Hey head squeezers, I hope you're well. First up, a huge thank you from all of us at Head
Squeeze HQ for all the brilliant questions that you've been sending in and also all of
our new subscribers -- welcome! Right, let's get stuck in.
This one is from Benjamin Jones, a really great one from YouTube who asks, why are men
able to grow facial hair yet women are not. Right for this lets go right back to the beginning.
Lets start when we are kids, awww. We are actually covered all over in soft light body
hair known as vellus hair. Now jump to puberty, alright calm down. Puberty
is where everything changes doesn't it. Now hormones called androgens are present
in both sexes in male and female. What they do is they cause that hair during
puberty to get coarser thicker and to darken especially in our armpits and our, emm, our
bits, bring the camera up, I know what you're doing there.
Now chaps have more of these androgens than the ladies, that leaves us to get a bit of
sprouting on our chest, maybe on our chest, maybe on our upper lip, or maybe a full blown
beard. As a little aside if you want to see me with
a full face of facial fur then click on this video here, which will take you to an earlier
Q&A where I spent a month in the Himalaya's. And I got a good full beard.
Now the question is why is it that blokes can get a good old beard on where as women
cant. And I must say I'm ignoring the beard ladies of the Victorian circuses. Aren't I
madam? Sir. Madam. Anyho, right. For this we need to look back
In to our prehistory and welcome Mr Charles Darwin who himself has a pretty impressive
lustrous beard. We want to look at his theory of *** selection.
Now think of a lion with a lustrous mane or maybe a peacock with a fantastic big colourful
tail. Now Darwin says that they've evolved to look
like that to attract the opposite sex to attract the female of the species. And also for them
to look more bigger and powerful in front of a rival male. So maybe in our evolution
before the invention of the razor, it was decided that a man with a bit of facial fuzz
looked much better to a woman and a woman who had less hair looked better to a man so
maybe that's come out of our evolution. But in exchange for a subscribe, for those
of you watching this who haven't yet subscribed, it's a fair exchange, a bonus fact?
Ok, if a man doesn't shave at all in the whole of his lifetime, he beard can grow to 30 feet
long. Impressive stuff. Right I think we'll leave
this one there. In the comments write who is your favourite bearded person. That will
be an interesting one for us all to read. Until next time happy head squeezing.
