She gave My song? To Somebody Else?
You know how you can get struck by a song component?
A song title, or this killer melody, or just an outstanding lyric, a turn of phrase that’s
so unique and delectable it feels like butter in your mouth?
Know what that is?
That’s The Muse!
She’s flying by, like she always does, dropping ideas, inspiration, and new perspectives.
And why? Why does she do that? Because she’s trying to birth those things that she’s
whispering in your ear into the Earth, and she does it the same way she always has since
the beginning of time; through you, through us, the artists.
So what happens when we don’t listen?
Six months later, you’re on YouTube, you’re watching TV, your following a link on your
phone…….when all of a sudden, you hear your song. You hear that idea expressed in
a lyric, you hear that melody, you hear those chord progressions and you scream inside of
your head….
THAT’S MY SONG!! THAT’S MY SONG!! THAT’S MY SONG!!
Correction: it was your song. The Muse tried to give it to you, she tried to birth it through
you first, but you didn’t take it seriously. You didn’t write it down. You didn’t capture
it, and then you forgot about it. Until you heard it again….because she gave it to someone
else.
Songwriting Tip: Always Capture Your Ideas
And when I say always, I mean always. Just accept that people are going to look at you
like you’re crazy, that’s just a part of being a songwriter. But from now on, you’re
going to have your phone camera ready. You’re going to have your Notes app ready. If you’re
walking down the street, or texting, or out for a jog, it doesn’t matter. The next time
that song title, that lyric idea, that melody interrupts you, you’re going to stop what
you’re doing, and take a selfie video of you singing it, so you can develop it later.
You’re going to take the Muse’s blessing seriously, and never lose another idea, and
when you start to do that, when you start to write your ideas down, I guarantee you
that the Muse will reward you by making sure that new ideas never stop flowing.
Why aren’t you following me on Twitter? Let’s fix that!
