Antlers are powerful weapons for male whitetail deer, and even coyotes give mature bucks a
wide berth when they’re in hard horn. The biggest bucks command respect from all wildlife
that share their homes . But this time of year, bucks shed their antlers, and that’s
when everything changes. Antler drop can occur from December through
April, depending on the individual deer. The bases decalcify, and the antlers simply fall
off, sometimes together, sometimes over a period of days.
And suddenly, old deer that ruled the roost for the past four months lose rank in the
pecking order. Now, even small bucks with antlers still attached can move their superiors
around at will. Watch the show as a mature buck, now bald,
takes out his frustration on everything smaller than he is. This was filmed at a feeding area
along a creek where wildlife often congregated to eat…
Finally, a younger buck sends him on his way. It’s all part of the fascinating Kansas
Outdoors. I’m Mike Blair for Kansas Wildlife and Parks
