>> TODAY ON "NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES" WE ARE TALKING
ABOUT 92,000 SQUARE FEET OF HOPE, FITNESS AND HEALTH IN
BROAD CREEK KROC CTR. RECYCLE DAY IS COMING AND SEND
THEM WHERE YOU CAN RECYCLE THEM. AND SICKLE CELL ANEMIA, WHAT YOU
CAN DO RIGHT HERE ON "NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES."
\M\M\M >> WELCOME TO "NORFOLK
PERSPECTIVES" I AM BOB BATCHER. WE HAVE TWO VERY SPECIAL GUESTS
WHO COME AS ONE, RIGHT, MEREDITHS.
>> TWO FOR ONE. >> YOU TRAVEL TOGETHER ALL THE
TIME, DON'T YOU? >> YES.
>> WE MOVED TOGETHER AND TRAVEL IN SEPARATE CIRCLES BECAUSE WE
GET A LOT DONE. >> BOY HAVE YOU GOTTEN A LOT
DONE. MRS. MEREDITH, HAVE YOU HUNG
PICTURES? >> I HAVE.
I REHUNG THEM. >> WHEN DO YOU HAVE TIME?
>> I HAVE REHUNG. >> SALVATION ARMY WORLDWIDE.
NOW THE FOCAL POINT IS ON NORFOLK, WHY IS THAT?
>> THERE IS GREAT VISION. PHENOMENAL THINGS GOD HAS
ALLOWED A GREAT GIFT THROUGH JOAN AND RAY KROC.
IT WAS THEIR MONEY THAT FUNDED THE CENTERS AROUND THE UNITED
STATES. WE ARE ONE OF THE LAST ONES
BUILT AND OPEN. WE HAVE LEARNED A LOT OF LESSONS
FROM ALL THE OTHER ONES. WE TRIED TO INCORPORATE MOST OF
THOSE LESSONS INTO THIS CENTER. WE HAVE HAD GREAT SUPPORTERS IN
VICE MAYOR BERFIT AND TROY BRINKLY AND A LOT OF OTHER
FOLKS. THEY HAVE BROUGHT US VISION AND
WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN IN THIS COMMUNITY.
>> LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO PHONE RINGS, YOU WERE WHERE?
>> IN KERRVILLE, TEXAS. >> YOU COME HOME FROM WORK AND?
>> I GOT UP, SHOWERED AND READY TO GO TO WORK.
THEY CALL FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AND SAY CAPTAINS
MEREDITH, WE HAVE APPRECIATED THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE HERE IN
TEXAS WE ARE FAREWELLING YOU TO HAMPTON ROADS, VIRGINIA.
>> YOUR COMMENT WAS? >> THAT IS A LONG WAY AWAY.
>> YOU BRING EXPERTISE AS WELL AS RUNNING SALVATION ARMY, YOU
STARTED KROC CTR. >> IT IS TRANSFORMATIONAL FOR A
COMMUNITY. >> YOU GET THERE AND HAD?
>> NOTHING. THERE WAS GRASS ON THE SITE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE SAYING YOU HAVE TO PUT A LOT OF FILL.
YEAH, WE KNOW. >> NEXT THING WAS AN ARIAL PHOTO
OF SUPER STRUCTURE. OH MY GOSH, IT CAN'T BE THAT
BIG. THE PICTURES DON'T DO IT
JUSTICE, IT IS HUGE. YOU MADE A COMMENT YOU WEREN'T
HEAR JUST FOR THE KROC CTR, YOU WERE HERE FOR THE ENTIRE MISSION
OF THE SALVATION ARMY FOR NORFOLK, KROC CTR WAS JUST A
PART OF IT, STILL TRUE? >> VERY TRUE.
WE HAVE ADDED WOMEN'S DAY SERVICES IN GHENT AT 19TH STREET
SHELTER WHICH ISN'T TOO FAR AND 12-BED TRANSITIONAL MEN'S
PROGRAM ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO. WE ARE CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR
WAYS TO BETTER SERVE OUR COMMUNITY AROUND US.
KROC CTR IS JUST ONE ASPECT. >> WE HAVE A CHILDREN'S DAY CAMP
THAT HAPPENED THIS SUMMER. >> FIRST TIME, DAY CAMP.
>> AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE. >> AFTER SCHOOL OPENS IN A WEEK.
>> THAT IS VERY SIGNIFICANT. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT LIFE LONG
LEARNING THROUGH NORFOLK, PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
THESE ARE THE PROGRAMS I HAVE GOTTEN USED TO WITH THE
SALVATION ARMY, I SAW YOU ON THAT OTHER CHANNEL, CHANNEL 13.
YOU HAVE BEEN DOING HUMAN SERVICES.
>> SALVATION ARMY LOOKS AND ACTS DIFFERENTLY IN EVERY COMMUNITY.
IN THIS COMMUNITY, WE TRY TO BE THE GLUE THAT MAKES EVERYTHING
WORK FOR PEOPLE IN PARTICULARLY FAMILIES IN NEEDS.
>> I WANT TO GO BACK FIVE, SIX YEARS AGO, VICE MAYOR, I KNOW WE
ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO CALL IT KROC CTR.
>> SALVATION ARMY RAY AND JOAN KROC CTR.
HE HAS THIS VISION IT WASN'T EASY COMING HERE, WAS IT?
>> NO. IT WASN'T EASY ANYWHERE IN
PLACES LIKE LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY AND CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
INITIALLY SELECTED AND HAD TO BOW OUT OF THE PROCESS BECAUSE
THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS.
ONE IS RAISING THE FUNDS NECESSARY TO BUILD THE ENDOWMENT
A WAY WE WERE ASKED TO DO IT. >> I THOUGHT IT WAS CALLED KROC
BECAUSE THEY GAVE ALL THE MONEY? >> IT IS A MYTH.
IT IS AN IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW JOAN KROC GAVE A THIRD OF A
MONEY TO CONSTRUCTION AND A THIRD TO ENDOW THE CENTER AND
LOCAL COMMUNITY HAD TO PUT SKIN IN THE GAME AND RAISE A THIRD OF
THE MONEY. WE WERE FORTUNATE, WHEN WE
ARRIVED BUDGET WENT FROM 28 MILLION TO BUILD THE BUILDING.
THE TERRITORY, OUR SUPERVISION SAID WE WANT THIS PROJECT TO BE
JUST WHAT YOU THINK IT NEEDS TO BE, THE BUDGET IS NOW 40
MILLION. THEY DIDN'T MAKE US RAISE THE
ENDOWMENT ANOTHER 12 MILLION. THAT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN DOABLE.
>> A FEW WEEKS AGO I WENT TO THE BUILDING.
A LOT OF METAL STUDS, DEFINITELY TOP CLASS.
>> IT IS, THE ARMY HAS TAKEN THE PERSPECTIVE AS JOAN DID IN HER
WILL, TO BUILD CENTERS, 50-YEAR CENTERS.
THIS CENTER IS GOING TO BE IN THIS COMMUNITY A LONG TIME.
>> I WAS AFRAID YOU WOULD SHOW UP IN SWEATS.
[LAUGHTER]. IT IS GOING TO HAVE A FITNESS
CENTER, STATE-OF-THE-ART? >> STATE-OF-THE-ART.
>> THE MACHINES WILL DO ALL THE WORK?
>> I WISH THAT WERE THE CASE. I WENT THIS MORNING TO THE YMCA
AND HAD MY WORKOUT. THEY DON'T DO THE WORKOUT FOR
YOU. >> I WAS LOOKING FOR A POOL, YOU
DON'T HAVE JUST A POOL COMING TO THIS PLACE.
YOU WANT TO DESCRIBE IT? >> IT IS A WATER PARK.
AN IN-DOOR WATER PARK. >> WE HAD OUR NIECES AND NEPHEWS
THEY SAID AUNT CHRISTY HAS A POOL UNCLE BRETT HAS A WATER
PARK. [LAUGHTER].
>> A LOT IS OVER LESSONS SALVATION ARMY HAS LEARNED.
WE ARE GOING TO HAVE LAP LANES, 25-METER LAP LANES FOR THE HARD
CORE FOLKS. THAT IS AN IMPORTANT PART.
MY SON HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF THOSE.
FOR FAMILIES, WE NEED TO HAVE PLAY STRUCTURES AND FUN WATER.
WE HAVE DONE THAT. THERE IS A LAZY RIVER IN IT.
SO IN THE MORNING BEFORE THE KIDS GET TO THE CENTER.
THAT WILL BE OPEN FOR WATER WALKING CLASSES AND WALK AGAINST
THE CURRENT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS TO HELP WITH FITNESS.
>> NOT JUST FITNESS, YOU HAVE THE THEATRE STATE-OF-THE-ART.
AND A COMMUNITY ROOM. YOU ARE BUILDING THIS FOR
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT? >> THE VISION JOAN HAD WAS FOR
PEOPLE TO COME IN ON LEVEL GROUND NO MATTER WHAT THEIR
BACKGROUND WAS TO BRING A LOT OF SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS
TOGETHER SO WE COULD LEARN FROM EACH OTHER.
ONLY WAY IS TO HAVE COMMUNITY AND ENGAGEMENT.
>> WHEN A RESIDENT COMES IN, WILL WE BE INUNDATED WITH
SALVATION ARMY? >> I DON'T THINK SO.
>> HOW DOES THAT WORK? >> YOU ARE GOING TO SEE A
SHIELD. THE FACT IS, SALVATION ARMY IS
THE OPERATOR OF THE FACILITY. WE WANT IT TO BE A FAMILY
ORIENTED FACILITY. WHAT YOU ARE INUNDATED WITH IS
THINGS THAT APPEAL TO FAMILY AND TO BE ENJOYABLE.
WE WANT IT TO BE A PLACE WHERE YOU BRING YOUR KIDS AND GRAND
KIDS AND KNOW YOU ARE SAFE. YOU KNOW IT IS FUN AND YOU KNOW,
YOU KNOW THAT IT IS JUST AN ENJOYABLE PLACE TO COME.
GOOD MEMORIES. DISNEY WORLD HAS DONE A
PHENOMENAL JOB OVER 50 YEARS TEACHING PEOPLE THAT MAKING
MEMORIES IS IMPORTANT. THEY BUILD A WHOLE BUSINESS
MODEL AROUND IT. THESE CENTERS ARE NOT UNLIKE
THAT BECAUSE WE MAY NOT ALL BE ABLE TO GO TO DISNEY WORLD.
FACT IS YOU CAN MAKE GREAT MEMORIES WITH YOUR FAMILY AT
HOME. >> YOU HAVE AN AWESOME VISION,
THINGS A LOT OF PEOPLE SAID WOULDN'T BE DONE.
THE BIG QUESTION IS: IS IT ON TIME?
>> IT IS ON TIME, MARCH 18TH. WE'LL RECEIVE THE KEYS AND TRUST
WE HAVE A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY OPEN APRIL 25, 2014.
>> YOU ARE ON CAMERA. >> I KNOW, IT WILL COME BACK TO
ME WE HAVE DONE OUR HOMEWORK IT WILL BE READY APRIL 25TH.
>> YOU ARE BRINGING IT ALIVE AS WE SPEAK.
ONE WHOLE SECTION WE PUT UP ALL THE DRY WALL.
NOW THEY ARE BIG THINGS HAPPENING.
>> WHAT DIDN'T I ASK YOU YOU REALLY WISHED I HAD?
>> YOU HAVE PRETTY MUCH COVERED IT, BOB.
WE WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW IT IS AN ASSET FOR HAMPTON ROADS.
EVERYBODY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO GREAT WOLF LODGE, BUT YOU CAN
BRING YOUR FAMILY AND BE PART OF IT EVERYDAY.
>> I AM SO GLAD YOU ARE HERE. YOU ARE BRINGING KROC CTR TO OUR
REGION. WHEN WE COME BACK, RECYCLING, WE
WANT IT, BELIEVE
IT OR NOT, STAY TUNED.
>> WELCOME BACK TO "NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES," DURING PRETAPE I
DISCOVERED I AM CLEANING HOUSE, YOU ARE GOING TO FIND OUT WHY.
DANIELLE CRONIN FROM GOODWILL, HOW ARE YOU?
>> GREAT. >> AND KRISTI RINES.
QUWANIA JEFFERSON, BEAUTIFUL, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
>> I AM DOING GREAT. >> IT HAS BEEN SO COOL OVER THE
LAST YEAR. >> ABOUT A YEAR.
>> THIS PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CITY OF NORFOLK AND TFC AND GOODWILL
HAS BROUGHT SENSE TO GET RID OF YOUR STUFF.
QUWANIA JEFFERSON, WHAT ARE YOU DOING SEPTEMBER 7TH.
>> WE ARE COMING TOGETHER TO OFFER THE SUSTAINABLE TRILOGY.
>> SAY THAT AGAIN, SUSTAINABLE TRILOGY?
>> YES. IT IS A PARTNERSHIP.
WE MAKE IT MAKE SENSE FOR RESIDENTS.
THIS EVENT IS ALL -- PEOPLE CAN BRING RECYCLABLES FROM HOME,
UNWANTED CLOTHES, SHOES, HOUSE HOLD ITEMS, COMPUTERS,
TELEVISION SETS, SO MANY THINGS THEY CAN BRING TO THIS EVENT
BECAUSE OF THIS PARTNERSHIP WE ARE ABLE TO OFFER SUCH AN EVENT.
I HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH THE JOURNEY OF RECYCLING, I GET
CONFUSED. I GO IN CIRCLES.
THEN I LOOK UP STAIRS AND I HAVE COLLECTED THREE TELEVISIONS UP
IN MY ATTIC TOO BIG AND GIANT BLOCKS.
YOU'LL TAKE THOSE? >> YOU CANNOT PUT THAT IN THE
RECYCLING CENTER, CORRECT. AT THESE TYPES OF EVENTS,
RECYCLING NORFOLK DAY, YOU CAN BRING THOSE THREE TV'S WITH THE
VCR CASSETTES. >> I HAVE LOST 35 POUNDS IN MY
FITNESS PROGRAM. >> CONGRATULATIONS.
>> I HAVE SEVERAL SUITS IN THE CLOSET I REFUSE TO EVER WEAR
AGAIN. >> YOU CANNOT PUT THOSE IN YOUR
CURB? >> I CAN GIVE THEM TO YOU?
>> THERE IS THE TRILOGY? >> YES.
>> WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THEM? >> WELL, THANKS TO GOODWILL'S
MOTTO AND WHAT WE LIKE TO RAISE AWARENESS.
WHEN YOU THINK RECYCLE, YOU SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT
REPURPOSING AND REUSING ITEMS, A LIFE EXTENSION TO ITEMS, VERY
TRENDY, NOW AS WE ARE ALL GETTING TO KNOW.
SO GOODWILL IS ABLE TO ACCEPT DONATIONS AND ACCEPT THEM.
GOODWILL LOCATIONS AND THAT GENERATES MONEY FOR CAREER
DEVELOPMENT SERVICE PROGRAMS FOR INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE BARRIERS
TO EMPLOYMENT, TRANSITIONING VETERAN, SOMEONE WITH PHYSICAL
DISABILITY, A MOM RETURNING TO THE WORK FORCE AND THE LATEST
TECHNIQUES OF BUILDING A RESUME, NETWORKING AND SOCIAL MEDIA.
>> IT PUTS A WHOLE NEW LENS ON RECYCLING.
WHEN IT COMES THROUGH YOUR PLACE, WHERE DOES IT GO?
>> TFC COLLECTS RECYCLABLES, WE'LL HAVE A CONTAINER ON SITE
SO PEOPLE IN APARTMENT COMPLEXES, TOWN HOMES DON'T HAVE
THE ABILITY TO USE THE CURB SIDE CART, THEY CAN BRING IT TO OUR
SITE. IT IS REPURPOSED, RECYCLED INTO
SOMETHING NEW. >> THOSE PLASTIC BOTTLES GO TO
THE LANDFILL AND NEVER DISAPPEAR?
>> THAT'S RIGHT. YOU CAN RECYCLE THAT WITH THE
CAPS ON. >> WITH THE -- HOW DID YOU KNOW
I AM GOING TO ASK THAT? [LAUGHTER] I NOW HAVE A
RECYCLING CAN AND HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO THROW THE CAP IN THE
TRASH CAN. >> YOU CAN LEAVE THE CAP ON.
YOU DON'T NEED TO SMASH IT, LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS, EMPTY OF
FLUIDS. [LAUGHTER] WE DO HAVE OBSTACLE
SORTERS THAT RECOGNIZE THE SHAPE OF THE BOTTLE.
BEING IN THE SHAPE OF THE BOTTLE IS IMPORTANT.
I APPRECIATE YOUR DOING THAT. >> THE REASON I TAKE THE CAP OFF
BECAUSE I CAN'T SMASH IT WITH IT ON.
>> IT IS A STRESS RELIEVER. WHAT KIND OF ELECTRONICS ARE YOU
TAKING? >> WE'LL ACCEPT ANYTHING THAT
TOOK ELECTRICITY TO OPERATE IT. >> IF YOU PLUG IT IN, YOU CAN
BRING IT? DOESN'T HAVE TO NECESSARILY
WORK? >> NO.
>> WHAT HAPPENS WITH THAT STUFF? >> GOODWILL HAS A STAFF OF
VOLUNTEERS ON SITE. >> WE HAVE THE RECONNECT
PROGRAM. GOODWILL HAS A PARTNERSHIP WITH
DELL COMPUTERS. WE HAVE HAD THAT PROGRAM LOCALLY
SINCE 2008. THAT ALLOWS US TO OFFER
RESIDENTS THROUGHOUT HAMPTON ROADS, YOU DON'T HAVE TO JUST BE
A NORFOLK RESIDENT TO DONATE COMPUTERS, PERIPHERALS, CELL
PHONES, ANYTHING THAT STORES DATA.
WE TAKE THAT AND WE WILL EITHER RECYCLE OR RESTORE IT TO
ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER SETTING OR RESELL TO GENERATE IT.
>> COOL, SEPTEMBER 7TH. ODU PARKING LOT?
>> 5200 HAMPTON BOULEVARD. >> BY THE WHRO STUDIOS?
PLENTY OF PLACES TO PULL UP. >> THAT IS ON A SATURDAY,
SEPTEMBER 7TH. >> 10:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. >> COOL.
I AM GOING TO CLEAN HOUSE. OUGHT TO GET GOING.
THANKS A LOT. WHEN WE COME BACK WE ARE TALKING
ABOUT SICKLE CELL ANEMIA AND A WALK YOU CAN PARTICIPATE IN,
STAY TUNED. \M\M\M
>> WELCOME BACK TO "NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES."
WE HAVE THREE VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE ON THE SOFA, JUDY
ANDERSON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SICKLE CELL ANEMIA ASSOCIATION,
HOW ARE YOU? >> JUST FINE, THANK YOU.
>> WE HAVE A SPECIAL EVENT COMING UP, BEFORE THAT WHAT IS
SICKLE CELL ANEMIA? >> SICKLE CELL ANEMIA IS A
GENETIC TO HAVE ABNORMAL GENE PASSED ON FROM PARENTS TO THE
CHILD. OFFSPRING BORN WITH THE DISEASE.
THEY WILL HAVE IT ALL OF THEIR LIVES.
>> THREE DIFFERENT TYPE? >> THREE DIFFERENT MAJOR TYPES
IN HAMPTON ROADS AREA, OVER 600 VARIATIONS.
>> WHOA. >> WE KNOW ABOUT HAMPTON ROADS
AREA, SICKLE CELL ANEMIA, SICKLE C DISEASE AND SICKLE
THALASTHEMIA. >> MARIE JACKSON HORN, YOU ARE A
PARENT OF A DAUGHTER THAT HAS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA?
>> YES. I AM.
>> WHAT ARE HER SYMPTOM? >> SHE GOES THROUGH PAIN CRISES.
PAIN IN HER ARMS OR LEGS. SOMETIMES SHE HAS BACK PAIN.
BASICALLY, A LOT OF SICKLING WHICH CAUSES BLOOD TO, NOT TO
FLOW AS EASY. THERE IS A LOT OF PAIN.
>> IT IS CALLED SICKLE CELL ANEMIA FOR FAIRLY OBVIOUS
REASONS, WHY? >> BECAUSE OF THE INSTRUMENT --
DOCTORS BACK IN 1910, IDENTIFIED SHAPE OF THE CELLS LOOK LIKE A
SICKLE. KIDS AREN'T FAMILIAR WITH A
INSTRUMENT USED TO CUT TALL GLADES OF GRASS.
IT AFFECTS RED BLOOD CELLS. >> YOUR DAUGHTER IS 20 YEARS
OLD. >> YES.
>> SHE IS BORN. WHAT DID THE DOCTOR TELL YOU?
>> DOCTORS TOLD ME THEY TESTED AT BIRTH FOR SICKLE CELL ANEMIA
AND TESTED POSITIVE. SHE STAYED IN THE POSITIVE MAYBE
FIVE DAYS WITH JAUNDICE. SHE WAS KIND OF YELLOW.
SHE NEEDED A LOT OF SUN. THEY GAVE HER SOME HEAT.
AT THAT POINT, I DIDN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
I DIDN'T HAVE SYMPTOMS OR ANYTHING.
IT HAS BEEN A LEARNING EXPERIENCE, I ALWAYS TRY TO FIND
OUT ALL THE INFORMATION I NEED TO KNOW WHEN SHE GOES TO THE
DOCTOR, SHE TRIED TO KEEP HERSELF HEALTHY.
>> LISA, THAT WAS A GOOD SEGWAY. >> I WAS SIX MONTHS OLD WHEN I
WAS, MY PARENTS DISCOVERED I HAD SICKLE CELL DISEASE.
THEY WERE TOLD I SHOULDN'T LIVE PASSED AGE OF 18.
SO I AM 49. >> RUDE OF ME TO ASK, WOW.
>> I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE DOCTORS AT EVMS FOR KEEPING ME
HEALTHY. >> YOU HAD PART TO PLAY?
>> AS A YOUNG ADULT, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND TOO MUCH ABOUT MY
ILLNESS. AS I GREW OLDER AND GOT WITH THE
SICKLE CELL ORGANIZATION, I LEARNED A LOT MORE ABOUT THE
ILLNESS AND UM, I DO WHAT I AM SUPPOSED TO DO, I REST, I EAT
THE CORRECT FOODS, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, I AM NOT AS OUT THERE
AS I USED TO BE. >> NOW YOU JUST TOLD ME IN
PRETAPE YOU HAVE PASSED A MILESTONE?
>> GRADUATED IN ODU IN 1999. >> HOT DIGITY DOG.
YOUR DAUGHTER IS AT SCC. WHAT KIND OF SYMPTOMS DO YOU
HAVE? >> WITH ME, IT WILL START WITH
THE CHEST, REAL THROBBING PAIN IN MY CHEST AND COME UP FROM MY
TOES TO MY LEGS AND MY ARMS AND IT IS UNDESCRIBABLE.
IT IS THE WORST PAIN I HAVE EVER HAD.
I THINK RIGHT NOW, I AM USED TO IT, YOU KNOW WITH MEDICATIONS,
IT IS A LOT BETTER THAN IT USED TO BE.
>> POTENTIAL REAL THREAT IS A STROKE.
>> THAT'S RIGHT. WE STARTED BACK IN THE 80S, THEY
STARTED A STUDY, BLOOD TRANSFUSION FOR PERSONS THAT HAD
THE POTENTIAL OF STROKING SO A NUMBER OF OUR CHILDREN THOUGHT
WITH BLOOD TRANSFUSION, WE KNOW THEY HAVE TO HAVE IT EVERY FOUR
WEEKS. LISA HAS HAD THAT AS WELL.
>> ON A ROUTINE BASIS. >> NOT LATELY.
>> GOOD! >> THAT IS THE GOOD THING.
I HAVE IRON OVERLOAD. I HAVE TOO MUCH IRON.
I HAVE TOO TAKE MEDICATION TO DISPOSE OF THAT IRON.
THERE ARE ALSO OTHER PROBLEMS SEPTIC NECROSIS, BONES IN MY HIP
AREA ARE BECAUSE OF LACK OF BLOOD NEED A HIP REPLACEMENT.
>> WHICH OF COURSE THAT LEADS TO OTHER ISSUES WHICH IS A DEMAND
FOR BLOOD. BLOOD DRIVE COMING UP ON
SEPTEMBER 21ST IS IMPORTANT. I AM SITTING HERE, YOU ARE
TALKING ABOUT PAIN, I AM COMPLAINING ABOUT BEING STIFF
FROM RUNNING TODAY. YOU WANT US TO WALK, RUN ON
SEPTEMBER 14TH. >> WE CERTAINLY DO WANT PERSONS
TO COME OUT AND JOIN US IN THE RUN/WALK.
THESE FAMILIES HAVE RUN A RACE DAILY TO JOIN IN WITH FAMILIES.
OUR SUPPORT FROM THESE KINDS OF EVENTS HELP FAMILIES IN AN
ONGOING DAILY NEEDS. EVERYTHING FROM HELPING THEM TO
STAYING IN HOUSING, TO WE GAVE SCHOLARSHIP TO OUR YOUNG PERSONS
WHEN THEY ARE GOING OFF TO COLLEGE.
THAT WAS UNHEARD OF IN YEARS BEFORE.
WE WANT TO HELP THEM TO SURVIVE THE THINGS THEY ARE GOING
THROUGH ON A DAILY BASIS. >> THAT IS SO COOL, DOING WHAT
YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO, IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK, WHAT DO MOMS THINK?
>> DEFINITELY EATING HEALTHY, NOT GETTING TOO COLD, TOO HOT,
STAYING COMFORTABLE, KEEPING YOUR BODY WELL IS IMPORTANT.
MY DAUGHTER, SHE HAS DONE EVERYTHING FROM TEE BALL TO
SWIMMING TO BASKETBALL. I ENCOURAGED HER TO BE ACTIVE TO
KEEP HER BLOOD FLOWING AND THAT HELPED HER A LOT.
>> WE HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE WEB PAGE.
I WANT TO ENCOURAGE THE VIEWER TO FIND OUT MORE, GET INVOLVED
BY COMING OUT SEPTEMBER 14TH. BRING THE AWARENESS ALSO
PARTICIPATE AND BE PART OF OUR LIVES.
THANK YOU. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU MORE
IMPORTANTLY WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD 664-6510.
IT IS A WONDERFUL TIME BEING IN NORFOLK BECAUSE OF YOU, YOU, AND
YOU, THANK YOU. [CAPTIONING PROVIDED BY U.S.
CAPTIONING COMPANY]
