Hello my friends, welcome one more time here your program Vagabundeando
and today as every week we´ll take you to a very interesting place
full of faith and very loved for all Mexicans
I´m Viviana Gil.
I´m Juan Carlos de la Mora
I´m very happy that you´re joining us
as every Monday in one of the catholic places more important in Latin America
we´re talking about Basilica de Guadalupe
so as we say every week…
¡¡To wander away!!
Well, fellas we are with Gaby Treviño in charge of guided tours
here in Basilica de Guadalupe, thank so much for granting us this interview
she is going to tell us about Basilica’s atrium, isn´t it?
Yes of course, this place welcomes you, we wait you here
well we´ll give you a little explanation about this huge place
it´s a wonderful to know that we are surrounded by people full of faith
with all their feelings and give them to Guadalupe ***, here in her house
as well as part of people´s identity in every of our temples
not only in the New Basilica
but in every little houses that had our Guadalupe *** from 1531
all this place, the atrium which we are looking
you can see each one of the temples
in XIX century we had more temples, but those ones were disappeared
only we have with most notorious from 1531 up to now
then we hope so that you enjoy it
A place for families that come to visit the ***
what they give part of their time and know more about our history
The Mexicas were one of last cultures in Mesoamerica
they thought that universe kept alive giving blood and human hearts
the sacrifice was an act of religious commitment
they believed in an unique god but with several characteristics.
While that happens in Mesoamerica, in Spain at the end of XV century
the catholic kings Fernando and Isabel decreed that all Spaniards should adopt catholic faith
if they didn´t do it they would be expelled from Spain.
When Conquerors arrived to Tenochtitlan on November 8, 1519
the kind of religious conquest was in order to evangelize
Indigenous people with humanism and charity
that´s why many of them interested in Christian faith and as example Juan Diego
The redemption message gets to them through friars
for ripping their beliefs out an encounter between two worlds
that´s why following catholic laws, God sent his mother Mary of Guadalupe
to delivering that beatified message for common good
of conquerors and conquered.
On Saturday December 9, 1531 in little hill of Tepeyac
an Indian called Juan Diego heard a maiden´s voice
that called for his name and she revealed her will.
Which was constructed a temple, but bishop didn´t believe Juan Diego
this one has to prove him, Juan Diego´s tilma several roses fell
revealing ***´s image.
Guys, are you enjoying the history of this place?
Let me tell you that there are more about
but it´s time for commercial break because we´re talking about Codice Guadalupano
you are talking about precinct´s history
Why are the buildings sinking and the basilica looks a little inclined?
Of course, it´s good that you have paid attention!
This place that is main atrium it looks like leveled but it isn´t
in prehispanic times was Texcoco lake
all the buildings that we´ll visit them have a kind of movement
one of them to the front like Old Basilica or Expiatory Temple
and other ones that are sinking from original level
so you can see those little spaces modified, that´s why we must take Prehispanic´s history
In this regard, Have you looked for any option to resolve this problem?
Because it´s a historic heritage, Is there a risk?
Yes we have, but here in Basilica we have worked to rescue these spaces
for all the people want to know them
in case of old Basilica, it has worked to put a hydraulic system
to avoid its sinking and still join of it.
What do you think Gaby If we continue with this tour?
And you take us to another wonderful place here in the Basilica
The Codice Guadalupano is full of details and symbols
which can be read and interpreted in easy way by Indigenous
It has 16 codes which ones are
clouds, sun shines, shroud, eyes, face, mouth, hair, brooch
hands, ribbon, tunica, tepetl, moon, flower with four petals
shoes and angel.
In nahuatl language Mexico means “moon”
Mextli means “moon” Xictl means “belly bottom” and Co means “in”
therefore Mexico means “ In moon´s belly bottom”.
We are located in an important place of Basilica de Guadalupe
The Garden of Roses, and Gaby going to talk us about it!
Well guys this place as you said, it´s beautiful and important
because we are at the food of little hill
here is where the *** appeared before Juan Diego
the history tells that Juan Diego went to take mass
he used to do it, he was 57 years old
he came from his little house along this huge place
surrounding the little hill to arrive mass
then it says that he started to hear very loud birdsong
nowadays those ones remain, when you go up there
So he heard them very loud like kind of guide
then following the birds up the little hill
where the mother appeared to him that is *** of Guadalupe
she was called in the beginning as “Tonatzin”
identified like Mother of the People, brunette Mother
Juan Diego noticed, she is Mother of God, he started to talk with her, called her lady, my mother, in respectful way
where *** asked to Juan Diego that a temple should be constructed on Tepeyac´s flat
he anxious decide to go with archbishop Juan de Zumarraga
this one didn´t want to attend him
Juan Diego afflicted, returned to little hill
he met again with *** of Guadalupe, she tells him, don´t worry about that
try again, this time Zumarraga asked the great proof
Juan Diego will ask to *** the great proof
but his uncle Juan Bernardino was sick of plague
this ill didn´t exist in Mexico was carried by Spaniards
then Juan Diego decided to go for a priest
but he wanted to avoid the ***
surrounding the little hillof Tepeyac when the *** appeared to him again
she tells him that “don´t worry” in one of most beautiful phrases from Nicamapagua
that is “I´m not there that I´m your mother you are not under my lap and protection
go with archbishop Zumarraga take the proof”
he will go up to the top where we have other temple that you´ll see it
here is where the indigenous Juan Diego found those roses
that´s why this garden is called Garden of Roses
We are located in Parrish of the Indians
the older place in all precinct isn´t Juan?
So it is Vivi, in fact this chapel was constructed in 1649
which served to keep the image and was venerated it until the new basilica was constructed
And we have to say that Juan Diego remains rest here
and of his uncle Juan Bernardino also.
It´s called of Indians because here according with the tradition
Juan Diego lived in this place, an Indian brotherhood settled in 1679
In the sacristy can be seen part of the foundations of the two frists chapels
that were built to tribute our Lady of Guadalupe.
This chapel remained roofless to weather until 1998
in this year was restored the 450 anniversary of Juan Diego´s death
After talking about Old Basilica´s history
it´s time for commercial breaks, we´ll be right back!
As we said to you, the Old Basilica, was opened on May 1, 1709
The temple facades represent the different *** of Guadalupe apparitions
those ones are of Doric style
has three naves, eight columns, fifteen vaults and four towers of three parts
The repairs of the altar were finished in 1806
In its interior the temple has 38 stained-glass windows
that depict passages of Mary´s life.
In the central dome is an oil lamp with hundred of prisms cut by hand and 225 light bulbs
There are four sculptures of Archangels
put on the vault of bronze that was brought from Brussels.
As we can see, right behind me is located The Chapel of Blessed Sacrament
its flat ceiling was replaced by a vaulted one and a very ornate altar rising at the rear.
The murals preserved by this old basilica were made on canvas
some of them are called “El primer milagro de la Virgen de Guadalupe
and La vocación de los indios a la fe”
He saw them for him is a miracle but this flowers are very famous in Mexico
those ones are not from here, they are from Spain
but for an Indigenous to see these roses in an time that not flourish
fragrant, he knows that is his proof, cut them, framing in his tilma
this one is very important because on this the ***´s image will be printed
he carries his tilma, running anxious with Zumarraga
he knows that the roses are very fragrant
decides to spread his tilma to show the flowers but not only those ones
the Mother´s image *** Of Guadalupe was there
in a time very difficult full of struggles that will gather both people
Spaniards and Indians, accepting mestizos
that helps to realize true civilization is the civilization of love
What do you think of this tour, wonderful doesn´t it fellas?
But we have more about that
You right Juan we have more but after of these commercial breaks
we continue on Vagabundeando.
Right behind me is located the New Basilica of Guadalupe
let´s see it follow me!!
In seventies the Old Basilica was very damaged
to this situation the abbot Guillermo Shulemburg organized a committee
for constructing a new one.
The architect in charge was Pedro Ramirez Vazquez
the first stone was blessed and was put on December 12, 1974
Almost two years later the work finished on October 12, 1976
and the sacred image was moved to The New Basilica.
The ceiling is made of seaming and patinated copper by its color resembles to ***´s mantle
its interior is made of Canadian wood.
Its walls are covered in red quarry, the altar, ambon and floor are covered in marble
Even Basilica´s interior the presbytery is circular set on February 2, 1990
above of this one can be seen a mahogany altarpiece, 30 meters height
8.7 meters width, at center can be seen the great glorious cross at its food *** Mary´s image
The basilica has a baptistery and nine high chapels from people
can participate in the celebrations
In addition it has the holy chapel, the Guadalupan crypt and Monumental organ
No doubt Vivi this precinct has many surprises, doesn´t it?
Of course, don’t forget to watch the second part the next Monday
for continuing with this tour.
See you next Monday for enjoying of Tepeyac hill
I´m Juan Carlos de la Mora.
