Watch me transform Merida's hair
from frizzy to fabulous!
Rosie's Tea Party presents...
Merida's Makeover Part 1 Hair Repair
We got this Merida doll at the thrift shop.
She didn't come with any clothes,
but she came with these super awesome boots!
It's usually the boots that are missing.
Look at these blue eyes
and cute freckles!
Her hair is a lovely pumpkin colour.
You can see some of the original curls in the back here!
There are so many pretty highlights!
Just gorgeous!
She has the same glue seepage problem
as ariel and Belle.
The hair is sticky, and waxy.
Looks like another job for Goo Gone!
She has her spa robe on now
and she's ready for some major hair repair.
This is Goo Gone spray gel, your new best friend.
It removes all sorts of gooey stuff.
This stuff has a warning label.
It could irritate your skin.
Children should get an adult to help with this step.
Spray the hair all over. Coat every strand with this stuff,
especially near the scalp.
This is done exactly the same as for Ariel and Belle.

Rub it in good and let it sit for 30 minutes.
30 minutes later
Okay, time to comb out the tangles!
Start combing from the bottom of the hair
and slowly make your way to the top.
You'll pull out less hair this way.
Even the craziest of knots can come out if you're patient.
Look how little hair came out!
Now, let's wash her hair!
Dish soap gets Goo Gone out better than shampoo.
Merida's hair has been washed twice,
it's really clean now.
Comb it again to make sure there are no tangles.
I'm going to dunk her hair in hot water to straighten the original curls.
This will make it easier to re-curl her hair.
Keep the hair in the hot water for 3 minutes
and pat dry.
You'll need a bunch of little clips to help separate the hair for curling.
Merida has tight, corkscrew curls,
so you'll want to make your sections small.
I'm going to make the curls about this thick.
The only reason I didn't try to make them smaller
is because I was afraid of the curls being too tight.
and I also didn't want to have to use twice the amount of curlers.
There are 32 sections of hair.
Beautiful!
You're going to need 16 chenille stems.
Separate the top layer from the bottom layer to make curling easier.
I'm going to do a few sections with a green chenille stem
so you can see better what I'm doing.
Cut it in half and now you have two curlers!
Take a section of hair and twist it tightly
This will help her curls look more like ringlets.
Twist the hair right to the end.
Fold your chenille stem in half
and tuck the end of the hair in the fold and squeeze tight.
Wind the hair around the chenille stems snugly and close together.
This is the key to making corkscrew curls.
The tighter you twist the hair and the tighter you wrap if around the chenille stem
the curlier the hair will be.
Fold down the chenille stem to hold the curl in place.
Cut off the ends if you want to,
but make sure not to cut off the hair by accident.
I'll show you one more time.
Twist
Chenille stem
Squeeze
And roll the hair.
Got that?
Okay let's go!
There,
all done!
32 curlers in Merida's hair.
Now for the hot water dunk.
This water is almost at boiling point.
Keep all her curlers under water for 3 minutes.
Now for the ice water dunk!
Keep her curlers under for 2 minutes,
this will set the curls.
Pat dry her hair
now leave her to dry over night
I'm so excited to take out the curlers!
This is a good time to trim off the damaged ends.
Try to cut off just the frizzy bits
Here's how much hair I trimmed off,
as you can see it's not that much.
Oh my goodness!
The curls look gorgeous!
I just have to style them.
Loosen them up a bit by tugging gently on the ends
and make sure the curls are laying the way you want them to.
Spread the strands of hair at the top to cover the scalp.
To make your curls more accurate to Merida's hair in the movie,
you'll want to separate them even more until you get the desired, wild effect.
Take the thicker curls
and split them in half to get more natural looking curls like this!
It also adds more volume to the hair
If you separate the curls too much the hair will be
harder to maintain and it will start to look frizzy.
When you get the hair the way you want,
hairspray it in place.
It will keep the curls looking beautiful longer.
Hairspray leaves a shiny coating so I made this to cover her face.
All you need is a light spray.
Wow! Merida looks amazing!
I love curly hair,
especially corkscrew curls!
I'm so happy how they turned out!
Look how full her hair is.
It feels so soft
So awesome
and for the finishing touch...
Her crown!
Oh my goodness!
She looks awesome.
This is what a brand-new Merida doll looks like
with her original hair.
Which do you think looks best?
Corkscrew curls?
or, ribbon curls?
