Announcer: "Let's Roll... And the cheese wheel is coming down the hill... It's all on the
line right now... The men are coming down fast. Oh my God, there's a kareen of tumbles,
it's like they're all falling down all at the same time... Oh, and it is a photo finish,
indeed. They meant business... I think we have our victor..."
You beat everyone down and you managed to stay on your feet. Congratulation, Guy. Is
this you first time competing in the competition?
It is.
Well done, Guy. Guy from Vancouver. Let's here it for him one more time... [crowd cheering:
woohoo!]
Hey folks. I'm the host here at the Cheese Rolling Festival here in Canada. The largest
Cheese Rolling Festival in the world. Up at the top of the hill, we've got racers, they
chase after the cheese. They don't actually have to catch the cheese, they just run right
after it, as fast as they can. It's about getting down to the bottle of the hill faster
than anyone else, however you can do that... tumbling, falling, flying if you manage it.
No one in the history of cheese rolling has ever caught the cheese.
You might not know this but cheese rolling is a very old tradition that started over
in England about 200 years ago. Dairy Farmers of Canada wanted to bring this wonderful tradition
to Canada and it seemed absolutely fitting to do it at Whistler at the same time as the
Crankworx Festival, one of the largest bike festivals in the world. When we started four
years ago, we had about 5000 people. Three years later, we attracted just over 10,000.
Today, for the Fourth Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival, we really hope to have at least
12,000 if not more...
"We're here in Whistler, Vancouver....Woooo! Ready for the Cheese Rolling event. Yeah!
We love cheese."
We're the Chilliwack Crusaders. We're volunteering as the hurt prevention program at the Cheese
Rolling competition. We are here to prevent people from getting whole wheels of cheese
smashed into their faces and the rest of the people from hitting the large hay bails behind
you. And we come highly recommended. We've done this all around the world. And it's probably
one of the greatest things ever invented.
"How do you prepare for this?"
We get some cheese, and we wrap it in cheese and we eat that cheese. We're rugby players,
so we're quite in shape for most of the season. So, we don't have to prepare. We're always
prepared. They keep us in a little box and then pull us out when they need us.
Announcer: "Men's yellows to the bottom player's tent"
We're going down. We're going downhill.
We actually had a crowd of 12,000 people that came to visit us today. It was amazing.
I like cheeseburgers.
I'd say that's a wrap.
