How to Practice Proper Sports Etiquette. Sports are fun and provide great exercise. But any
competition can quickly turn sour when someone decides to boo their opponent or yell at an
official. Don't be the poor sport -- be the star of your team. You will need Rule book
or agreed-upon rules Athletic competition and opponent. Step 1. To play by the rules,
you must first know the rules. Lay down ground rules with your friends or study the rule
book of a league you are in. Step 2. If you're participating, show some effort. Play to the
best of your ability, even if you're not very good at the sport. The fun can be easily drained
from any athletic event when someone isn't trying. Step 3. Be respectful of your competitors,
teammates, and officials. If you think an official should reconsider a call, discuss
it with them respectfully instead of screaming at them. Don't fight back if an opponent or
even a teammate starts a fight with you. Step 4. Applaud good plays or calls and let the
bad ones go. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Step 5. Be gracious
if you win. This means not parading around and declaring yourself better than the loser.
Be a gracious loser, as well. You can still treat the winner with respect rather than
pout or say that the game was unfair. Step 6. Shake hands with the opponents and congratulate
them on a game well played. If everyone follows these basic sportsmanship rules, then the
game will be a great experience for everyone. Did you know Little League Baseball was founded
in the United States in 1939 by Carl Stotz.
