set up because the touch pads are kind of very
sensitive and you need to touch a certain area on the side and to make it
work so when you're using your pip-boy it's cool you can bring it up to look at
it it doesn't pause the game though which kind of sucks and Wow but it's
immersive I don't know take your pick on that but it's tough to
navigate through because you're using your left hand while holding it this way
but then the axis of the controller is twill is twisted so when you're trying
to scroll up it's actually sideways but just because you have your arm tilted so
I ended up making a bunch of dumb decisions in my inventory just because I
couldn't quite get the controls right it's clear that the motion controls and
the VR systems implemented in fallout for VR are not perfect but they
definitely got a lot of things right though when I entered the water for the
first time and actually used the swimming mechanics I was incredibly
surprised at what happened you're actually using your arms to kind of
stroke and pull yourself through the water and the sight you're looking
around the water is totally different than when you're looking at a third
person or even a first-person view on a television screen you're actually
underwater and panicking like oh gosh how far is the surface I can't see where
is this thing I'm looking for it was it was crazy it's followed for VR perfect
no there's a lot wrong with it they had to dumb down the graphics they do all
sorts of things that kind of lessen the gameplay to add in these very few
special moments of gameplay into this game and playing this game at length for
the 30 40 hours that you need to play to get a solid character it's gonna be a
lot of time spent in the VR which you can cut your neck and kind of get sore
from looking around you're actually standing up the whole time not relaxed
in the coach so fat *** like me is like slugging around I'm getting tired after
just playing an hour because I'm actually moving around but I'm really
impressed that Fort Worth Bethesda for actually trying and making the effort to
put this game into the VR yeah they're charging 80 dollars for a game that a
lot of people already have but I am so happy that I spent the money and tried
this out I really hope that other studios can try this with some of their
popular games just port them over to VR I would love to play some popular
franchises in virtual reality if it doesn't take
too much effort to pull it over I would love to see that I know Bethesda is also
working on Skyrim for the PlayStation VR and that would be awesome as well I want
to see more dev teams take this chance and go for it
so we can see more people jumping over to VR and being able to play triple-a
titles rather than just tech demo so Bethesda thank you for doing that and I
want to see more because I want to see it improve well that's about all I gotta
say about fallout for VR I got to thank you guys for watching hopefully this
this type of video works so well I enjoy just talking and hopefully you guys can
enjoy hearing some of my thoughts and just as I kind of study and learn about
game design and games and all sorts interesting stuff so thank you again for
watching and make it all the way through this video and I hope to see you guys
next time on videogames eh?
