NAVY PERSONNEL AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS DONATED AN ENDANGERED FOX TO THE SANTA BARBARA ZOO
JUNE 4TH.
THE FOX, NAMED GARTH, WAS RESCUED ON SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND, THE NAVY'S LARGEST LIVE-FIRE TRAINING
RANGE IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES.
THE NAVY HAS TAKEN PRECAUTIONS TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL HABITAT OF SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND
AND MAINTAIN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR IT'S INHABITANTS, LIKE THE CHANNEL ISLAND FOX, WHICH HAS BEEN
CLASSIFIED AS A CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES.
GARTH WAS ABANDONED BY HIS PARENTS AS A YOUNG PUP SO HE NEVER LEARNED BASIC SURVIVAL SKILLS.
SINCE HE WAS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR RELEASE BACK INTO THE WILD, GARTH'S NEW HOME WILL BE THE
CHANNEL ISLAND FOX ENCLOSURE AT THE SANTA BARBARA ZOO, WHERE HE WILL SERVE AS AN AMBASSADOR
TO HELP TEACH VISITORS ABOUT CONSERVATION.
FROM WASHINGTON, I'M PETTY OFFICER AMARA TIMBERLAKE.
