Hello, I'm Kevin Smith. Self-advocate Coordinator and today's guest
is Donald Carson talking about spreading the word about People First in your area.
Donald, how long have you been in People First and what have you done to spread the message
of People First I've been involved for 6 six years. Talked
with Huntington by Skype and off of the phone. And by teleconferences and video conferences,
by word of mouth, I talk with other friends and try and get them involved in what we're
doing to see if they are interested to see if they are interested in being leaders and
become more involved in People First. We ask them what they want to do and talk
to more people. What if they want to be involved and don't
have transportation? Well if they live in an area and can't get
out to be at a center or out to the bigger cities, then you should be able to talk to
your local center or be on the computer and connect through Skype.
What suggestions do you have for people spreading the word about self advocacy?
They can either do it by talking to friends on the street, call 'em up, e-mail them or
mail them. Or do whatever you can to get people involved.
What has People First done for you that makes you want to spread the message?
It teaches you how to be a leader, that way you can get the message across like to help
get bills passed. Any final thoughts about spreading the message
of People First? Don't be afraid to get out there and get involved.
Work with others, don't be afraid to use your voice.
