Hi everyone, David here... doing the lesson 33, This time doing a follow up of the lesson
32, in lesson 32 we did a coordination exercise 5 vs 4 and now with are doing a coordination exercise
5 vs 4 vs 3. Our right hand is going to be subdividing this "3"
Our right hand is going to be playing the "3" in 16th and 8th notes
Let´s remember the last exercise (5 vs 4)
16th notes.
8th notes
Remember that the full explanation of this exercise is on lesson 32. So check it out before you start this one in order to fully understand lesson 33.
The first thing we have to do is play 16th notes with the right hand playing three different instruments.
I have 2 cymbals and a Floor Tom, but you can play any instrument.
Try not to do it on crash cymbal or anything that generate too much sound, the dynamic of the pattern may lost.
So, play 3 different instruments in 16th notes, like this:
16th notes against pulse
Full exercise with right handed 16th notes
Take your time and do it slowly, this is harder than it sounds,
Do it slowly and use a metronome.
Next step is to play 8th notes with the right hand
basically the same subdivision but now in 8th notes instead of 16th notes.
The cycle of "3" is formed again, but now is going to feel "larger" because the figures are larger.
All this against the 5 we are playing with our feet against the binary rhythm that the left hand is playing (2 and 4)
8th notes with pulse
Full exercise played with right handed 8th notes
Combining 16th and 8th notes in the same phrase
Even if polyrhythms or this kind of material is not your favorite
I encourage to do it because is an extreme coordination work
and when we work coordination with hand and feet we get balance!
And this will help you a lot when you play "easier" patterns
or anything that do not require a lot of balance, it will be way easier if you can play this type of exercises
For all of you who actually like to do this sort of things, this exercise can be extended and play more subdivisions and make it more complicated pattern,
if you have any idea, record it and share with the community so we can learn from each other.
