What is the greatness of Type R?
A mass produced car, with mass produced engine and mass produced chassis, receiving
special refinements right from the beginning is when it begins its Type R reincarnation.
You may know the famous port buffing advertised in the catalog,
where the mechanic is performing the buffing/porting procedure.
In fact he's doing even better job than advertised. The porting goes very deep into the port.
"It's amazing how Honda is serious about what they do" is what's been known for some time now.
People are genuinely very exited and enthusiastic about them making true high spec cars intently.
The image of the car was more important than whether or not its sale would make profit.
I personally was very happy about that fact.
The older DC2 Integra version, actually it's still about to
become the older version, and the old version EK9 Civic.
If we just take a look at the engine as an example, the B series
VTEC engine has been in production since EF '89 up to '01.
The engine as a whole has seen many variations and has been
more and more refined over the last 15 years.
On the other hand, the new Inte R and Civic engine is a the new type, the K series.
This engine is based on F series engine from
S2000, which marked the Honda's fifty anniversary.
In that sense, the new Integra R and Civic R, the new engine series incorporates
all from the B series that has been made over the last fifteen years
up to S2000 F series what's known for great change in terms of engine structure.
The new K series mass produced engine is based on the predecessors.
The greatest feature of the engine is sandwiching of the crank between the block and brace.
Without subjecting the oil pan to any stress, achieved by sandwiching
the crank shaft at the top and bottom of the block. Such racing engine has
become a marketed engine. And this is the greatest highlight without a doubt.
In order to achieve high rev high power engine with high longevity you
have to necessarily deal with conflicting dual nature of these requests.
The oil return, blow-by processing and antipollution solutions
are becoming more difficult to deal with.
F and K series engine block brace type, its structure as it can be seen
allows for very high bonding strength between the crank and the block.
This also quiets down the engine sound level.
So with that the amount of blow by, oil return included,
sound level as well as the friction losses are decreased.
The B series engine is known to be more wild and slightly more uncultivated, whereas
the new K and F series engine, while still having very high power output, also have
lower friction losses and fuel consumption, sound level emissions. In a very broad
sense they achieved even higher balance between high rev power output and longevity.
The following is my personal opinion. The matter of whether or not the new Integra R is better
than its predecessor, or faster with higher engine displacement is not important at all.
The old Inte R and Civic R will remain as famous cars in history.
Will we be able to say the same thing about the new one is the right question to ask.
When driving the Inte R with over 50,000km (talks about track racing probably),
the engine can be felt a bit tired and the owner usually wants to tune it up.
It's not the tuning what I'd recommend, but overhauling the car to its new
condition is the right way of thinking. To enjoy the good car as long as possible.
The point of tuning is relatively easy.
When driving the car daily, is the drive good and smooth, are the
clutch, steering and brake systems operating smoothly? If you base
your observations of the car on these two points I reckon It should
be relatively easy to bring the car back to good working order.
