The roots of drum and bass are clearly found
in the late 80s, early 90s rave hardcore period.
The tempo was still a lot slower then,
so like around 130, 140 BPM speeds,
about what the current dubstep speed.
In any case, we have to mention Grooverider and Fabio
who were instrumental in forming the whole genre.
In the same way, Goldie and early MetalHedz
had the same huge significance.
The representative of atmospheric sounds
were LTJBukem and Good Looking.
Really, the basis of the style is the Amen break.
The most used drum loop in music history.
it's everywhere in electronic music
and every style.
In hip-hop, in breakbeat, in dub,
they all took from the Winstons Amen, Brother track.
Even if you speed it up, slow it down, you recognize it.
Want me to show you some of these breaks?
A lot of different styles were created, for example,
from the 80s soul-funk music and by the mid-90s,
split into various directions of drum and bass.
One of those is called 'atmospheric dnb'.
The first thing the comes to mind in connection to Good Looking
is that all of the music is 'straight'.
So it's practically a continuous wave of music,
and at the same time, it's constant
since the tempo doesn't really change.
I listened to the fourth part
of LTJBukem's progression sessions series
and I realized that if I take off the drum
then we'd get a totally dense, even ambient session
So drum and bass can be a lot more musical,
more deeply meaningful style, as atmospheric dnb,
which perfectly melds with all kinds of instrumental music,
with the most styles possible.
I found those elements in it,
which I was previously looking for in music.
There should be instruments, a good vocal
and Makoto as well as Conrad,
I think they really work in this way.
An academic example, I'd mention Golden Girl track.
I feel like it's all starting to get stronger again
and I don't think it's just in Hungary,
I mean, throughout the whole world.
Anybody who wants to get a little bit away
from the usual 4/4 rhythm instead,
but wouldn't turn to hip-hop or dubstep,
they should totally look into drum and bass.
The Good Looking sound is the sound
that your grandparents wouldn't turn off
if they accidentally dialed the radio to it.
Because the music is so close to people,
there's such an energy in it,
because of the bass or the vocal,
which I think will make this music last forever.
Perhaps, I could quote the comparison Chris.SU said:
"it's the kind of music that doesn't slap you in the face,
but really embraces you from behind."
