Hello, this is Russ from Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective. Online at slcbikecollective.org.
And I'm here on behalf of Expert Village and today I'm going to show you how to install
the cog on your new fixed-gear bike. What you're going to do is ascertain the parts
you're going to need. Sometimes they'll come with the wheel, sometimes they won't. So you
want to make sure you go to the bike shop and get the appropriate gears you need for
there. On fixed gear wheel there's actually two threads. One's a little bit larger than
the other. The larger one is the one that the cog is actually going to thread onto.
You're going to want to put a little bit of grease on there before you start. This will
reduce the friction and in the event you want to remove it later that will assist you in
doing so. You're going to go ahead and thread that cog onto there. It should go on very
easily. If it?s turning difficult, that means that you've probably got it on there not straight,
you're going to want to remove it and do it over again. After you've gotten tighten down
there, there's two ways you can do it. If you have a chain whip at home, you're going
to want to use that. If not, you can actually tighten it later while it?s on the bike as
you pedal. You're going to want to get it on there and take the chain whip and go ahead
and just apply a pretty good amount of force, make sure that?s on there nice and tight.
The next part you're going to need is after there is a thin washer that interfaces between
the gear and the lock ring that goes on there. So you're going to want to drop that into
place and then go ahead and take your lock ring, thread it on there. This one's going
to go in the opposite direction of the previous one. This one's a reverse thread which is
often common in bicycle world. And the next thing you're going to need is some kind of
hook wrench to go into these slots right here and you're going to want to go ahead and tighten
that one down in the opposite direction. This one keeps the wheel from coming off when you're
pedaling in the backwards position. That's how you do it.
