excited chat with you today and that's a very well be he
i handle
uses alabama i'm here haha cannot we've been talking about is the importance of
of it's and physical activity
hesione why don't you get us started okay
thank you so much talent so i can show you picture myself i use the way two
hundred pounds when i was twelve years old
uh... second it was just a very different experience that when i was
nineteen years old i was four hundred pounds
one day i need to buy suit
detailer puts his tape measure around my waist at sixty two inches demonstrated
sixty inch tape measure so i made about that date to focus on diet and exercise
i lost over two hundred pounds no surgeries no fat diets new trainers so i
would love to know is what's your advice to the two hundred pound fusions of
america the twelve year olds are struggling with their way
and how can we empower them to make that first step
well first of all kyshin i just want to congratulate you on such a huge
accomplishment and i know it's been
uh... challenging jerry but you look amazing and more importantly i know you
feel amazing
what i would say to yelled kids uh... you know and and and i would not just
talk to the kids but i would talk to the
people in their lives their parents their teachers me
the first thing that we wanna make sure that we do is not make this an issue
about looks uh... we should really talk to kids about
uh... how they feel how they feel inside so that would not just dealing with this
physical manifestations
of of uh...
of the challenge but really tapping into
what's going on inside that head of the ab of that child
and then we wanna talk about ways of uh... to make it fun
uh... you know when i talked to my kids uh... and we were going through some of
these similar challenges that obviously will my kids were little they work
you know were faced with the the huge challenges you were faced with but
i never talked about week in the household
we just started making changes and we make changes in a way that didn
um... eight-year aidid
didn't of make him feel badly about themselves at the meeting make them feel
in your ship over it
because truly kids that age can't control what they eat
so it's that mom you know i took it upon myself to make sure that we just
surrounded them with foods
that were healthy and that they could be whenever they wanted to you know you
just have to
you get the temptation out of the household wherever possible
and then just try to make activity find i mean most kids just really wanna play
and if you talk about
exercise in terms of play and not
you know making kids feel like they have to be a athlete arctic they have to be
graded sport
uh... but you get out and get 'em walking something simple um... you just
start out with walking in you make them feel
successful in very small ways
so i think your overall we have to keep in courage in kids we have to make it
fun
we don't want to make it about how they look we wanna make about how they feel
uh... and
all of us
in our in the deadlines of children
who what the etc was around us
we as adults have to make sure that we're taking ownership as well and we're
doing everything that we can to make that journey i will be easy for them is
here for them
selection let's hear from maxine acts that was done that is great kyshin and
congratulations on your personal success
policy is like the note i left behind act of focus on improving test scores
we have seen a d emphasis on health and physical education
and so mrs obama in your mind
why can schools due to maybe create ad
good valid something that these kids both they perform well on tests but get
the physical activity that they meet
that's a great question and you we've been talking about this uh... all
throughout the tour uh... secretary dump in our secretary of education whose
uh... wonderful
individual are who is uh... show deep concern about this issue talks about it
in terms of
a fitness in education
being like a false choice
that we've treated it is that you can do one or the other but you can't do both
and what we know and when we know in our hearts as parents that both are
important and research issues
uh... proving that
uh... to be true uh...
because uh... uh... kids performance on test in attendance
is directly related to their health
uh... how they feel whether they're moving everyday you know whether they're
starting out there days with a good balanced breakfast at all plays a role
and how they performed in school
so if we start out with that premise that physical fitness and good nutrition
is key to academic success
at the start there
then the choices that we make throughout the day will uh...
you know bear out our understanding of the need for that balance uh... one of
the things that we announced on the tour
was a new initiative called let's move schools
anything
an issue did that's designed to put physical activity back into the school
day on a daily basis
and we'll talk more about that over the course of our hangout but
uh... this is one of the things that we're really trying to focus on with
let's move this not just nutrition not just diet but also that other lady of
the sins of the school which is giving our kids moving
our kids need sixty minutes of activity every single day
and the kids today are nowhere near coming close to that number
most of our kids are spending an average of seven and a half hours a day in front
of some kind of screen
on and again we use their belts have to figure out how to strike that balance in
we have to do it in our schools because that's where
our kids are spending most of their day
he knew also had kids in school combining away and
i do i have two daughters one who got to private school
where recesses a priority and so is your back and even get a chance to nap during
the day tuesday can get re-energize
where is my number dot it goes to a public school
where recess
isn't necessary
out priority
and she's lucky because there's some urban areas
where at the space outside just doesn't exist
and so giving the kids out of the classroom and happens to a playground
is a bit of a challenge
what candy administrators in the schools do to get their kids moving even with
that restriction of space outside
administrator school officials called leadership
parents the community
we have to get creative in those instances in their models of schools out
there that are figuring out how to make that happen because dinning your
absolutely bright
there are so many communities where it's just not safe
for kids to play outside uh... n obviously the safety of our kids is our
first priority
daily activity is just as critical as their overall safety
some schools have done things slip out like uh... having what they call these
brain buster moments where they just stand up in their classrooms
and they went through routine that gets their hearts pumping and it's fun and
they had music week
actually participated in one of these little brain buster of into the school
in clinton mississippi last week as part of the poor
the p teacher had had bright doing like at the cats stand up right in their
chairs
and went to a fifteen minute routine that included
uh... a moment a palm that when when he told the students to go into nama stay
they all got quiet
settled down they let their hearts break rates come down and they get that all of
the span of fifteen minutes
just standing right at the air but shares at that during the lunch hour
so the point is is that we have to get creative in their schools all across
this country that are figuring out ways regardless of up its resources or space
uh...
they're finding ways to to get kids moving in a fun creative way
uh... again let's move active schools is uh... uh... let's most schools lets move
active schools is our new initiative that's trying to get
everyone to become a champion for getting physical fitness back in the
schools on the night courage people to go to our website
lets move schools to find out how they can make their school
become one of our active schools
we're going to get the whole entire public school system moving in this
country
at several
i love that as a mom
tell win my kids do that's cool
uh... and imports and live in a good neighbor that you don't have to worry
about my children safety
but there are plenty of other places where it is a concern from
notwithstanding bright in your own hometown just and want their soco
uh... really promising student had gained content
was killed
doing something that kids all across the land should be able to do which is just
so it's a park after school with her friends
you know when we were a little we got redoubled agin hopscotch in scallions
and jack
and i just
feel like they are a lot of communities here in america where that's not
possible for kids like a mother
doesn't comparable which have had to do them
and just because it's not see
how do those moms help their children
go outside get back press a reading all those wonderful games that kids should
be able to play in although one if i had to do that they should be a big deal
when is that specter dangerous their uh... absolutely that well that's where
we as a community have to come together
for kids uh... near schools are important place to get our kids activity
in because that's where they're spending most of their day
but when i was growing up uh... are our church was that place com
you know we did activities in the basement of our church and it seemed
like the biggest basement on earth
but looking back it was a it was a pretty small space and we would do plays
in workshops and learn the flu the phone-in
yes to the church was uh... a safe haven for us to growing up and we have
churches all throughout communities that are acd in desperate need of safe havens
for kids uh... and they could be
safe havens for kids for physical activity as well
so again we is the community the adult surrounding these kids we gotta get
creative
and i would encourage parents that if they also find themselves in a situation
where they can't get outside
and let's figure out what we can do indoors
because it doesn't take the great outdoors to beat
moving everyday you know one of the things that i do with my kids i turn on
the radio and we will dance and work up a sweat
forget thirty forty minutes they laugh at me they have a good time but at the
same time were moving
so we want to give them parents those kinda tips that you know india been
reached every parent where they are
because every circumstance is different but we have to be creative and we have
to understand
that daily movement isn't an option even
in in the areas that
are are not as safe as it is uh...
we'd like them to be is just not an option
we're speaking about children inside the classroom let's go inside the classroom
right now and uh... brewer classroom and their children there
helices out online easter candy
it's not constantly dean
you certainly can move into a political south anita's uni students
first of all hello dot all of you guys can look at the meeting
yes it's great
delights you've got a healthy lunch there too but
some ideas for getting moving at first of all
and getting outside getting moving is about playing right that's all you want
to do and what of great way to get active than to go outside on a snowy day
and roll around in the selling
uh... roll down some hills in
p-labeled i have a snowball fight
all of that is activity guides you don't have to be in a organized sport you just
want to get outside and run
and retired can laugh and following the cell
uh... but they're also a whole range of great uh... winter sports if if the week
that athletes there's hockey at ice skating i know my family we
electricity we don't get the ski often because he got to go somewhere to ski
but if you live in community where you have these activities there
specially now it's third-graders take up a sport learned the state try to become
the best skaters skier hockey player
that you can be so that you can be ac
active all year round that's what i tell my girl that's one of the reasons why we
see because i want to have a sport
that they can do outside when it gets cold but there are many many ways to get
involved in in cold days
right
you guys have a newspaper winter sports that you'd like to do
just shout it out
c smoke snowboarding elo basketball
say your program you know i can you look like they're move into an area where it
looks like you guys and creepy hacker healthy kids
there's such a well-behaved and classroom by never seen children in with
the ability to say cell elsewhere is that a lot of air time the relation
between manage that's gonna brad now for an out his question brad has a question
for you mrs obama
is ms obama on the google plus we have regular hangouts for their fitness and
nutrition to me
and when you members come on the community like two dash them a few
questions about their fitness nutrition
so minister of couple of those questions with you first
what is your impreza obama's favorite workout or post workout snack
and also do you ever workout together as a family
great questions workout snacks we do a lot of protein shakes um... it because
you know quick energy you digest them they absorbed in the body really quickly
give you good energy before
war and after the workout
uh... but if we have time for food food com
fruits are great not and apple we have apples all over the white house in every
part of the white house including our residents of the apple is like our go to
snack it's like the powerful
uh... then love who must with uh... fresh vegetables whenever i can get them
uh... you know so we're just like everybody else i mean anything that's or
fruit or vegetable that gives us the energy that we need before after work
out really does
uh... dot it does the body could and week actually do workout at brock and i
we work out every morning together
uh... sometimes i get up to the g_m_ a little bit before him but we usually in
there
at some point together and we work at every single day
the girls are now old enough for their involved in their own activities um...
bay
ask at bol dance tennis track so they're busy after school
almost every day and almost every day during the weekend uh... and we tried it
donated sports events whenever possible by the president was an assistant coach
of sage's basketball team the pipers
um...
so we are very involved in our kids' lives um... physically because it just
makes it more fun when the whole family can share
in these things together
miss nobama let's go back to brewer elementary and know that you had
mentioned that nafta healthy lunch that you did see now before you let's uh...
let's touch on that with the kids back in for a man jury
good morning mrs obama
good morning it's good to see you guys again what do you have there
it's an honor to be you know how he is going to show you what's on the menu
today
helen's built on
if you think any kiki phoenix and but they can
one-page statement for milk
needs indeed
our question for you is what can we do to help the children she used
eat everything that's doubles and not brother now
are that's a very fair question you know
one of the things that i like to do with my kids in kids that that i need you to
give them the power of the information
because here's the thing that is the fruits and vegetables are probably one
of the most important parts of your lunch
because they give you the energy that you need i mean
food lunch time isn't just appl it's not a punishment
it's if actually
if that's what you need to keep your body moving
and the vegetables in the fruits fill you up and give you the energy that you
need to think and do well in your exams and for any of you kids that love sports
you need those vegetables and and and fruits to give me the energy to be able
to get to your game or finance recess to do the fun things that you need to do
so i would just ask students
to give every at every meal
take abide or to of your fruits endure vegetables
start their because the ad the more you do it the more you'll get used to it and
you like the you'll you'll begin to like the flavors of them because it takes a
long time
if you don't need a lot of fruits and vegetables you you selected sugary taste
that you get in the other foods
i want every kid to commit
tonight growing anything out first of all we don't want if there aren't any
food because they're a lot of kids all over this country in all of the world
who don't have a watch
you know and that's what we have to remember their kids out there
that would give anything to have that wonderful lunch that you have because
they don't have a lunch at all
so we have to think about them before we throw something out
but you know the more information i think we can give our kids about why
this stuff is important instead of just telling them to eat their fruits and
vegetables
if we help them understand what it does for their bodies and how it changes
their performance in
academics have been in sports it begins to make sense
does that make sense
enough stuff
glad to hear that
are that's got alexi naxx lexie
well that look like they're really deadlines no
selloutlive out west and i can't say ten a title one school that's
usually a school in the lower income neighborhood
and our schools are trying hard with the resources that they have
to provide balanced meals for kids
but neil actions continued to include the likes of nachos with cheese size and
corn docs
so my question for you missus o'connor is
what do you think can be
done to ensure kids get healthier even help their lunches at school
well which we have to remember that
the new uh... nutrition standards and wants lunches just went into effect and
many schools are still making the transition and it's gonna take some time
uh... if info out there is having challenges they should contact the
u_s_d_a_ because they've got people on staff that are ready
to work with schools because these changes and our part you know we're
going from one way of doing things to a totally different paradigm
and the u_s_d_a_ understands that schools are gonna need the help and
support on for quite some time so as a parent if you have noticed that your
school lunches are improving
we encourage you first of all to work with the school as best you can't get
back to that all possible said
yes speak out to find other parents that care about this issue to find teachers
who care about this issue
work within the school
uh... but also know that com
these nutrition standards are becoming a requirement
and that he didn't really every school will have to make these changes so you
just have to
you know keep pushing and encouraged to the school your school if you don't see
it to reach out and get help and support
but this is gonna be a community effort right now you know you can
change policies but it's gonna take some time for the culture to shift
and it may not happen overnight but it's gonna happen
which is why these goals around childhood obesity are generational goals
and we shouldn't get too upset if our kids don't automatically
you know respond the way we want to i mean the third graders that we're
talking about if they start these healthy habits now we're looking at what
kind of kids they're going to be when they're headed to college tray uh...
kids who were used to eating fruits and vegetables every day their whole added
to about food will change by the time they get the college in
they go off and start raising their families for those of the goals that
were working forcibly shouldn't get too down about you know what's not working
today because we were were always looking toward the future on this one
uh... obama
and sidetrack go ahead when regards to the guidelines and standards you were
just talking about
every year four billion dollars are spent on soft drinks on through the
government sponsored attrition programs like this now program which is the
supplemental nutrition assistance program
as is the new and
uh... food stamp
program
i their current some initiatives to purchase healthier foods
but can we see stripped your nutritional regulations with these programs
to encourage uh... raising help their families you know the focus that we've
had good let's move is really bent on giving parents the information that they
need to make the best choices for them com
that's been our approach to let's move it will continue to be our our approach
uh... i think every community you know has to determine what policies work best
for them
uh... we've got policymakers in washington that are going to be looking
at these very issues and they'll be deciding on what's the best direction
but in the meantime my goal is to make sure that the parents out there
understanding
the impact of the choices that they make
information is really the key to power
uh... the same thing issue with our kids they have to understand what food really
means to them
uh... if we want them to make those wholesale changes in their lives
that will last them a lifetime
uh... so our focus right now is making sure that people understand what's owed
is due to your body and why fruits and vegetables are so important
and give them the guidelines to help figure out what a healthy plate looks
like which is why we launched my plate so that people haven't easier way
of figuring out what is a healthy plate local act
um... and in doing that across cultures with me plot so as well hot so our focus
is going to continue to be to drive home the point we've got a better inform our
families in our communities we've gotta make the healthy choice is the easiest
choices for families
uh... and and and then look for ways to sit continues to support them along the
way
this check ab back in with ki shanti shanti
yes sure cynicism bombing when i was for her parents i've felt almost invisible
in society almost as if i was a burden
and that is the greatest country in the world we don't discriminate against
anyone welcome people from all cultures all walks of life
but you know being obese in this country you are stigmatized think about
paying an extra fair for net received airline
uh... how do we break down the cultural barriers and societal stigmas when
fighting obesity
aguila it goes back to that my answer to your first question
i think we should be talking about these issues in terms of health
and not in terms of
physical um... how kids your people look physically
uh... because people can't help how they look com nl but we we want every
american to be healthy
and i think kids can understand
uh... that question and that the uh... that that that point of health
you know what he did he give yourself the energy uni
tear rebut that life
uh... sift through to run when you wanna run
um... you know to be able to move in previously
um... we want to talk in those terms and particularly as we're dealing with our
young girls i mean i have two young daughters
we never talk about weight i'm making a point
you know i don't want my i don't want our children i don't want our children
to be weight obsessed
i want them to be focused on what i like and what do i'd have to do
in this body because everybody is different every
person's body is different
what do i have to do to be the healthiest that i can be
and that means i've got to keep my dutch triples i've got to keep my fruits again
ninety too much junk food if i can help it
and i just have to move i don't have to be a jock
i don't have to be an olympic gold medalist i'd just have to walk a lot
more maybe ride my bike maybe get up and dance with my mom maybe walk up those
stairs instead of running
we need to buy it off these goals and focus on the health of individuals and
not focus on weight
or looks and and measuring people's worth
in in that way it doesn't help us as a society
and it definitely doesn't help the individuals who wish traveling with this
issue
so bomb i know and up and went fast a couple of personal questions i hope
that's ok you're at a taking fragment as the first question
yes i read that she's not playing the piano so much as a young lady did i
you had to be told to stop practicing
uh... so i want to know do you still play
you know i will gavel every now and then but i'd again listen to my mother and i
stopped practicing which is what i try to tell kids don't stop practicing i
love the piano but i don't get to play it that much it's one of my hopes
that you know whenever i'd settled down and i'd stop being first lady and i have
a little more time on my hands that maybe one day
out take lessons again because i certainly love music
so thanks for asking
how tightly alexi
well my question is
as not normal as light as the in the white house at the federal cuts let c l_
and the president did it create some sense of normalcy four
your family and just in your home life
we we tried it continue the routines in the habits and traditions that we have
before we were here
uh... yes something as simple as making sure we sit down for dinner together
every night i talk about this all the time to meet it was actually something
that we didn't didn't have the time to do before coming here
but because both the president i
basically live above the stories he says oftentimes
he can structure his schedule so that were all here at the same time
and their family meal but turns out to be the most important time update for
all of us
and i'm not interested and that's something that we encourage families to
try to do more of its tough
in this modern day fast paced walk world but when we talk about our kids' health
an obesity
of studies do show that increase family dinners
do you have an effect
because that's the time you know what your kids your eating you know and you
can talk about it and and non-judgmental way
on you can talk about the painting the need a little more slowly because you're
not just in toppling down your food in front of the television
you're sharing your sort of letting go of all that emotion from the day
uh... so that makes us feel normal because we walk up you know you walk
into the doors of the residence and it's just home it's no longer the white house
and that's important for us and it's important for every family in america
quiche and you have a question for the first lady
shira cynicism bomb i saw you present the award for out for best picture of
this year at the oscars king tells what that was like
it was absolutely nerve-wracking
because it was alive and nobody knew we were doing it although we were right
here in the white house and we were already dressed for dinner with the
governors
i was a little bit more nervous that i thought i'd be i thought i'd drop
envelope i thought i'd get the name wrong and i just you know it's just that
uh... and have been very awesome moment for a anyone who grew up like most
americans do watching movies watching the pastors and
here i am presenting the award for best picture it was pretty
as a pretty intimidating by i got through it
fifty
they need that idea
okay so i know that lets move is about families and how to get your kids actin
but we have a very important
weekend special member of our family teaches that you do
howard dot teddy and he's is somewhere around here thirty
youth snapping like the lazy dog obedience got hurt
wondering how you go about getting while involved in your family you can move
being and and outdoor time
he said he doesn't because in the fact the c_ dot and happened
well than barack david bowie not did area
active he always students and party actually get out every day and the girls
have to walk on which is part of the acted and that's part of their ritual
they have to go outside we usually have to say and don't come right back
stay outside give them a good block throw the ball run with them
as it gets warmer and it starts to get lighter outside we all can i go out and
do that walk together
so we can make sure that though is running and you know so
again dogs are not dot net no different you wanna make sure that they're leading
a balanced diet in that they're not an active dog make sure that they are that
their food is reflective of
um... inactive dog and then get out there for that ball and get them running
so it we've got to worry about every member of our family me gap anything
awake again
worked with a rebel clean
period for the treat
favorite history that if there
it's very hard
greatly if the black book up from the that will not make that project
okay
nobama let's go to our last question are red brewer elementary school
and i'm still down
and favorite games movies music news that they are here
so
when is your favorite games from
well it's obviously the dead
when you guys go daddy
but what is the roof is a good one yet there we go we've got the brewers things
billable betty teachers out of bed
our participants if you can't count calif everybody bill about the lessons
that we are not yet friend and i would have been all over the land where greta
i don't think brad betting at the amount of nl caa card that it
it's not like like a comment not offended that you have plans that bridge
elaine has a heart attack
however you are is the conversation about working together to raise
healthier families will continue online a forest use hash tag healthy living on
google plastic share your thoughts and ideas
uh... thanks to everyone angered by and hope to see you all again soon
