My name is Elector Augustus. 'Oh,' you will say, 'another Augustus again!
How come the Saxons were so affectionate to that name?' Surely, we were
not all born in mid-summer. No, no, no -- the German Augustus was derived
from the most important title of Roman emperors -- Augustus meaning the
Most Exalted. And Saxony had become most exalted -- rich and powerful,
that is -- since my time at the latest. Just to make this clear, in all modesty.
Back then we had the oil of our times -- silver. The largest silver vein of the
then known world was found in the Ore Mountains. And I had a castle built
exactly in that place, as it had never been seen before; crammed with the
most valuable pieces of art money could buy far and wide. Who else if not us
could afford it? Et voilá -- there it is.
But what am I saying? French was spoken only by that allegedly strong
Augustus, my descendant. I preferred Latin. And so the castle of the Most Exalted stands
out there, just like a crown on the silver treasure, also known as -- you
will have guessed it -- Augustusburg Castle.
