I studied arts, as opposed to science. It is interesting to see how, when I talk to my colleagues,
to Doctors in Chemistry, we reason differently but reach the same conclusions.
They might tend to think in terms of molecules and radicals,
while I will sort my ingredients using more intuition, but we will get to the same result.
This is really interesting, diversity, to bring together people, personalities and cultures to make a strong team.
To work as a pair is a wonderful thing, I can be the author or co author.
I might need help, or an external view but, as master perfumer, I am open to others, I am also there for support.
When I have a good idea, just like a writer has a good story,
I begin shaping the fragrance, going on over months or even over years.
One needs tenacity.
I prefer to start from a figurative concept, I find it easier.
I will start from a beautiful rose, a beautiful jasmine or jennet, rather than starting from an abstract note.
Abstract is not my thing.
Once I have deciphered and duplicated the scents of nature, I try to make a perfume out of it.
What matters most in my job, and I believe it is the same for my peers, is to find ideas.
The greatest achievement for a perfumer is to have unique ideas and turn them into best sellers.
As I always say, we are trendsetters.
I have some ideas, not hundreds of them. To have a hundred ideas is to have weak ideas.
I’d rather have two, three strong ideas to create stunning men’s or women’s perfumes.
